“I always apologize to the two Erics [Clapton and Johnson], ‘You have no idea how much I’ve ripped from you,’” joked Joe Bonamassa during a recent video with KZfaqr Rick Beato. The Grammy-winning bluesman followed that up with a gracious response: “We all get it from somewhere.”
That “somewhere” is a muse that molds every guitarist’s individualistic style and voice. For example, Eddie Van Halen shook the world and confounded guitarists with his explosive two-hand, finger-tapped “Eruption” performance on Van Halen’s 1978 debut. Yngwie Malmsteen put listeners in awe with his dazzlingly clean and swift sweep arpeggios. They both became synonymous with those talented techniques, and were heralded as pioneering groundbreakers. But where did they get the ideas from before expressing and executing them it in their signature style? Both took a page out Steve Hackett’s prog-rock playbook.
Hackett’s two-hand tapping technique can be heard in the early ’70s on Genesis’ albums Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Hackett’s sweep picking was first heard on the 1973 Selling England by the Pound track “Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.” Those contributions alone should’ve been enough to land Hackett in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (His combined work on six Genesis albums in six years earned him a slot in 2010.) On top of that smashing success and influence, he’s recorded nearly 30 solo albums-ranging from prog-rock and blues to world and classical-over a dozen live albums, and even traded licks with Steve Howe in the short-lived supergroup GTR. Hackett might not be recalled like the other guitar greats, but without his shoulders to stand on, those first-name giants might not have shone as bright.
Hackett’s headlining Ryman Auditorium tour stop in late October 2023 celebrated the 50th anniversary of Genesis’ Foxtrot-a seminal, prog-rock tour de force that was recorded when singer Peter Gabriel, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, drummer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and Hackett were in their early 20s. Before the show, PG’s Chris Kies was invited onstage to go over the minimal-but-mighty setup used by Hackett. First tech Vince O’Malley detailed a Fernandes goldtop (once owned by Gary Moore) with its limitless Sustainer circuit and a treasured nylon-string Alvarez built by master luthier Kazuo Yairi in the 1970s. Then Hackett himself joined the fun and plugged his Fernandes into his pedalboard to show off all the sounds, tones, and colors he requires to honor his days in Genesis.

Thank you for using the correct terminology: under appreciated. When someone’s favorite guitar player isn’t featured on the cover of Guitar Player magazine or ranked in the top 10 of Rolling Stone magazine Top guitar players, they say he’s/shes “underrated”. Thats false. Nobody would claim Hacketts ability as “low”. But yes, he’s less recognized and under appreciated for his playing and accomplishments than he should be. Underrated? No. Under appreciated? Definitely.

I've always been a big fan of Steve's playing, admittedly I got into the "classic" Genesis a couple years after listening to the Phil Collins-era but Hackett always blew me away with his playing on classic tunes like "Supper's Ready" (first song from that era I heard after a family friend played it in his car once), "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight", "Watcher of the Skies" and "Firth of Fifth" is just otherworldly and it's absolutely fucking awesome so it was definitely cool seeing him and his tech talk about gear (although the baby powder bit did made me laugh since I genuinely did not expect that)

It's funny that a lot of these older players like Hackett, Neal Schon, Dave Amato, Alex Lifeson all use Floyds on Les Pauls (or LP style) which back in the day was considered sacrilege. Same with Engl... people think they're only metal amps yet Hackett, Steve Morse and Blackmore all use them.
@oskarileikos
@oskarileikos 7 ай бұрын
Isn't it nowadays when it's considered a sacrilege, not back in the day? In the 70s and 80s those were just old guitars, nowadays they are of course "priceless vintage artifacts"
@Darth.Shredder
@Darth.Shredder 7 ай бұрын
@@oskarileikos It wasn't just about looks. The Les Paul was also a thick chunk of wood and Gibson weren't exactly innovators at that time. I remember I was in Sam Ash in the early 80's and a guy wanted to order a Les Paul with a Floyd. They called Gibson and the Gibson rep laughed at them on the phone. They didn't even have a custom shop until the 90's. The real point was that it's not hair metal guys that are known for using Floyds on Les Pauls - it's older players.

Robert Fripp has been using the identical guitar outfitted with all the same bits and pieces for years. Who had it first ??? I noticed just a few years back that Steve was using his Godin Signature guitar? I was a Genesis fan since the beginning. There was tiny, tiny Brit record import store where you could buy all the records. You could not hear them so it was a case of read the liner notes and , LOL. My first record was the Beno LP. It was released 3 months before it arrived at the store. I jumped the pond and moved to London UK's West End in 71 and was guitarist for the prog rock band Tallis. I have not played a cover tune since 1969. I and am still at it. I will be 77 in 2 weeks, LOL.

You don't get a bigger sound out of heavier strings. Just more bass. Lighter strings are brighter. I've used Extra Slinky 0.008's since the mid-70s and until SRV came along, nobody thought it was in any way amazing. Much easier bending that requires a lighter touch. Rick Beato did a series on it. BTW, Steve Hackett is one of my favorite guitarists! Phenomenal musician.
