After battling through the most forgettable gyms and Elite Four, I heard this theme entering Cynthia's chamber and was like "Seems a little dramatic, am I really going to die here?" I died there. Many times.

There's just something about her having an entrance theme that makes you shit your pants anytime you enter that room, even if she's somewhere else that theme follows her, it's the incarnation of why do I hear boss music in pokemon games.

Cynthia bullied me so much as a child. And she's hands down the most memorable champion for me. Probably because Platinum was my second pokemon game, the first one being ruby. Cynthia's fight is my favorite of the whole series, with Ghetsis as a close second.

I was deep asleep listening to my favorite songs playlist. This came on and I went from dead asleep, to 100% awake and fight mode activated within seconds.

As an OG Pokémon guy. Blue and Lance in gen one were great champions. Steven and jaun in gen3 wasn't bad. But Cynthia Gen 4 set the bar so high. Her team is one of the best built teams in the game.

Cynthia’s team was an absolute menace for its time. Spiritomb with no weaknesses, probably a Pokémon most players never seen on their entire playthrough till her. A bulky Milotic, versatile togekiss, Lucario with I believe extreme speed? (Correct me if I’m wrong. And that absolutely menacing Garchomp who’d disrespect your entire team. Top tier Champ, top tier Pokémon, top tier music.

I remember the first time I got into that battle with Cynthia ages ago. And I remember her subsequently destroying my team over and over and over again. She was the biggest wall I had ever had in a Pokémon game and it’s why I love her so much.

Some tips for people who still struggle against Cynthia: DP: Two of her Pokemon are weak to Ice - Roserade and Garchomp. You'll want either a fast or bulky Pokemon with an ice type attack on your team - I'd strongly recommend a bulky water type with Ice Beam for this, but holding onto a choice scarfed or focus sashed Weavile that knows Avalanche specifically to try and one-shot Garchomp is also a good strategy. A Lucario Mirror Match can be a decent idea for dealing with her Lucario, but you're better off trying to take it out with Earthquake. Use a Gliscor for this, as it hard-counters Lucario. Milotic is annoying, it's got a lot of bulk and a ton of special defense and knows Aqua Ring, a healing move that works over time. But here's a fun fact - there's an early-game electric type that's built specifically for taking down bulky water type walls - Luxray. Thunder Fang isn't the best move but it's got enough power to be usable here in combination with Luxray's respectable attack stat, STAB and super effective damage, boosted by a Life Orb if you've got one. You could also try using a Pikachu holding a Light Ball that knows Volt Tackle, but that's a lot more effort and, well, Light Ball Pikachu is a cripplingly overspecialized pick for the rest of the game. Gastrodon is not a huge threat, but it's difficult to find a check for it. You basically need a grass type for this, there aren't a lot of non-grass Pokemon that can learn good grass moves. Spritomb is honestly a huge joke. While it does have some decent bulk and doesn't have any weaknesses, it also doesn't have a lot of resistances - just an immunity to normal, fighting and psychic and a resistance to poison, and while its moveset may give decent offensive coverage, Spiritomb isn't exactly an offensive powerhouse. Honestly, just use whatever. Though I'd recommend using a water or ground type against it just so that Cynthia sends out her Roserade next, so you can then just wait out the embargo. Pt: She's easier here than in DP, as you have more options to work with and she replaces her Gastrodon (which is annoying to fight against) with a Togekiss (which is just another target for Luxray or your ice beam user). The above advice applies, though there's an extra note about Togekiss - it's an absolute joke. It's got Hustle for its ability, with a moveset made up of nothing but special attacks so it's not even using its ability anyway. Also, Milotic had Aqua Ring replaced with Dragon Pulse for some reason, Garchomp knows Flamethrower instead of Brick Break, Lucario replaces Psychic and Earthquake with Shadow Ball and Stone Edge, and Spiritomb replaced Embargo with Shadow Ball. They really nerfed her for this fight. Just watch out for Roserade's Toxic. Pt - Post Stark Mountain: As long as you're keeping up with the higher levels, this fight is somewhere in between DP and Pt. Spritomb replaces Shadow Ball with Ominous Wind, giving it two moves that could potentially boost its stats instead of one but reducing its offensive power in the process. Roserade is less of a threat here, dropping Toxic in favor of Shadow Ball. Togekiss is still a joke. Lucario, Milotic and Garchomp get their old movesets back. Strategy is basically the same. Undella Town: The problem here is that your Pokemon options in BW and B2W2 are kinda iffy. She's got a lot of fast, offensive Pokemon in a game where most Pokemon are slow, high-power attackers with average bulk. The strategies are mostly the same here, though her Spiritomb actually now takes advantage of its bulk. The two Pokemon I need to mention here, however, are Elektross and Braviary. Elektross is just an annoying Pokemon to deal with in general, Cynthia's isn't really exceptional in that regard. Use whatever strategy worked against Ghetsis's Elektross. Braviary is a glass cannon, I recommend using a rock type here. In B2W2 she replaces Braviary with Glaceon, which is legitimately the worst Pokemon she uses in any of her appearances. You can just blast it with a fire type move or sick a fighting type on it. BDSP - First Match: The addition of the Fairy Type gives you super effective options against Spiritomb, as well as backup plans against Garchomp. Other than that, refer to the DP guide. Her Pokemon now have held items. Watch out for Garchomp's Yachi Berry, the first ice type attack you use against it will only do normal super effective damage now instead of double. BDSP - Rematch (Pre Stark Mountain): This basically her Pt team with some Undella Town movesets. Again, the strategies are the same. BDSP - Post Stark Mountain: Ok, Porygon Z with Boltbeam (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam)? Yikes. If there's a time to use a Lucario of your own against Cynthia, this is it. Other than that, the strategies are again the same. PWT (B2W2), Battle Tree(SMUSUM), Battle Tower (BDSP): You should already be running a competitive team here. If you're not then you really shouldn't be messing with battle facilities until you've built up a competitive team, they're intended to provide a training ground for competitive players.

Well…. There’s a reason GameFreak made a Battletheme version of this song against VOLÓ in Legends Arceus….. ITS TERRIFYING AS HELL. And it works so well for BOTH CYNTHIA AND VOLÓ!

I played Blue when it was still new as a kid, but I never really played the others on account of my GBC being stolen. As the years went by I just never really played any other mainline Pokemon game until X/Y. Aside from Blue and Lance, I never really knew about the other Champions, and even now I can't name any of them, even the ones I've since beaten. Except for one. I knew about Cynthia.

Once upon a time I was playing pokemon platinum with a friend of mine. After a difficult battle it came down to hippowdon vs togekiss, Cynthia used a full restore so we lost. The next battle we won easy because we lead jolteon for her spiritomb instead of lickilicky.

gotta say, they dont make em like cynthia anymore. hardest battles ive had in a pokemon games souly lye againsed cynthia/volo i guess, red and that random ass gamefreak guy in pokemon black and white 2 whose zebstrika just solo'd my whole team. genuinly cant think of another person who i even remotely struggled againsed volo was eh, i was caught off guard having to fight giratina twice but my second attempt i only lost a single mon so it was eh.

I swear people who think cynthia is hard have never had an ice type pokemon or a grass type. Most of her team is weak to ice/grass ffs. I dont know how anyone ever had trouble with her she was honestly one of the easiest champions i ever had, hardest ones for me in order were Ghetsis(i say he counts.) Lance, Alder, Blue rematch, Iris, Steven/wallace, Cynthia/volo(swept both with mainly abomasnow.) Leon, Diantha, Hau/kukui, that chick from scarlet or violet i forget her name as shes always called primera. So lol.
