My pantry shelves are tight up against the wall...so no putting new at the back and moving things forward. ... I load my shelves Side to Side. Load on the left and remove from the right. Works for me, maybe it will help someone else ❤

I didn't cheat! It's still Dec 31st. I just order a wheel of cheese. 😆 It's going in the freeze dryer when it gets here. I took today and put up my carrots for the challenge, and tomorrow, we are going to be making our masher balls. When I discovered that gem...OH yes! 😆 Take 10 to 20 pounds of potatoes, peel and boil. Then mash- hand mixer is best. Add only enough butter and milk to make it smooth. Last time I think I used 1/2 stick of butter for 10 pounds, and maybe 1 cup milk. Bust out the freeze dryer trays, and the cookie scoop. Fill your trays, and pop them into the freeze. It takes about 2 or 3 hours to freeze. Then into freezer bags. I have one bowl I use for mashers, so, I pull out enough balls to fill the bowl. Microwave for a couple if minutes, add your butter and enough milk to make them creamy. DONE!

Freezers inventoried, check. Storage room inventoried, check. Last year, I was able to feed hubby and myself from Jan through mid April on our stored foods. I did give myself the grace of $10.00 each week for dairy and fresh veggies. This year, I'm hoping to get through end of May. I feel like I'm behind the 8 ball, but my hubby thinks we're good. We'll see how it goes. This years resolution is to take 5 more items out of the grocery store items, and make from scratch. I hope everyone has a bright and peaceful 2024!

The more you can get your family involved, the more they respect food and understand. Even the littlest can help and feel so productive when they help you inventory. And yes, they don't need to do without you- 100%agreed- it would get messed up! 😅

Oh, the one thing I do with commercially canned goods is write the year and the food on the lid. I've lost labels and this has saved my butt from "mystery meal"

Such great advice. We live surrounded by hay fields and when the hay gets cut we know the battle of mice begins. We bought containers to store anything they may try to get into. When i do rotation, i do cleaning. A great habit to start . Im so excited for this next month

My pantry organization has been off the rails for most of the year so my inventory is going to have to be started by my canning tracker instead. It won't be a really accurate look at the older products but it will at least get me started. My goals this month won't be eating the pantry down but rather to target my 'hit list' of oldest products as well as getting to the bottom of the chest freezer for older meats to either can or eat fresh.

Blessings from Chicago. As a single senior, my January challenge is replacing some of the fall and winter produce I ate through spring and summer. I inventory all of my prepps. I then go to the Green City Winter Market and buy what I acually used up. I can, pickle, ferment, dehydrate and freeze my goods. I stop shopping at the end of January until Spring/Summer farmers markets reopen. I stay out of the stores for the winter. Every now and then, I need a fresh salad. ❤❤

Totally off topic, but your hair looks really good in this video :) If other people (like my spouse) use something from the pantry I'm ok with that, I just ask him to either leave me the lid (from home canned) or the jar/container for anything else. My pantry is two 4 ft wide shelving units. The bottom shelf of both is for longer term storables like flour, dry beans, rice, etc. Above that, one shelving unit is for store bought and the other unit is for home canned. The home canned unit has more shelves of shorter height, while the store bought unit has an extra tall shelf to accommodate a double stacked cansolidator system. My very favorite item from Thrive freeze dried (back when they were still called "Shelf Reliance"). The top shelf of both units currently holds my canners as well as toilet paper & paper towels. I have a set of curtains that hooks onto the top of the upright shelf poles and helps keep light and dust away from contents, also just looks prettier as the shelves are in our dining room.

Hi Leisa, I have cleaned out 3 of my 4 kitchen cupboards where I store food. One is what I'm planning on storing my Thrive Life food. I have started a list of what is currently in there and what I'm planning to buy. My home canned food is stored in a couple of places and I know what is in there. So I'm getting more organized.

I started inventorying my can goods this afternoon. Tomorrow I'll do my canning and then my 3 freezers later this week. I need to identify what to can this coming month from my freezer. Tomorrow, I'm hoping to can pineapple and apple pie filling to get those fruits out of my garage and into jars. Looking forward to the start of Canuary!

I just reorganized, checked my lids, checked the dates and rotated my stock. Going to work on using up store canned goods and replacing with home canned goods. I will be eating a lot of beans!😂😮

I've been sick since Wednesday night, so has hubby, but yesterday I started my inventory. I grabbed a chair & one of those folding TV tray tables & camped out in the hallway with a notebook & pen to inventory my linen closet turned pantry, shelf by shelf. Still need to do the kitchen cupboards & the longer term pantry shelves in the spare room/office & the long term storage (mainly freeze-dried) items in the basement. I did toss out a few things that were well beyond their lifespan (like a bottle of ranch dressing that had a best by date in 2017...lol) once I get everything inventoried, I'm going to transfer that information to the sheets from my pantry planner & slide those sheets into heavy duty plastic sleeves that will be hung on the inside of cabinet doors or hanging on open shelves so that items can be marked off without having to redo the paper inside every time.

I just bought 2 cabinets that I am filling up with store (and some home) canned foods, that I had in totes and boxes. Realized I need at least 2 more cabinets. After I get them organized, then I will do inventory. Trying to get my house organized this year. Other than basic items, milk, bread (until I can get everything else done, then will make homemade), fresh fruits/veggies until garden time, and other small things. I plan on canning alot, and doing a garden, and finally having a couple yard sales to declutter so can sale my old house. I hope everyone has a happy, healthy,and safe 2024.

I thought of you and hung my head in shame yesterday 😊 went to make my dip for a party. The last time i looked, i had 4 boxes of velveeta. Nope, space was empty. Crap. Well, looking at the shelves, I spotted my augason farms cheese spread cans. It works amazing!! No one realized it wasn't made with velveeta. (In my defense, a lot of people had been in my pantry before Christmas, I give everyone a gift bag and tell them to go pick out their own)

I built my pantry shelves and I made them 30 inches deep up against the wall so while they hold a lot of inventory, you can only see the first row. Your shelves are nice you can see everything on them. Maybe it’s time for a change.❤️🔥❤️🔥🇺🇸

I have a clipboard on my door to the pantry room. I write down everything I take out of that room. So if I have a beginning inventory of 24 cans of corn and I take out 3 cans that month I can adjust my inventory the next month and have a starting point for the next month. This also allows me to know what I may be getting low on and watch for sales on that item. I will start a new list in January to begin all over for the year. I also am able to add as I buy needed items

I highly recommend Jan Jackson’s book called 100 Day Pantry. It’s wonderful to fix meals using pantry items. I now use this book to purchase food for my pantry so everything is purchased with a specific purpose.

Thank you Thank you, Thank you, Being married and on social security, I doubted that I would have a serious instance to use my pantry. Nevertheless, I built, and built. Then, horror of horrors, my air conditioning and heating system went out. Even thou I have a home warranty, I have to come up with several thousand dollars. For the next 2-3 months, all of our income will go for replacing this system. This means that my 3 month pantry, will see us thru this difficult and trying time. If not for you, I don't know what I would do. We will be able to eat, survive with fans, and worry about catching up with other bills when we have heat and air. What a blessing! Keep on being you!

i have been properly canning and shelving jars of meat for a number of years. But I have been committing the sin of not rotating through, as has been easier to just go with fresh. Plus, I have not been confident with using the older meat cans for recipes. My resolve, very recently, DUE TO YOUR STRONG SUGGESTION, has been to organize and use the oldest cans first. Tonight, I opened a 2017 bottle of grass-fed ground beef and mixed with my pinto beans for quesadillas, not sure of outcome. The meat was perfectly red, the fat cap not rancid, the flavor and texture just like just new! Frankly, I was surprised the flavor was so delightful! All fed devoured the meals with no questions! Thank you for all your strong suggestions! You really are the guru in canning! I may email you with an obscure question or two, but I will identify myself as Karen.

Leisa, just ordered the planner. I've kept lists in the past but they became pages misplaced. I can already see what I've used and not on my shelves. Going to donate all those store canned veggies I don't use. Been canning applesauce and jams that the grandkids love. Santa brought me jars for those jams and jellies. Regarding dating: I use month & last digit of year (6-3 was canned June of 2023); I also write best by date of store bought items using same method to make it easy to see.

My household is doing a no buy January, this means we only by milk, fresh fruits and limited veggies. I want to see how much food we will be eating out of the pantry and try to save some money in January. Plus this will help rotate through the food. I know that the down stairs freezer is a whole another problem. That I will have to work up to. It gets treated as put food in it and forget it. So I know there is food that has been there wayy to long.

I have food all over my house. I have a dresser full of food I have a giant cabinet full of food I have storage bins in 3 walk-in closets. I have food in my laundry room over top of my cabinets in bins. I have a binder notebook with all my food listed but the problem is I don't subtract and sometimes I don't even add the new food. I have my large bins numbered. I have my small bins numbered. My paper products are all out in the garage . I don't list them. I have a huge toiletry closet . I still think I am not prepared if we do have a Cyber attack on the grid. That concerns me. I have generators and solar. I keep racking my brain to think what will I need plenty of for the long haul . Keep posting your ideas. We need them .

You can do this! If you're really nervous, it's ok to start with store bought. Lots of people (lots and lots) do food storage only with store bought items.

Already started my canurary , got black beans and potatoes and oranges in honey canned yesterday, long day but excited for another year of the pantry challenge been doing pantry challenge since I was a kid with eight of us kids. My parents always did only out of the pantry after Christmas as money was tight love watching your videos out of everyone you do the most canning.on KZfaq of all the channels I watch you’re always my go to when I need to look something back up. I hope you and Phil have a wonderful 2024 hoping that we have a better year but I know better.

I had to re-inventory 22 5 gallon buckets because my 12 yr old thought they were the "scraps" I told her she could draw on..ugh..she drew with a thick black sharpie. I now have to do 2 large freezers and my home-canned goods and an actual pantry. Take a deep breath it will be ok.

I’m coming along with this and Canuary but I’m starting late! My refrigerator died and we had to deal with that unplanned emergency post Christmas with our cash on hand.. anyhow, I will be jumping back onboard after January 2nd. I can’t start with 5 eggs and 1/2 gallon of milk and a quart of orange juice. On the upside, 2 gallons of thawed strawberries got made into jam, a thawed cooked pork loin got shredded for sandwiches, and I managed to pickle, cook, or salvage everything else except 1/2 bag of frozen broccoli that thawed out. The chickens got that.

Im really loving the project pantry book. Come january2nd im going to get started gettin my pantry organized. Such a huge task as im trying to move everything from one room into another. I have only 1 pantry - 1 person also. I have about 2 years of stores including freezer. I take 1/24 of each category and put it on the worktop level shelf. That is all I can use. In the past I did not cook much but now enjoy looking up recipes to use any 'strange/ new ingredient. I buy 90% of my food at big discounts, damaged packages, near sell by date etc. and as it is so cheap it is not a problem if I do not like something. It goes into the compost bin so gets used 1 way or other. But most things are fine. I cannot bring forward the next month until all meats, fish, veg. and fruit are used. Flour and rice are the main items not controlled in the same way.

I organized my bedroom pantry put everything that goes together did a inventory of everything,then I did my 2 chest freezers and my upright freezer that part is all done .I will be doing some canning this week I have 6 bags of frozen tomatoes and plenty of frozen chicken carcusses that will be done and my beef bones.My cousin who is a patotoe farmer came over and bought us over 100 pounds of russet and turnip and carrots.I will be making my 3 month meal plan n

If I'm only canning something once in February, I'll just write the month and year. If it's something I'm doing multiple batches, I'll add the day. This way, if there's a bad batch for whatever reason, I'd potentially be able to isolate the jars from that specific batch.

@summerrose I was in hospital and rehab and gone for a year. Mice got in and destroyed everything including clothing. They are destructive. I have feral cats now that keep the mice population under control outside. A product that works is one bite from the feed store. Irish spring soap is a deterrent but not 100%.

My oldest daughter is on a strict diet to control her inflammation. Going down a person who eats what I've stored - I went through all of my 'stores' and gifted 6 full bags of groceries to my cousin and her daughters (and their families). So now I know what I have on hand and can meal plan. I've also decluttered (I feel I'm always decluttering lol!) LOTS and opened up space in my kitchen! For example, the cabinets above my refrigerator is now *empty* !! Also, my fantasy self bakes all kinds of goodies! My actual self does not bake. So! I downsized to the needed things (flour, sugar) and got rid of the items I will never use (cake mixes, powdered sugar, etc) I now have condensed cabinets and cabinets that are only half full! I love it!

I'm going to use colored dots on my pantry food to label with best by dates. I am going back to use dots on 2022 and 2023 items. As I add food in 2024, it will get a dot. Going forward, I will have a quick way to identify what needs to be used first. Putting the date with a sharpie pen does work to a point, but you have to check the date over and over. Colored dots will be more obvious to me.

I got my inventory done Dec 26 & 27th. I'm so shocked!! Thank you for giving us the push to do it. 1 thing I did was make a separate list of stuff opened or needing to be used asap plus put stuff in a box of dry goods that got lost on my shelves. Jan 1 is going very well. Woohoo!!

How about a sticky tag on every can, when the can is removed, remove the tag and drop it in a jar.

Inventory is done, Monthly shopping trip done. Purchases pressure canned done. I'm going to give the pantry challenge a try this year. And while at it, I'm going to remodel my pantry. I have 1 item to buy, and I need sunlight to charge my drill/driver. Then I can get started. But I just took the dog out. It's cooling down, and there were tiny snowflakes coming down at 8 p.m. I'm not sure how soon I'll be getting some sun for my solar system to charge up that drill/driver. LOL, I guess it doesn't matter, I have all month. Good luck to everyone who is going to give it a shot, just to see if they can do it.

I did not buy anything. I do not plan on purchasing anything unless it's on sale and going into future stores. I am starting with 2021 and store bought! (those starting to expire. )Refrig was cleaned out today. Goal to empty freezer into 2024 jars. So will be doing canuary and pantry challenges simultaneously.

I am so excited that for the 1st time ever, neither myself nor my brother who live with me, will be going grocery shopping in January. I don’t have a lot of food and stuff but have a good amount of canned food on my shelf. I’m excited to show how much I can save. We had Chicken Thighs for $0.99 per lb. For this week. My brother went out and picked up 4 family packages. I have plenty of Ugly Chicken and beef products. Some people think I’m crazy to be getting things like 25lb bags of rice or beans and sugar & flour. I’m running short on room but will figure out how to get more items. If you happen to have an extra Freeze dryer, I would be glad to drive out to Michigan and pick it up all the way from Washington State, not the one in the east that is destroying this great nation! Just my thoughts tho! Thanks lots and God Bless you and Phil
