Brothers Jake and Sam Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet serve up buckets of old-school, paint-peeling tone and deep riffs. Fueled by a big industry buzz, the Kiszka brothers have been logging some serious miles across the globe. During a recent two-night, sold-out stay in Nashville, Jake and Sam talked to PG’s John Bohlinger about their live setups and musical influences.
Jake Kiszka records and tours with his beloved and abused 1961 Gibson Les Paul which features two PAFs. The LP is strung with D’Addario .010s. Currently, gaff tape holds the lower bout of the guitar together.
Sam Kiszka’s favorite bass is an early ’80s Fender Precision Bass body with a Jazz Bass neck. Although between string changes during our interview (the first since he’s owned the instrument), Kiszka usually keeps it strung with D’Addario flatwound (.050-.070-.085-.105) strings.

going back and watching this again after watching their most recent rig rundown, and it's so amazing to listen to sam talk about his keys and his pedal board and how he admires people who play with a full pedal board and he said "maybe someday ill get there" and he's there now. it all came full circle.

Yes, you can see how john, he really is the real deal! A very good interview! I grew up in the 80's, and attended a lot of great concerts. For me, it sure is nice to see a young talented band out of Michigan, USA, with a great story they have to tell, Forming as 3 brothers, 2 of which are twins, along w/ a friend from school , drumming. etc. very well spoken....and nice! I grew up in the 80's, and attended a lot of great concerts. It's been a very long time since I've been this excited about a new band. Like them or hate them, I'll leave that up to you However for me, I believe, that this band, they too, are the real deal!

Hey, lay off on the criticism. They're kids (gosh, they're like in their late teens, early 20s) and they're REALLY good at what they do! Give them time and proper support and they'll come up with something awesome. Did Rush sound original in the beginning? And Zep? Besides, original doesn't automatically mean better. They're a GREAT rock band, and they sound genuine, which is what matters in the end.

Yes they sound like Zeppelin, but they also ROCK! SRV sounded like Hendrix at times, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a true talent in his own right. And let’s not forget the dozens of bands that made whole careers our of knocking off the Beatles. They play instruments (some of them play several), they write their own stuff, and they rock. In today’s industrialized music factory I find them to be a breath of fresh air.

i actually LOVE the fact that they don't have much gear! focus on actually playing and learning instead of kinda hiding behind all those effects and such. my teatcher always asks me why i want all those fancy extra things and guitars when i have a perfectly decent (actually awesome) telecaster, and hes right. i don't ACTUALLY need all the effects that i drool over or that two hum setup if i just learn to play my tele to its full potential. still really want all that stuff but i'm also not very good at playing sooooo...
