Home bottling is a great way to preserve the garden bounty. Not only are the jars beautiful to look at, but the food tastes great. One challenge that we have faced over the years is finding the ideal way to store our bottles. Jonathan designed the perfect solutions and this bottle room has served us well for over 10 years.
In this video, Jonathan explains the design and shows you the basics so that you could tweak his design and create the perfect space to store your beautiful bottles.
Check out TheProvidentPrepper.org for some great ideas to both grow your own food and preserve the harvest.

Great shelves. I have always been frustrated watching people store jars without a strip of wood keeping them from falling on the floor. So much prepping just for it to smash on the floor. All they needed was a strip of wood to hold things in. You are the first person I have seen do this. 2 thumbs up.

Used your design on a small 7 x 8 ft canning room. Was able to get two 82" x 24" shelving units , each with 6 shelves. This is an incredibly strong shelf design. No worries about our hard earned canned goods winding up on the ground. Thanks for this awesome video.

I love these shelves and am in the process of making the same. Only difference for me is that I put a strip of cardboard between the jars that can physically touch... we're also in Earthquake country and losing all of my food storage would be disastrous.

Another thing to put between the jars is foundation seal foam from big box stores. We used it when we built our garage-mahal and found it was great to weave between the jars. Very inexpensive too.

This is what I'm looking for. I do know full pint jars weigh at least 20lbs per case of 12 of my chicken soup. I live in an apartment, so need something that would be freestanding also. I'd prefer wood shelving, but atm I have 2 honey do wire shelving units and am not super comfortable when it comes time to hold the full jars.

That is a thing of beauty 😍 I love it. I am currently using some industrial grade temporary shelves until I can get my cellar finished (we are set to begin construction in a couple weeks 😃) I'm building crates with corners that extend up above the jars, enough above so you can lift a jar in and out without unstacking. The bottom of them has a lip that will lock each crate to the one below it. I am hoping this will help keep me well organized and I can easily rearrange depending on what can good we are utilizing the most at that given time. Our meals are very different depending on the season so the ability to re- prioritize my access is very helpful. (I can grab the crate of canned chili mix and relocate it to my working pantry during the winter when we eat a lot of chili.) there are plans on Pinterest for similar crates. These crates could easily go in shelves or can stand in a stack on their own. Plus, they are easy to grab and relocate in a hurry if we ever have flooding our need to relocate for some unforeseen reason.

Great shelves! Im planinh for aunit in my furnace room also. I plan to store 5 gallon on floor, then 1/2 gallons, quart, and so forth. Basically smaller sizes above bigger sizes. My questio is.... How mny inches of head room do you have above your jar height? I assume I can use the same amount for each shelf height, just add that to the different jar heights. Im looking forward t your reply Again, great shelves, thanks for the video!

You have built some wonderfull shelves. Particularly the furring straps across the front of the shelves. I have been Puzzling about how to do that and make it effective and still get jars in-and-out. You made it look simple. I was leaning towards using some one by four attached on top of the shelf to strengthen the shelf and keep the jars in. I was thinking about how high they could be. Yours are much higher than I was picturing and all the better for it. How high is the the top of the of the jar stop and what is the free space between the shelves at the front? The potential to protect a lot your hard work and food supply is important. I think the chances are great that a lot of good food will end up on the floor when there is an earthquake.

Hey Dave...thanks for your comments. Clear space between shelves is 8 inches. Top of fir strip is 3 inches above the shelf. And you are right...there will be lots of food lost off peoples shelves when a quake hits. Thanks again...and thanks for being part of the solution!

Hey Bubba...blueprints are all in my head, but I can give you some measurements. Clear distance between shelves is 8-inches. Top of front rail is 3 inches from the shelf. I've been thinking and planning out how to build mine. I've got a nice U shaped room in the basement that's not enclosed. I was hoping lumber prices would come back down some but probably not. I had an idea to replace the socks. What about a pool noodle slit and slid over the rail. Granted this would be best for someone building from scratch so the space can be accounted for. There are also thin craft foam sheets that have an adhesive back. Cut the sheets in strips to fit the rails and attach on the inside.
