Matt doing the chimney cleaning made me think back 30 some years when my son (also named Matt) had a chimney sweep business. He was a career firefighter, so heights and fire were second nature. It's amazing how everything you and your family do is so much like my people in Kentucky did. I could close my eyes and swear I was listening to kentucky folks. My father used the word directly all the time. We moved north when I was nine but daddy and my stepmother still talked like that. We always had garden food even after we moved and cornbread or biscuits. I am so glad I found your Chanel, It's like being back home.

How great it would be to "sit a spell " and have a chit chat with yall. My Dad is in his last years and has worked hard all his life and raised 10 kids; 9 girls and 1 boy. I guess what you guys have is what I wished I had grown up with. I would have felt more at home if my mother had ever calmed down. She was so high-strung. Dr. Tried to give her Valum when she was young she took one pill and said "I want to be in control and this pill makes me loopy." I would have preferred Loopy rather than having to walk on eggshells day in and day out. So keep up the beautiful family videos you guys are great people never forget that. I am a gentle soul and my Grandmother and I was so close it was the only reason I stayed home until she passed when I was 17. She was my saving grace to be honest.

Matt's chimney cleaning made me think of my dad and uncle cleaning the chimney at Granny's house. The would select the right size cedar tree, tie it tight to a long rope and one guy on the roof and the other on the hearth would pull on the rope till the cedar had scrubbed out the soot. As a kid I found this very entertaining.

Your story of the old man working, and your comments about having a work ethic reminded me of something that happened years ago. There was in our church a family of farmers, all born and raised on the family farm. Dad, his son and grandson. The son had been to town, so was away for several hours by the time he came back home to discover his dad on the barn roof doing some repairs. The Dad and son got into a bit of a heated debate over who should be up there doing the job. The son declaring he should be the one as Dad was too old to be climbing around on the barn roof. Telling this story to the folks in church brought a few chuckles. Bear in mind, the son was in his early 70's and Dad was in his 90's and you'll see the humor.

Every so often I come across one of your older videos that I haven't watched completely. Today, this one showed up, so I watched it. We had a fireplace in the home where I grew up. About every 10th fire, we threw a handful of rock salt (which we had on hand for the winter to treat the sidewalk) onto the fire. This removed a great deal of the creosote throughout the season and, therefore, the chimney did not require extensive cleaning each year. It really worked!

You and Matt remind me so much of my husband and myself - 20 years ago! Now I have to hire someone to clean our chimney though we try to do as much as we can ourselves. Our gardens are now all raised beds because I can't bend over so much any more, but we still enjoy getting out daily and working our beds.

I always feel better after I watch one of your videos. I like your vest and it looks especially good over that russet orange shirt. My daddy was one of those always working types. Outside of working at his paid job, he'd be in his shop building something or inventing something, or he'd be working in the garden. At night he'd work at fixing busted TVs and stereos and cameras. I don't remember my folks ever hiring anyone to do anything. Whether it was electrical, plumbing, roofing, automotive, masonry or whatever, Daddy did it himself. He built our house himself. And then I went and married another one. My husband always had a project in his hands. If we went to stay with relatives for a visit, after a few hours he'd get antsy. The smart ones would ask him to fix something and then he'd settle down and be happy as a clam. Any time he'd be upset or worried, he'd prune trees. If none of ours needed pruning, he prune the neighbors' (with their blessing).

Yes! My mama would say ‘drectly’ when I’d ask when we were going to do somethin’. As a child, I knew it meant pretty soon. It was years before I understood that drectly was directly ☺️

We just had our chimney cleaned and loaded up on wood for the winter, but we won’t start a fire until it’s cold during the day and the night. We have electric heat too but we turned the AC off the first night it was cold and have had the windows open since. Our wood stove will heat our whole house throughout the winter and we save so much money during the winter by not having the electric heat on. I love this time of year the best. 😊

My Grandmas both used to say drecly. I was born in a very small town in Oklahoma. We were not city people by any means. I miss that small town. It was a wonderful place to grow up. When I go home to visit, my kids and Grandkids are so surprised that we are related to everyone. The Grandgirls talk about how many cousins that they discover they have. LOL!

Look right behind your left shoulder! Your hoop style green house is a perfect place to hang your pepper plants. What you & Matt should look into for early plantings and frost protection if your crops is hoop style portable green houses. As long as your have the hoop frame work, it’s just a matter of setting it up, and tarping 40 to 60 mmm plastic. If there is a military resale place by ya, please check out their web pages. You can get hoop style field tents that have fully open up, so you let the sun on, and you can close up all of some of the sections when the temps drop protecting the plants from the frost. We use them on the farm. It’s seems to work.

Once at the end of the season my older sister had us younger kids pick everything that was left in the garden and she made and canned vegetable soup. It was so delicious that winter.

I'm envious of those that can work. I'm disabled and I don't have a day without pain. I think that's why I enjoy your videos. I can't work. But, it's so rewarding watching you work like I want to.

My father in law was helping me put up a barn. He asked, "you like to work? I like to work. I was born to work." He had too, following an old team of horses with a plow, so galled from sweat and heat that a can of Mexana Heat Powder was all that would give relief, helping every neighbor that he could, refusing to sit under an air conditioner in his old age for fear it would make him soft. "I guess it's alright. Can't say I relish it but I like to see things accomplished and I like knowin" I had a hand in it." He said, " you know I like home too. You know, if you stay home you know you're always welcome." The older I get the more I realize, that aside from the jokes, Charlie was a wise old man.

Matt-you and my husband and older son have that same dream of just hunting and fishing for a living. While there are some advantages to modern times, I would love to.go back and live like the Ingalls family (with all their knowledge, of course. I'd probably die if I lived that way now.) I remember her writing a couple of different times about how comforting and pretty it was to see their food harvest stored for the winter. It seemed like a feeling of security.

You can always dry the peppers 🌶 too by putting a thread through them and hang them in a sunny dry spot of your kitchen. Also I freeze them without washing them.

Wonderful day spent preparing for the winter! I carried in wood last week and had my chimney cleaned late spring of this year. I don't so heights, plus I have a steep roof system. Yesterday, Saturday, I had my first fire in the stove. Love getting it ready and then run outside to watch the smoke come out of the flue. Thanks for sharing once again!

My Mama used the word "dreckly" often. In my mind I always thought it meant "in a few minutes" or "in a little bit". All southerners and country people from all over seem to do things in a similar way and use the same language in the same way. There are amazingly so many similarities between Mississippi and Appalachia. Really did enjoy this video. I remember doing things at the last minute right before the first frost ad y'all are doing.

Tipper transfer your peppers to some of your grow bags, and place them in your greenhouse . It might be possible to also hang your pepper plants in the greenhouse over winter . Just a thought ! Thank you 💕

Tipper if you have alot of green maters you can make green salsa. You take maters, any hot peppers, serrano or jalapeno, garlic clove, salt, hot sauce if your peppers arent hot enough, white onion, olive oil. Process how chunky you like. We love it. Tipper you reckon the bees were after Matt because they thought he was so sweet he must be a flower? 😄

If you pick your green Tommy Toe tomatoes and put them in a paper bag, they will slowly ripen. Thought there might be a cool corner in that busy basement for one paper bag. ;>) I've had fresh salad tomatoes for New Years doing that. (Just don't forget to peek in the bag once in a while!)
