Your video was an eye-opener for me. I figured you purchased a rough prepared surface. Because of this video, I'll "see" your beautiful pastel paintings with more understanding & appreciation. Thanks!

Hi Lynn, I'm a house painter as my job, there are several exterior wall paints which contain grit particles to them, I use those to create texture for my boards, ready to use, in any colour you can imagine with no need for mixing ingredients... try mineral paints or quartz based paints, they are also meant to resist to rain and sun with no fading through the years ♡

I LOVE this idea. So often there are options that can be found at the hardware store with an added cost benefit as well. Thanks for looking at my video and for the tip.

I work in pastels, too. To get the textured surface I like, I start with 184 lb. toned paper. It is thick enough that it won't buckle or warp when wet mediums are applied to it. Next, I put a few drops of Liquitex clear gesso on the paper and spread it over the surface with a small fine foam roller. It dries very quickly !! The gesso dries clear, as the name suggests. If, at any time, I want to radically change some section of my 'painting' i can wipe or erase the pastel away and reapply some gesso to the area I'm working on if the process of wiping /erasing has removed the textured surface.

Fabulous video. I'm looking for something finer to make my own Pastelmat surface. Pastelmat is crazy expensive. Any ideas? TY!

Hi Lynn - I just wanted to say that I get that same textured look painting on cotton canvas (that you'd use for oil or acrylic painting). You can then frame it as you would any pastel painting with glass overlay. I found an artist who lives in San Juan Capistrano who does this also and I really love that textured look. Plus, it is much easier. Give it a try sometime and see what you think.

Thanks for taking a look at my video and taking time to reach out to me. Isn't it wonderful that there are so many different ways to make art? You would not have the same look in the finished painting because the texture that would l be visible would be the texture of the canvas rather than the texture of the brush strokes used to apply the ground and I love that brush stroke texture. Happy painting!

Thanks for the video. Why did you add pumice to it? What will happen if you only use Golden Fine Pumice Gel without additional pumice?
@lynngoldsteinart
@lynngoldsteinart 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. The pumice simply adds a bit more texture. I would advise you to try it with and without to see what you prefer. Fine pumice may be purchased online through Dakota Pastels, and it is affordable and lasts for years. I have the link above. Sadly, gatorfoam is no longer available through Foam Board Source. From what I can tell that supplier has closed.

Why do you add pumice to the Golden Fine Pumice Gel? Doesn't the Golden product have pumice?
@lynngoldsteinart
@lynngoldsteinart Жыл бұрын
I simply prefer adding a bit more pumice for added texture. The Golden product (and Golden products are excellent, btw) will do the trick if you don't want the added step. Thanks for taking a look at my video!
