Hunting Pigs in Australia, NSW Public Land State Forest Hunt

This little hunt was in a NSW state forest near Nundle. I'd planned to do some deer and pig hunting while we had a nice night in the bush camping. Mainly I just wanted to spend some time in the forest with my 5yr old little boy and brother in law Steve from 4WD Recon Australia. We are legally permitted to hunt public land under the NSW R license system, So I wasn't passing up the chance to take the 30/06 and have a few little opportunistic hunts while the boys spent some time in camp together. While always positively optimistic about hunting in a busy state forest that has no shortage of pressure. You could imagine my excitement taking a big mountain boar right on the doorstep of camp.
Hunt those marginal skerrick's of first and last light guys, This pig was shot in timbered cover right on the fringe of dawn. I'd awoken in the dark and started scanning with the bino's straight away when light permitted. Fortunately I'm running a high quality Swarovski rifle scope with an illuminated reticle so I could positively ID and aim. Who knows where this big boy was wandering too before the sun popped up.
The journey up to the forest through Glenrock and Barry station was a drive I'd wanted to do for a long time, Steve's 4x4 rig was more than adequate for that task and the scenery was amazing.

Roo's when stalking are the Devil! A leaf drops from a Gumtree 50 yds (stuff metrics!) away and the buggers are alert to it. I have happy memories of that area in the early to mid 80's. 30/06 is a favorite too. Very versatile cartridge. Loved this vid :)

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK My Tikka is a Master continental in 25-06 and it's a peach. I had one in 17rem but sadly no longer. Also run 22hornet - 22lr - 223 and 243 I forgot to mention the sling you use. I use the same sling but none of my mates like them. Are you happy with yours. I just find them so handy. All the best mate. Frank

Awesome mate. The safari sling is great (I'm using the Moroka 30 version now, it's better). I think people either love or hate them. Probably not the best option for barrel safety with others 🙄. But they are fast to shoot from and work well with shooting sticks or a tripod.

Yeah it wasn't the toughest shot. Other than actual seeing the bugger in such low light. Needed the illuminated reticle on. And what the video misses portraying is I was looking at him in the scope for about 3min waiting for him to turn so I could get decent target ID.

Nice video mate, I was up there in Sept. Heaps of roos, saw plenty of pig sign but unfortunately didnt see any ferals. I actually camped out on that same dam hoping to catch something having a drink since there wasnt much water in that area but no dice. As you said plenty of human activity up there.

Yeah it does, I hid in the ferns on the dam wall and realised it was littered with .22 cases and there was a gas bottle with a bullet hole. Shame people choose to jeopardise how lucky we are in NSW to use SF for hunting and rec

Its a beautiful area, we spent like 6-7 days there in a few different spots. The eastern side of nundle showed a bit more sign than the west but its a bloody big area so I probably missed some good spots

Just come across your channel and subscribed straight away. I find it funny when your using large calibre bullets on little critters. I’m sorry for my fellow Europeans who brought the evasive pests in the 1800s. In the uk foxes are everywhere even in city areas. They have got such a problem where even attacks on people have occurred. We don’t have wild boars anymore they got wiped out by hunting. But wild pigs are such a problem in south of France where my parents live they are everywhere causing lots of damage to farmers. I’ve never been a cat lover so I don’t mind seeing them massacred.

feral pigs are just carrion on most shoots. In Australia they often carry disease and parasites (worms, tuberculosis, brucellosis etc). Unless you are very careful at checking these animals, it's not worth eating them.

Take the young fella for a trout fish at Sheba Dam. How are you liking that Moroka30 Stalker Sling? I put it on the "suggestion" list for Xmas and I'm hoping it was a strong enough hint. I have a safari sling but it's just lacking a bit and I'm hoping that sling solves a few issues.

I am curious. Do you find the night shooting opportunities vary across the night. I imagine some people are more awake at different times. Before dawn there would be more dew and cooler ambient temperatures. This must have some impact on thermal imaging too.

There's a huge amount of factors in play. Humidity is a big one and dew has an impact too on certain species.

No mate. Pigs aren't something you'd normally skin at all.

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Well i don't want to put you off but a Boar you have to take the skin off completely and then hang in cooler room for 3days and then you use the rib racks as spare ribs and debone the neck and the legs you can smoke in a smoker but the secret is after you dressed the Boar spak it in Vinegar water to take out the wild smell and taste

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Go for it mat bt mak sure you get a head shot so that you dont damage the ribs but enen a freezer box wil work and if you down the hog with a head shot cut the throat from side to side an let it bleed out and hang it by the hind legs and start skinning and make sure you have a drum under it for the guts to fall in and becarefull not to cut the bladder ok.And the pork belly you can roast.It seems to me that i must come and teach you guys how to live of the field and the rabbits shoot them with a .22and skin them off snd you can mak beautiful stew out of it. And a porcupine is the best with nice piece of fat on his back.(Crackling)

Just Wondering, Why the Orange Cap, when the rest of clothing is conventional camouflage.

Visible to other hunters or shooters. Excellent safety measure and animals see mostly black and white. So orange camo can look a lot like regular camo to a deer.

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK It is not bright enough Orange supposedly,as far as the Game being able to spot You with Bright Orange, They definitely can, they might not tell the difference in color but on the other hand it makes You stand out. I personally am against wearing Orange or bright colors, If I was worried about my safety, I would stay home and bake cookies. Just Saying.
