EDGE of the OUTBACK

3 жыл бұрын

A regular weekly venture hunting predators AKA wilds dogs and foxes with Thermal. I don't often get caught unawares but I did on this hunt. The wild dogs are becoming an enormous issue in my local area. Hunting them with thermal optics at night time is probably the most efficient ground shooting method. It takes a lot of patience and just being plan stubborn some nights.

Obviously you have gotten some good use out of the .204 Ruger as a calliber years ago I had to choose between a Ruger in. 204 and .223 howa 1500 as a fox gun and I took the .223 as the ammo was cheaper and I thought ballistics would be more stable in the wind and light brush your videos are the first time I've seen a .204 used as a varmint hunter on a regular basis great video keep it up.

It's a handy cartridge for sure, I really enjoyed it. I actually sold it on last month though as I have built my 223Rem into a 6BR now. More versatile for a lot of my shooting. Nothing wrong with a 223Rem, I burned mine out, that's glitter much I used it.

In in the interest of ridding Aus of these wild dogs what are the prospects and legalities of tranquilizing (or drugging with bait) an individual dog, using a tracking device to monitor where their pack has their den and then culling the lot? While it may not be as entertaining as the individual hunt, would it not be more efficient and potentially more lucrative especially if it was Gov backed? Interested in your thoughts. Although this method not as suited to cats.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK 3 жыл бұрын
The LLS do just this on wild dogs. Assists with control, patterning etc. A lot of dogs don't have a den, they just roam a home range unfortunately. There are quite a few local government paid professional trappers / shooters locally. They are spread thin though. Baiting is also heavily done locally. All works as part of a programme. Ground shooting like I do is just a part of the mix.

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK I predict it will be a failure. Sure they might get a few ferals but they vast majority in the area will not be affected. It doesn’t seem like the authorities have thought about the eagles and hawks and peregrine falcons eating the targeted poisoned ferals.

Mate... we shoot tons of foxes on properties with "fox guard" and 1080 bait... even when it comes to trapping the dogs you will blokes get 5 or 10 dogs and MAYBE a fox here and there.. they are way too smart .. shooting discriminates baits do not. 1080 in alot of areas simply wiped out goannas more than anything else. Im sick of these retarded poison ideas .. usually the idea comes from some uni student with no real world experience in the bush. Shooting discriminates... thermal and more disciplined shooters going into national parks would be a good start.. but at the moment foxes are crawling everywhere you go. Farmers on new properties usually say "we dont get foxes around here" Then you go out with thermal and in 2 nights shoot 5 or 7 foxes and see more you couldnt get to. Foxes have a low profile and stick to low lying areas drains waterways etc to navigate which makes them predictable but highly evasive even with thermal they suprise you where they pop up.

I was going to ask why are you using .204 ruger, but then you said your on a hobby farm of 600 acers. Last place i was on in New England was 9000 acers. I would be I would still use a 7mm-08 or 6.5 creedmore. I like lights out when shooting and a lot of rounds like .223 , .243 are illegal to hunt with in Europe, it will happen in Australia one day and will start in NSW or VIC I bet.

What would the average wild dog weigh? Similar to our coyote?
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK 3 жыл бұрын
I've shot some up to 35kgs, they can get big. I just googled coyote weights and it seems 20kg tops out a male animal. Most wild dogs would probably be around 25 kgs in this area. They do vary though.

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK 35kg? That’s like a small wolf. No wonder the farmers don’t want them hanging around. Keep piling them up 👍🏻

Distance question; In WA there is the situation where a 120kg chap was shot from estimated 300m. The law enforcement agencies claim it "must be the work of a professional, ex SAS, trained sniper" You just took out a sub 20kg dog (my visual guestimate) at 260m. My question is this; how many 300m shots would you have got/hit target in your shooting career. Or. How easy/difficult are 300m shots.? What is your longest shot?

It would be super rare for that to happen. I have heard of tales but personally have not seen anything but fear for man from these animals.
