I had to see this video when I saw the intro page with map. My parents and I circumnavigated Australia in 1969-70 in a truck camper that we brought with us from the states. Needless to say conditions were different then and there were long stretches of unpaved roads in some areas (Nullarbor and the northwest in particular). Our truck camper (a slide-in on a 'ute') got a lot of stares; there didn't seem to be any others like it in Oz at the time. As I recall, the many council camps were quite inexpensive back then. We didn't have any major problems with the vehicle (1966 Chevy pickup, 305-V6 with manual 4-speed) but went through a number of tires. Red road dust infiltrated the camper's rear door; my dad closed the door on a tarp to seal it better. We followed a generally coastal route including all the mainland capital cities plus Broome, Darwin, Alice, Cairns, Gold Coast. The most bleak stretch I remember was east of Tennant Creek. How times have changed! Now travelers expect to have cell and internet and more facilities everywhere! Oops, apologies if I hijacked your topic. Good practical travelers' advice in your video.

No, you didn't hijack anything. I love these stories. The roads and communication have changed, as has the world we live in. We are now able to visit some of our most isolated parts of the country relatively easily, and whilst that is good, it also means that the probability of destroying their uniqueness is greater. The Gibb River Road is an example - it was a track for trucks to transport cattle out of the Kimberley, and it was a harsh environment. These days, virtually anybody can go there, and you are battling to find a camp spot, which these days is in organised camp grounds... the magic has gone. And I guess that is why many of us try and find outback roads and the like to try and experience some of that old adventure. Thank you for saying hello, cheers Laurie.

Hi Laurie, just saw this come up. Some great advice and I'm sure many will find it useful. My friends in Adelaide are doing a round trip of Australia soon and taking a few months to do it. Will suggest they have a look at this. Hope all going well there. Jan

Good morning Jan. I should have been in bed an hour ago. I took a drive to film a couple more roads today, first time I've left the man cave for a week or so. Lovely weather, but WE NEED RAIN dammit 🤪. Did you get my reply to your last email? Laurie

Since I cannot drive, when I camp, I use a solar panel and solar battery charger when I camp. Yes I know it does not work at night. But the battery is charged enough to keep it working over night. Oh, and its Quiet. Here in the US, motorized generators are being phased out. Too loud and smell bad. Ah yes the metric system. 100 kph is 62 mph, which is not by US standards very fast. But if your pulling a trailer, it might be too fast. You do very good video's.

G'day James. Yep, solar is good, but doesn't help running a full on desktop computer system, running the nicrowave and a/c. I live in my van full time, and I'm not prepared to switch to these new devil's system batteries LOL. (Lithium stuff).

Never, and I mean NEVER fully trust Google Maps. I've heard some pretty bad stories of people who did. Plus, back in the day. That new fangled GPS, might lead you off a cliff. And I have heard stories of that happening. Your better off with paper maps or a book of maps, forgot what they call it. But yes, paper maps all the way. But then again, I am a tad old fashioned and Old :) Stay safe.

You are not wrong. I tell the story of a fuel truck I came across parked up at a wooden bridge over a river on a back road. He was concerned about the weight of his truck vs bridge capacity. I asked him where he was going, and he told me Sydney, and I asked why he was on this road. He told me his GPS sent him here. I told him never trust a GPS and use paper maps as well. He said he was from New Zealand, and had only been here a week. I don't think he was impressed when I told that's ok, we could teach him how to read a map. 😁😅
