If you weren't a prepper before watching the 2009 film, the Road, you may become one afterwards. It's difficult to believe that anyone could watch such a thought provoking film without reflecting upon it's meaning afterwards. For those who have not yet seen it, it follows the journey of a man and his son surviving in a post-apocalyptic USA. What I particularly like is the absence of any real explanation for the end of the world. Something catostrophic occurred, but what? Does it really matter? When communications fail and the grid goes down, truth would be lost for most of us. Only the basics of life would matter: food, water, shelter, fire. All of these are points of focus in the film.

What I love about "The road" (both in a movie and a book) is that it shows the post-apocalyptic world as horrible, very depressing and hopeless, not some super adventure.

The movie was a truly chilling and realistic commentary on human nature. Some of the scenes are still in my head. Truly an intense film.

I love the Road, great book and movie. I think I have seen first hand what The Road was like. I was down at Port Bolivar shortly after hurricane Ike, there was no grass, lots of collapsed houses, the ones still standing where damp, and discolored, even the sky looked grey. We had to sleep with one eye open. One of our friends found a box with some canned spaghetti in it, they where still good. Someone even tried to steal my father's truck. I know that isn't quite an apocalypse but it felt like one for a while.

I think the 72 Hour figure for the grocery stores is flawed. We had a BIG windstorm here in 2007. The milk, bottled water, and batteries were gone in 90 minutes! Food shelves were emptied in FIVE HOURS! Power was out for 6 days. My wife & I heat with Kerosene, so we were covered there. We had candles, so there was light. We had a one-burner propane stove, so we could heat canned food. Where WE came up short was gasoline & water. That has now been corrected. We now have Solar & battery backup, As for your comment about being better off without guns in Canada----When China or N. Korea attack, WE are the FIRST people you'll be screaming at for help! While I am not a "Rambo" type in any way, and I personally wish we lived in a world where guns weren't needed, I am a realist. I'm not a huge lover of guns, and I ALWAYS prefer a peaceful resolution. Having said this however, if my wife or I are ever assaulted, I'm thankful that I have an equalizer. I don't love guns, but I'm NOT afraid to use one in self-defense.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am not sure how long the grocery stores would take to empty, but 72 hours is a number I've heard often. I agree it seems optimistic. The whole point to prepping is not to have to find out! As to China and North Korea attacking... They have never attacked Canada, nor do they have a reason to that I can see. USA has attacked Canada in the war of 1812. To me it seems far more likely that Canada will be attacked by again by America than China or North Korea. I love USA and believe they're an ally, but they are addicted to natural resources, and guess who has them (water, lumber, oil)? Thanks for watching!

Reading these comments now in 2021. Well, Canada has Chinese troops in Canada while the US in an economic war with China. The Chinese Communist Party has infiltrated the US government. There are 30,000 US troops in Washington DC and the US is on the brink of Civil War, possibly falling down and becoming Communist. Scary times. I wish Canadians were armed.

+Hans “Hanzy4200” S. I understand the sentiment, and there may be shortages, but I can't food and supplies simply ending. If I'm a farmer, and I know I can get two or three times the price for my wheat, I'm going to try to get it to market, even if my tractor's not working.
@thetobaccoguy1751
@thetobaccoguy1751 8 жыл бұрын
Alan Fox How will you harvest your wheat? In most SHTF situations, there will either be no petroleum products available, or the grid is fried and machinery won't work. No matter which, without a infrastructure to distribute it, it will sit in your silo. 95% of the nations food is grown where 8% of the country lives. In a grid down situation, thousands of acres of fruit, grain, and vegetables will rot while people starve 100 miles away. Same goes for meat. Without daily feed deliveries, pigs, steers, and chickens will be dying off in the millions. Our system is a intricate web. Every strand depending completely on the other, cut one and it's over.
@ApocGuy
@ApocGuy 8 жыл бұрын
Hans S. how he will harvest wheat? by hands :) . i do it every year.but its small field (80x30m), cant imagine how would anyone harvest wheat or corn or anything else from acres of land... I do agree on your post though.Being farmer today is whole different story that 200 years ago.without diesel or gas everything will stop sooner or later.And when that happens...all bets are off.Maybe storing cooking oil and make bio diesel? although not the best solution, still better than nothing.
@thetobaccoguy1751
@thetobaccoguy1751 8 жыл бұрын
ApocGuy Even bio diesel requires additives (for long term use). Harvesting by hand is absolutely a option. The problem is, that instead of harvesting 30 acres a day, you will be lucky to harvest a half acre a day. This means that essentially everyone would need to cultivate, grow, and harvest their own grain. This is feasible, as it was done for thousands of years, but it would take 5-10 years of trial and error for people to adapt. In that time, 90% of the country will already be dead.

The worst thing about the prepper movement are those survivalists who are the tactical weapons assholes. Those people who think they will be a post apocalyptic lone wolf Rambos who will defeat all with their weapons will be the first to be killed. The survivors will be those that try to avoid a fight - if they have to fight they will fight but only fight long enough to get away like seen in this movie. I am not against being armed - be armed but avoid combat. What if in the combat exchange you win but are wounded? What then? The first rule of martial arts is avoid a fight. Second rule is get away from the fight after the initial blows. Keep distance between you and the enemy.

+MarvelDcImage Soooooooo.....when you're surrounded by a mob of angry, ARMED thugs who will also survive, at least for a while, how are you going to create that distance you avow? A slingshot? Good luck, buddy.
@TexZenMaster
@TexZenMaster 8 жыл бұрын
+MarvelDcImage I think what he means is: Be prepared for a fight if one should arise. Against any mob, armed or unarmed, you stand a better chance of surviving if you own firearms and some sort of well-built shelter. Hiding is an option, but then, how much food/water/gear do you have remaining after you emerge from hiding? If your plan is to collect supplies after things go bad, you will likely not survive.
@hrdknox2000
@hrdknox2000 8 жыл бұрын
+TexZenMaster That's exactly right, Tex. People assume that if you are a prepper with a gun you are LOOKING for a fight. Not so, a gun is our last resort, but it can be the great equalizer when you are outnumbered. Even if you're outgunned too, you can create distance until you figure out a new plan or a new route to where you are going.
@Aaron565
@Aaron565 6 жыл бұрын
You made a good point but an incredibly naive one. Arms are long distance engagements. Its better to kill from afar detected than wait until they attack and flee undetected. There is a reason to patrol, establish a border, and enforce that boundary. Furthermore the risk reward of going out scavenging and starting fights outweighs the negatives. Unless you are well stocked with all possible supplies before something goes wrong, the longer you wait to scavenge the worse your situation gets. The movie's main point is that you should always have contingencies for the essentials. At least learn how to make your own supplies from scratch when needed. Learn how to repurpose things other people leave behind. Their one respite is the underground stocked bunker.

+Viking4freedom Although your comment is good for the short haul, it would be short-sighted in the event of a prolonged SHTF event. I will give you the benefit of the doubt that in your comment you would include training in the use of your "firearm" but even with that, ammo will become extremely scarce, if not completely run out, with _enough time_. The TV show "Revolution" illustrates this nicely with sword fighting becoming essential after 10yrs of no power. Or perhaps "The Walking Dead" Daryl character & his crossbow (arrows are reusable & can be handmade) Liberty = Peace & I pray you always enjoy both!

You can only carry so much ammo. I've got thousands of rifle rounds, an AK, a Fal, and an M4, as well as shotguns, but even taking my lightweight M4, I could only realistically take a few hundred rounds in that kind of scenario, if we're talking being on the move with other survival equipment.

I also live in Canada. It is actually pretty easy to get your firearm licence and purchase guns. I took a 2-days firearm safety course for both restricted and non-restricted firearm and submitted my application with the RCMP. After they conducted a reference check and criminal check, they issued me my licence. I now own a shotgun. I prefer long guns instead of pistols because it is a lot of hassels to own restricted firearm. Therefore, I recommend you to buy long guns once you get your licence and all you have to do when you purchase your long gun and ammo is to show the seller your licence to the gun shop. You can even buy ammo at both Walmart and Canadian Tire. I also recommend you to get the Benelli Supernova Tactical shotgun with 14" barrel and a collapsible stock. It is a very short barrel shotgun that this Italian manufacturer has designed for Canadian gun owners. In US, the minium barrel length is at least 19" or 18" if my memory serves me. If Canada ever suffers a societal collapse where there are no more law and order, I doubt we will need to worry about police coming after us for using our guns to defend ourselves. That being said, I still hope I will never have to use my firearm on a human being. If the people can riot and trash their own city over the loss of a hockey game, imagine what they are willing to do when they starve.

Bare minimum I would recommend that you get a shotgun. Pump action, you can get one with an 18 inch barrel or not, doesn't really matter. shotgun ammunition is easy to get, and cheap. A shotgun is very easy to learn how to use, and it doesn't turn heads like an AR15 or even a handgun.
@nerblebun
@nerblebun 10 жыл бұрын
Lose the pump shotgun, too many moving parts that can malfunction. A break open single shot H&R 12 gauge cost $150 and there's very little mechanical parts to fail. You can also buy adapters that allows you to shoot different calibers from the single shot H&R. Adapters won't work in a pump. You can get adapters for .22 caliber, 9mm, 45 APC, 38, 357 mag. My choice for a dependable SHTF situation is the .22 caliber adapter. Between any 12 gauge shells, slugs for big game, and a .22 caliber adapter, you can bring down any game in North America.
@warmongerel9743
@warmongerel9743 10 жыл бұрын
Grandpa the Grey With all due respect, I've had my Mossberg pump 12 gauge for 37 years and I have never had a failure. I'll take 5 more shots without reloading any day of the week. The adapters are a good idea if you have nothing else, but a shotgun, battle rifle and a handgun or two seem to make more sense. And, of course...ammo, ammo, ammo.

"Good" is a convenience that our society allows. If shit hit the fan your own neighbors who you talk to and get along with will kill you for food if it means survival. It is easy for people to say "I would never steal, I would never eat someone, I would never hurt anyone" etc, when you live in a society where you do not have to do any of those things to survive. If you look at Venezuela right now you have people killing each other for a bag of flour. These people never thought they would resort to such actions, but when your stomach is growling and your body is consuming itself - You shake off your reservations and do what you need to do to survive. Remember the movie "Alive"? It was about a south American soccer team who's plane went down in frozen mountain range. They were trapped there for weeks, and eventually ate the bodies of the people who did not survive the crash. It did not make them evil. It made them desperate. I have sponsored children in poor countries, have given my last dollar to a man who said he needed milk for his kids, I think stealing is repulsive, and I generally help people whenever I can..... but I have also been hungry. When you are hungry, the only thing that matters to you is eating, and the means to meet that end become inconsequential regardless of your moral, ideological, or religious beliefs. Your prey, and self-preservation drive over rules all of that, and you do what you have to do to eat. At the end of the day you can store 10,000 lbs of food, have a river running through your backyard, and have a lifetimes worth of firewood to keep you warm. But if you do not have a gun to protect those things, you are only prepping for the meanest guy on the block, who will not think twice about putting a bullet in you to take what you have. Guns are priority over all else, because without a gun it will only be a matter of time before you have nothing. Thoughts on the movie: The guy raised his child completely irresponsibly considering the environment they were living in. Listening to the father teach his son about morality instead of surviving made me sick. He was basically raising a lamb in a world full of starving lions. If you live in paradise, then you can afford to do that. If you are living in a "Hell on earth" type scenario you need to teach your child how to survive in that environment, and if some of those lessons lack morality, than leave it out of the lesson. Humans and animals alike first responsibility is to insure the survival of their offspring. A pride of lions, or a pack of wolves do not prey on the largest and strongest. They prey on the sick, the weak, and the young to survive....Why? Because this is what insures their own survival. If they cannot kill food, they do not eat. If they do not eat, they die. I am thankful that I live an environment that allows morality to flourish, and I do not have to lose sleep at night over the things I have done in the hours before, but I have no delusions of what life would be like if that environment was ripped out from under me, and will not waste time on morality knowing that it will be only a matter of days before morality itself ceases to exist. I am glad you are unarmed. Because without the sheep, the lions won't be able to eat. I would however encourage you to gain some weight because you're a little bit on the thin side. If you are going to allow yourself to be an easy meal, then at least do the people willing to eat you a service by making yourself worthwhile. Maybe you will inadvertently save a life down the road. Predators don't usually hunt on a full stomach =). You have entered the mind of someone who will roast you on a spit and eat your liver with Fava beans when shit hits the fan....... Wake up call......Go buy a gun you pussy =).

In my way of thinking, in order for "The Road" to make sense, whatever disaster happened, it was an extinction event. It just makes sense, animal life hunted to extinction or killed off, plant life killed off, mass cannibalism, mass human die off, it just adds up. In that case, survival will end in you being the last man standing, alone. My point is, "The Road" is not too realistic , from a prepping point of view. If the soil and water are unable to support life, the atmosphere will follow. After a major human die off, be that from pandemic,war,global climate changes, whatever, surviving only makes sense if the Earth is still habitable. If it is, rebuild. If not, death will be inevitable, no matter how much you prep.

A man would look at it as her giving up, but a woman would realize what she really did. She took herself out of the equation willingly because she knew there was not enough food and the chances of her son surviving under the fathers care increased with her out of the picture. I know some folks have already stated this but it bears repeating. The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States has absolutely ZERO to do with hunting, or even defense from criminals (although those are secondary benefits obviously). It is there for one reason and ONE reason only, that the American People may resist a tyrannical government. As to those who say that the presence of guns or gun laws have no affect on crime, you are naive to the point of being dangerous. To those who side with the gun grabbers, I point out this to you. You are siding with the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Mao. Let that sink in for just a minute. You are siding with the 3 greatest mass murderers in history. Also I will point out to you a very simple axiom, It's better to have (a gun) and not need, than need (a gun) and not have. I agree that gun control laws have no effect on a certain class of individual, the problem is that those not affected are the CRIMINALS, as criminals do NOT obey the law, hence why they are called CRIMINALS. Gang bangers, thugs and dirtys are going to get guns one way or the other. Gun control laws only affect those who are inclined to obey the law to begin with. This is basic logic, and beyond reproach. Liberal double think is illogical and dangerous in the real world where when seconds count, the cops are minutes away. In 8 years as a police officer I have yet to deal with a serious assault on a licensed concealed carry permit holder. Further, CCW holders commit so FEW crimes that they are almost negligible in relation to the rest of society. And before anyone talks to me about the two in Florida or the one in Texas lets look at the numbers. Two in Florida (2) out of a million CCW holders. One in Texas out of a million more. Get it through your heads. It is the same people committing the vast majority of the crime. 10% of the population committing a little over 80% of the crime. Want to talk about the murder rate in the States? Sure. Anyone want to guess how many of those killed by firearms each year are involved in illegal activity at the time of their death? Anyone want to take a swipe at the percentage of felons who are killed by other felons? Felons in the commission of a crime that are killed by either law enforcement or lawfully armed citizens? I saw a stat that 194 children had been murdered by gun related violence after that Newton shootings. Horrible! Right? Well lets look at who those "children" include; gang members under the age of 25. 25, really? The same under 25 year old's who are shot in the commission of a crime. I mean please. You have to tweak your stats in order to try and add a shock value? Then you wonder why those of us who actually study what is going on dismiss your "facts". I personally know people who are alive today because they were ARMED. Women who were NOT raped because they were armed. People who were not brutalized because they were ARMED. I have also worked some cases where maybe the person would not have been murdered, raped or brutalized if they had been armed. Sorry about the rant. But reading some of these comments about guns not preventing violence boggles the mind. My own personal story, prior to being a police officer and was still active duty Navy. My then wife was NOT sexually assaulted by a bunch of thugs because I had a 1911 pistol lawfully carried inside the waistband. They made many derogatory and sexual comments to my wife about what they were going to do to her after they dealt with me. I ignored them, handed the wife the car keys and told her to get in and start the car. One shouted "Hey I'm talking to you mother fucker". I looked at him and gave him a slight shake of the head. This POS of course took my unwillingness to engage them as weakness, as all jackals do. He and some of his his fellow POS's then decided to advance on us, and we were still approx 20 yards away from the car. I am NOT running, and emboldening their wanna be gangster bullshit, further I am NOT turning my back on a foe, you are a fool if you do. I told the wife to run to the car, cleared my shirt away from my piece, drew my weapon, swiped off the safety, and WAS going to tell them to stop or I'd shoot every damn one of them (or something to that affect). But before I could utter one syllable to them they had done a 180 and were shagging ass back to their cars. So from personal experience, my wife was NOT raped and brutalized, or God forbid murdered. I don't have to live with the shame and hate of not being able to protect my wife, and am a sane, stable and productive member of society. I will close with this. We will not give up our weapons, ever. There will be war if you try. It's as simple as that. And if this all does go down the tube, criminals attack the softest target just like energy takes the path of least resistance. IF, and please I hope it never does, something like The Road were to happen. You had better find some steel in your persona, and be able to lay aside the nice parts of yourself. Imagine this; you laying there bound and gagged while someone raped and brutalized your children, and knowing that at the end they would be murdered and you FAILED to protect them. Let that roll around in your head for a bit. The only way you hurt my kids is if I am dead first. So endeth the rant! Gunner Out!

@Patrick Ilmoni, I see why from a societal perspective void of privately owned firearms, America would seem weird or strange for having that kind of freedom. I will emphasize a few things to hopefully shed some light on the other side of the coin as it were. First, inanimate objects are not inherently evil. People are what operate firearms for bad or for good, violence or self defense. Secondly, firearms give the general citizenry the ability to resist tyranny inherent in any system of government *without even firing a shot* Conservative estimates would say at least 100,000,000 Americans are armed in this country. This somewhat restricts political abuse of power. It also has the added benefit of the national security "rifle behind every blade of grass" concept. If guns didn't exist, if knives didn't exist, if swords, spears, hammers, screwdrivers, and nail guns didn't exist, people would just start picking up rocks.. This is the nature of the world we live in. Technology will eventually produce a *non-lethal* and *more effective* fight stopper than bullets, but unfortunately it doesn't exist as of yet.

If it came to cannibalism, I do not know if I would want to be a survivor. Do you remember the scene in the movie where the father showed his young son to shoot himself in the head? When the Foreign Legion fought in Morocco and Algeria in the '20s, they would told to save one bullet for themselves as opposed to being captured and tortured. I have been prepping since the mid-90's, spending a considerable sum of money on my endeavor, after having gone through hurricane Rita in 2005 where my retreat is in rural East Texas. We were out of power for over 2 weeks. Fortunately I had a couple of generators, fuel, water and other items but felt like I was living on a subsistence level compared to what things were like before the hurricane. In a situation like "The Road," I could probably make it comfortably for about 90 to 120 days. After that, things would become increasingly problematic.

I can survive on my own and have advanced OLS and medical training as well as years of experience, but after watching this movie in 2009, I started really thinking about how I would provide food, shelter and defense for my own kids. I started picking up bushcraft and more advanced trapping skills, pharmacology, and disaster relief methodologies. If you're motivated enough in you and your family surviving, the ultimate survival tool is eachother. First show little skills to your family on a camping trip, like building a fire and a few helpful knots, then just introduce a little at a time. But if you do not secure a firearm, the next best thing is to gather a network of a few family members, friends, or people in the neighborhood and introduce the idea slowly. Build up a network consisting of initial communication, meeting place, and a quick checklist for supplies. In the absence of firearms, your defense is building up the number of loyal and reliable, like-minded and capable allies: strength in numbers. Chances are that someone will be great at things you are not good at. A small to medium group with a common goal, planning, and leadership has more of a chance of surviving than a few individuals with AKs. WROL situations are easier to deal with when your group has anticipated, planned, and learned needed skills for survival. And as a general rule, life will be easier if a responsible armed friend is in your group, but ALWAYS include a medic in your allies list. You could survive without a firearm, but chances are that sickness and disease will be the undoing if no medic is around to help.

The implied disaster in The Road is a nuclear war: there's a bright flash in the distance when the man and his wife are sleeping and then the power goes out = EMP (electromagnetic pulse). Then eventually all the animals and plants die due to nuclear winter (clouds of radioactive dust in the sky blocking solar radiation so that plants can't grow), hence the cold and lack of food. That aside, your talking points are all good and well thought out, although I would recommend that you buy a rifle and learn how to use it. There are any variety of bolt and lever action guns in Canada, and the SKS rifle is a good inexpensive semiautomatic option if you choose to go that route. In a WROL situation, it will help you to defend yourself in the absence of law enforcement, and be an aid to hunting. In normal life, mastering the art of the rifle can be a very satisfying and fulfilling hobby, even if you never shoot anything more dangerous than a paper target at a rifle range.

simonferrer There is no sign of nuclear fallout nor people suffering from the sickness derived from it. A better cause would be a meteor strike somewhere extremely dense in vegetation like a forest. If a 5m meteor can cause a 50 kilo ton TNT explosion, then it was obvious that atleast a kilometre-wide meteor had hit earth in the road movie. They have enough momentum to eject tons of mass from the lithosphere into the atmosphere. This would heat up earth in the upper atmosphere, but block any incoming radiation from hitting the grounds.

I think what you said about seeds at the start is what was missing from that movie. the one of the most important pieces of human social evolution was farming. it bought people together in teams and established rules for things like trade and distribution. I understand that all the plants were wiped out and they were still in some kind of nuclear winter, but they had some light and water, many crops could have been grown if people had stuck together. I'm sure the point of the movie was to show the worst of humanity vs regular people, rather than the worst of humanity vs the best of humanity. the best of humanity are the builders, not the hunters... when SHTF, you need the skills to build crops, shelters and defences. those people turned to cannibalism because they had no skills, and thought they could hunt their way to survival but all the hunting was taken away so instead of thinking about some other strategy they just found a different prey. I'm glad i watched this movie and agree with you that SKILLS are required not just weapons.

Prepping means nothing if you cant protect your family, yourself and your supplies. Very naive to point out the only thing between the father and sons death, which is literally 10 min into the movie, is a firearm and then go on to say it is "to be determined" whether you will own one or not. You need to own one now, you cant just go run out and buy one when you need it. It is the same mindset as prepping for food, shelter, whatever (72 hours grocery stores empty) . Protection is something that you must acquire before the fact.

It's a fallacy that Canadians don't have firearms. If you live in the city, it's easy to believe that nobody owns guns. But having lived in Canadian cities, suburbs, and rural areas, I conclude that the further you get out of the city, the more people own firearms. Rifles are not required to be registered in Canada. An RCMP officer friend, working in one rural area, once told me that "everyone here has firearms." So in a crisis, where food and other supplies run out, city dwellers may flood into the country in search of a meal, only to encounter plenty of heavily armed rural communities who are unwilling to welcome outsiders.

The movie covers a period of about 8 years. Conception to delivery and 7 year old on the road with dad. Very thought provoking, very, very realistic. This is why prepping is important. The event happened when the wife is just barely showing, the man ran to tub and started collecting water asap. Their beans did not run out until she went into labor. He was a prepper, maybe not to an extreme but to a degree. Watch this movie, read the book. Get ready this is what life will be like after a Nuke, or Asteroid, major super volcano, etc. All it took for this man to keep his family alive for 8 or 9 years after shtf was to be ready for it to hit. FYI he used that gun a lot! "We should have done it while we had more."

I really liked the movie The Road. I think a lot of people picture a SHTF scenario as a 'fun weekend camping trip;' and don't realize the heartache and famine and disease that could possibly come along with the collapse of society. As far as firearms - even if every gun in the US was destroyed, I would still want one because they become the 'equalizer' when you face someone who has a blunt force weapon such as a baseball bat, a knife, or multiple attackers. The US would be a lot better place if the judicial system would actually start holding criminals responsible who use firearms illegally. As a LEO, I see all too often when criminals aren't given any real jail time for their gun offenses. Criminals in the US just aren't afraid to commit crimes with guns, as they know they will not be held responsible. Anyways, I liked the part where you spoke about living off the land more. I've got my food preps, I've got my ammo preps, and I recently got accepted into a group retreat near a small town away from my major city. But the next prep I need to start working on is renewing my food.

I don't know if everything will be as bad as many preppers picture it. See, I'm from Germany and my grandmother sometimes tells me about the years from 1943 to about 1948 when stuff didn't go so well for the Nazis (thankfully). In the countryside they had barely anything to eat in those years but people didn't start to steal from each other. They helped each other out. If a farmer had food to share he shared it. In return he maybe got a candle or something. The kids were sent into the woods to gather fruit, roots and acorn and people in the villages took care of each other. Obviously nowadays, we don't share the standard of moral values (believe it or not, but even during the Nazi-reign the common people did have moral values, even though they were on the evil side) and we depend more on modern technologies like electricity (which was not available in the countrysides back then), refrigerators, supermarkets etc. and our knowledge about growing and gathering food is a lot less than it used to be, but we are still the same people, aren't we? So maybe while shit will definitely go down in the big cities the communities in smaller villages will remain working and people will help each other out to get through the hard times instead of stealing from and killing each other.

The one thing that The Road showed which probably isn't super likely to happen is the idea that a bunch of people would survive the unnamed "event", but that no plant life did. It seems even more unlikely that people were then eating each other (it takes more food to grow meat on a human, than you get meat in the end, so it makes no sense to keep a human "farm" like was shown in the film, if you're trying to stay alive). All in all, though, salient points.

Honestly, the "not really sure what happened, but something happened" slant was one of the things I most liked about the movie... I think, when it does happen, it will be like that for most of us... the news services will not last long enough to provide any answers, and with all the surviving going on, who would even have time to follow it if it did? Unless you're a scientist who was already well informed about whatever, most of us will just know "something big happened, and here we are". Overall, I enjoy the movie a great deal, it's an eye-opener, and well acted, IMO. (edit) What you said about health is so true... for all the prepping videos I see, that is the one that is least recognized. It doesn't matter what tactical gear you have laid aside, how much food and water and guns and bug-out bags and all, your body is your highest-priority gear of all, none of it helps you if that one is not ready to endure survival.

+StartUpSurvival Excellent point about the current behavior of the US govt foreign policy! As for the origins of the 2 countries I obviously agree because that's history, but we all can see that that does not provide a response to the 2nd Amendment issue I was discussing. Honestly I don't even know how to answer the question of why Canadian "Sheople" seem to be pacifist-like & lack the foresight that their own govt may someday turn against them. (I submit that it's already begun) Again, I really liked your video analysis of this movie. On a personal note: 0:28 You said you are not prepping for any particular disaster. I wouldn't cut yourself short because most people aren't prepare for anything at all & being prepared for NO POWER is a great foundation for every other level of prepping. As you continue to expand your survivability time to longer periods you will eventually be prepared for every form of disaster. EXAMPLE: Increasing your preps from a simple power outage of 3 days to 3 weeks without power will obviously lead you to being prepared for, as you said, "God knows what" so long as you continue to increase your preps & knowledge. +VAALSKAALUUMS My country descends directly from the Commonwealth of Great Britain which pretty much dominated the entire world for hundreds of years. You guys splintered off through war, and we did it through diplomacy. Also, Canada has been smart enough to control and preserve their resources unlike you guys. I have no doubt US sees Canada as a golden goose, and will probably try to take our resources in the future. FYI I do own 2 firearms now, and feel fairly well equipped at this point. That being said, I stand by my comments in this video. I am happy we don't have the same level of mass shootings you guys do.

+VAALSKAALUUMS Anything is possible. It's sometimes difficult to distinguish between cause and effect. Ex) government gets tougher on gun laws because of # of mass shootings. But maybe the # of mass shootings is staged in order to justify changing the laws and thus disarm the population. That being said, I believe a far more likely explanation is: a) too easy access to firearms b) increasing mental illness in Western society. I don't want to justify mass shootings by any means, but when I look around I see the average person being squeezed economically, with a declining standard of living in the western world. US consumes more drugs (prescription/narcotics) per capita probably than any other country I can think of. Combine all those things with ready access to force multiplying weapons, and you see the result. I know why gun people cling to the 2nd amendment, but we're living in a new age and the variables have changed significantly. There is no war on US soil, people live mostly in cities now vs rural in the past, mental illness is up, no one hunts anymore etc etc. We'll see what happens. Thanks for commenting dude :)

One of the most interesting and gruesome aspects of canabolism in that movie was the slow consumption of living victims using tourniquets. I never thought of how the lack of refrigeration would factor in such a scenario. With no salt, refrigeration, or smoke house for meats you would have to either consume the dead whole within a few hours or allow them to live after amputating their limbs one by one. Cooking and making jerky would be the only other option I can think of. There seemed to be a part in the movie where the mother was trying to talk the husband into giving up the son who was still a baby. I assume trading him in as food for some favor. Truly a very disturbing movie. Since there was no mention of war or radiation, cometary or asteroidal impact was the most likely cause of the disaster.

It is a good movie, it just has sort of a depressing tone to it. But I think its one of the most realistic post-apocalyptic movies out there. And I like all of your points on survival, with the will to live being your base platform. I know you will be wishing you had some firearms in a situation like this - most people where I live in the U.S. South own firearms and are somewhat familiar with hunting. Like you said, the revolver in the movie was paramount. The Road I think depicted what happens to the big city dwellers after an apocalypse situation and once they exhausted their resources they band together and go out hunting en mass. So us country folks will have our canned goods, guns ammo, and have a very simple way of thinking :)

5 years later (sorry for late reply), but I disagree with this. In survival priorities, water, shelter, food are all more important than 'gun.' Gun is a tool, which is very useful, but it's no the be all end all. For me The Road main lesson in practical terms is that to maintain life you need a shit load of stuff. Even if you have some stuff you will need a way to move it, hence the most valuable tool in the movie is a shopping cart. Water, tools, guns and especially ammo in sufficient quantities is very very heavy. A elite soldier being sent into combat without support for a week often carries up to 200 lbs in kit and supplies.

Lord Typhus I never said I was anti-gun. All I said is I prefer the gun situation in Canada to the US. We have guns in Canada with higher regulation, and far fewer deaths per capita. If we go through the proper training, and background check, we can acquire guns. In the US, psychos regularly acquire guns and use them to kill crowds of innocent people. Sorry, but that doesn't sound superior to me. Regulation can be a good thing.
@Creepermoss
@Creepermoss 10 жыл бұрын
StartUpSurvival Those places you speak of, are targets for these types BECAUSE of gun regulation. A gun free zone is preferred by spree killers, as they only become mass shootings due to the lack of any effective resistance. You'll notice, they attack schools instead of NRA meetings? The areas of the US with the highest volume of gun related murders are also the ones with the highest amount of regulation. Gun "control" laws disarm the people that own firearms legally, they mean nothing to a person that does not follow the law to begin with. In fact, Chicago just turned in their lowest murder rates in over 50 years, and the Police Chief attributes that drop to recent de-regulation. They passed a law allowing citizens to carry a concealed gun legally, and it literally cut the gun crime in half. Because they know they are no longer the only ones that are armed.

Loved the movie. Watched it twice. I think its a great representation of what would happen if something happened and brought the grid down globally or at least enough where other countries couldn't lend a hand. Depressing but the ending is awesome. The family at the end is who had the dog when they were in the bunker. Their boy is the boy his son saw when the man was at his old house. It was pretty cool how they buttoned up the ending. It wasnt just a boy with a gun on his own. They brought it all together at the end. A great movie! Its on Netflix if someone wants to see it. I'd be fucked if the SHTF. I have a Medtronics Drug infusion pump inside of my body (also known as an internal morphine pump though it can have anything in it) pumping morphine and 2 other medications directly to my spinal canal. It has to be refilled every 3 weeks or taken out. It cannot run dry or its deadly super quickly. The medications are shipped from a compounding pharmacy directly to my pain dr who then refills the pump with a needle under an xray (to be able to direct the needle into the hole. Its 100% internal and nothing is outside of my body). If SHTF, its not like stopping pain meds, go through withdrawl for a week, and just be in pain (or for me, not be able to walk at all which would be deadly all by itself). Its not like I could break into a pharmacy. This shit is specially made. Its liquid. I maybe able to get liquid morphine from a hospital but how would I be able to get it into the pump? And even then, the internal battery only lasts 10 yrs (from when it was placed in me: Nov 2015). If the grid is not up by 2025 the pump fails anyway. So, I'm fucked either way. Unless I could find all medications in correct amounts and learn how to get it in there, im fucked. If the grid doesn't come up in 3 weeks. Depressing. And it makes you ask yourself why prep. But then, I live in Florida. Was caught very unprepared for hurricane Irma. I thought I was prepared enough but had no clue the power would go down for a week as she hit here in Orlando at about a Cat 3. Not a bad hurricane for us at all. Thought maybe a day or two and so thats what i prepared for. Nothing like what happened. It taught me a lot though and so I prep for that. Hurricanes and different things that happen every year. And they are indeed getting worse. The storms and natural things like that. Irma was almost a super storm. Never seen such a tight hurricane before. It had us all worried. And huge too. If she went the path she was supposed to even us far inland of Orlando would of had to bug out. Anyway, end of the world is the end of me. But the most likely thing is short term so thats what I prep for. The short term. No reason for me to prep for 10 yrs worrh of food as I wouldn't last that long anyway if SHTF and we had WOL.

Superb film. Very dark. I'm writing this from England - supposedly civilised, but three years ago we had (by your standards) a mild snowfall. The local shops couldn't get resupplied and the road conditions limited traffic to only 4x4's. My local shop was almost emptied but what was scary was the air of panic that was present - women snatching at food they probably didn't need and guys acting as if they would kill for it. ...and yet in the scale of things it wasn't even an emergency. It just goes to show how brittle our civilisation is and how selfish and vicious many people would be. Frankly I've always been a prepper - just didn't know it; my lifestyle of shooting/fishing/camping/trekking and common sense added up to it. A year ago I hadn't even heard of prepping. I have a 4x4, gun, supplies, alternative energy sources, security etc. Nothing crazy but a combination of hobbies and common sense preparations added up.

MarcusCism The reason we had a revolutionary War was because the Government at the time the British tried to disarm the People and to prevent any future Government from trying to take this God given right it was protected in the Constitution. That is from the Men that penned it. The right to self defense is a Common law right and was Common when the Constitution was written so they didn't think it would ever be under threat and did not warrant protecting. We were never meant to have a standing Army that way to make war the Government had to come to the people for the Militia.

MarcusCism Listen I have studied this for a long time. I know what I am talking about. Article 2 sec 2 only grants that title to the president when war has been declared that is when a regular Army is to be called up and trained. That is why it says in Article 1 sec 8 clause 11&12 " To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water; To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;" No more than two years for regular army and they are listed in order of importance in clause 11 "Declare war" Clause 12 "Raise and support Armies" After these two thing happen is when that Title of Commander and Chief is conveyed to the President. This is how the Founders meant for the Constitution to work, it does not work like this any more since we have a permanent standing Army thanks to Lincoln. Plus Congress passing unconstitutional laws " the war powers act" etc...

What is the purpose of the Military Academy ? To train the officers of the future not to train an army and that is what is stated in the founding documents of it. The moved showed a very clear example of the three types of people in the world. Sheep, sheepdogs and wolves. The two main characters are sheep. They were unwilling, perhaps rightly so, to fall into the trap of killing for food. While they didn't look for others to take care of them, they were content to let things happen around them as long as it did not interfere with their plans. The cannibals were obviously the wolves. And you can look at government in the same way because every single politician, no matter what they say while running for office, has one goal in mind once they attain that office: survival. They will look after themselves before they look after you. That's what the cannibals did in The Road. Then there are the sheepdogs. You know who sheepdogs are? Preppers. Many many civilian militias. Families. People don't believe in the 2nd Amendment because they want to start a war. I am a Canadian who absolutely believes in the 2nd Amendment.... it's to protect ourselves and others from wolves. Once the government starts to crumble, sheep are in trouble. I'm not going to die for someone who refuses to help himself, but I'm not going to let people get eaten by wolves, either. There is a line you just don't cross... and that's what the 2nd Amendment is for. Tyranny in all it's forms.

Okay, you asked for comments so, here you go (sorry in advance for the wall of text) I went and watched the movie, then came back and watched your video. Here are my thoughts: 1) right out the gate, did you even FINISH 2012? They don't try to escape into space (although they REALLY try and make it sound like that's what they're trying to do). They're boats...just like Noah, because all the natural disasters culminate into a flood that just about covers the entire earth. 2) I like your thoughts on the bullet points but we need to point something out: In the movie, when SHTF, his wife was still pregnant. They didn't leave until he was already, what? between 8 and 10? If you notice when her water breaks, they have LOTS of food/water and, I'm guessing here, ammo. It is, while traveling, that they only have the two rounds left, and those are reserved for them to commit suicide. 3) I like what you said about the value system portion of the movie. To be honest, I think that is the key point to the movie (and something that the father starts to lose - as we see with the, not trying to kick up any racial remarks, but we never get the guy's name, black man who steals their stuff). Where I might differ is in the interpretation of the "fire" they are carrying. I'm not so sure that it is their value system as it is simply the will to survive. True, there could be a little more to that in that they are surviving without giving up their humanity. One thing that made me really sit back and think about is protection/hunting. As we see in the movie, ammunition seems to be pretty scarce (almost to an unrealistic point, given where in the country they are). Made me think that Bows and Crossbows are almost a necessity. Now, that being said, we can't forget that Bows take a LOT of practice. So much more than do firearms. But, especially after having watched the movie, it almost seems worth it. While hunting, if you retrieve your arrows, you can re-use your "ammo" over and over again. Not only that, you could probably make your own. To me, I'd probably use my bullets first, then fall back to a box/crossbow. Anyways, thank you for pointing this out, as I wouldn't have known about the movie otherwise. Again, I think you make some awesome points.

Regarding your stance on the legality of guns, you like the current system, but the current system is designed for a best case scenario. What happens when you run into a worst case scenario? That's essence of prepping ... preparing and being ready for the worst case scenario. In a worst case scenario, you are going to need a gun because there will always be someone bigger and stronger than you, or a group that is bigger than your group. Having a gun will either level the playing field, or give you an advantage that can save your life.

StartUpSurvival What's good about gun ownership is how quickly the misconceptions about them go out the window. The fear, the ignorance, the agenda... all of it will fade away and be replaced with empowerment, knowledge and respect. Not to mention knowing you are no longer a helpless bystander at the mercy of someone else if something bad happens; you can defend yourself. Once people get into it and learn about firearms, they'll understand it's a hunk of metal, a tool that can't do anything without several critical procedures being followed by a human being with a brain. As long as you're intelligent enough to operate a motor vehicle without plowing into a group of people on the side of the road, you're intelligent enough to own and operate a firearm. Oh, and I almost forgot the best part: the enjoyment of shooting and getting good at it.

When you get right down to it, humans are a co-dependent species. The worst possible punishment you can get in prison is solitary confinement. Just think about that for a minute, even when everyone around you is a total scumbag criminal, you'd rather be with them than be alone. We crave company, and we will make concession to keep company with as many people as possible for our own survival.

Very well put. Also, there's loads of countries out there that can be looked at as examples. It seems that folks go tribal and just as you said, they form their own community's and become totally self governing. Thanks for your insight and optimism..... good to see now days!

I agree but disagree at the same time. A lot of people out there have very small groups of friends, and then there are the loner types. I think there are more than ever, because people are getting more and more fed up with the way society is today. Lots of people are moving out of the city and into rural areas to live a clean, comfortable, natural and quiet life. So, like I said, agree and disagree. If this goes down, my local rural neighborhood/community will establish itself as a sovereign entity, and I'm sure many others will. That is, if this isn't a war or NWO extermination event... then it's pretty much small groups of friends and family in their homes, which would suck.

Yep, eating human flesh has its cons. Transmiting diseases and parasites. But IMO postapo you will have bigger chance of dying from starvation then some disease you get from eating humans.

Mate I understand your good intentions in doing this vid but mate even in this day and age you have no idea!!! I spent 11 years in the Royal marines and have seen people kill for a cup of "clean" water I have seen in west africa a woman given a pistol with one round and then have her child set on fire and given the choice ending her childs life/suffering or her pending hell just for fun by some sick minded reb's and you think people will fight over a tin of food that hell that life for some is now!!!! Tell me if you were that woman what would you do. If that came down to a scrap of food for your childs life or another ( god forbid it ever happens I don't wish it on anyone after what I've seen) what would you do its not the survivalist mind that wins through I I know I tought it for long enough its the one that can be the animal inside that wins through being an animal will help you I don't mean eating human flesh but the will to survive and the animal inside are the same I don't give a toss what trolls think of my comment I know what I have seen and dealt with its hard it happens and well I will shut up now sorry.

Zyzyzx Zyzer We are animals. We've fooled ourselves into thinking we're not, but, by all scientific definitions, we are animals. Further than that, your cerebellum (mammalian instinct) has the ability to over-ride your cerebrum (your reasoning). This is why women can lift 500lb. objects off their children. It's also why murders of passion exist. Some men and women react very emotionally to being dumped, cheating on or having their offspring fucked with. It's not about logic at that point. It's about primate instinct. Simon Smith This is why I have dual razor-wire fences set into anti-tank barricades. To invade my property, someone has to make a fuck lot of noise. The final rule of law is physics, not 'reason'. Reason is a luxury.

Zyzyzx Zyzer I use 'monkey brain' colloquially. We're actually not from monkeys, but from apes. While it has taken roughly 8 million years to go from there to here, we're still not really all that evolved (imo). The mammalian brain does hijack reason. Hell, I've had it happen to me. Note that I'm not talking about adrenaline, but something else. When a person is under extreme emotional pressure, it shuts down reason and the result is not always adrenaline response, but it is always a shut down of 'reason'. We are not plants. We are not fungus. We are animals. We're made up of colonies of bacteria and living cells, just like any other animal. 'Civilization' is simply an advanced form of tribalism. Federal tribe, state tribe, corporate tribe, family and friends tribe.

The reason why the couple at the end survived, is because the couple works together, they're young (and fit), the guy appears well armed...with shotgun ammo across his chest.

I just re-watched the movie a few days ago. Worst movie I ever watched when my youngest was just born. Ugh. I wanted to see how it still held up now that I am finally actively prepping. I found the situation with the couple at the end to be more open-ended. There was no real indication that the other 2 kids with them were theirs and the look on the kids' faces didn't look happy. What if the kids were their captives? It was strange that the guy has more firepower and did not overtake them at an earlier timeframe, but maybe they were watching and hanging around long enough that they knew the dad was ready to die. They knew they could gain trust in the kid to eventually rope him in for their own nefarious reasons. He was certainly young and hopeful enough. Maybe they liked the dog way more than the kids and they were using / going to use the kids to keep that thing and themselves fed. Some people are like that. Otherwise, why not eat the dog that late into this apocalypse disaster? I can't remember how I felt about the end the first time I watched it, but the second time definitely felt off.

I am an absolute huge fan of the show, but honestly I have to disagree a little bit. Not the whole way, but most of it. The show consists of a basic survival aspect which has very fortunate rescues for the main characters very close demises. The world has gone to hell, people are showing their true colors and killing, its kill or be killed, blah blah. However, the characters on the show find an incredible amount of things like firearms and food, which in reality would be dangerously scarce. I mean it doesn't take long for the main characters to find enough food to feed a whole community or enough guns to arm a militia. I think the show is very very good and does provide a good concept of what the afterworld may be, but I wouldn't count on a replica of the show when SHTF.

Atomic Bombs I think Season 1- 4 of TWD would give us an idea of what a more realistic depiction of a SHTF scenario would look like. I think if it were to happen it would be like an I Am Legend/TWD type of scenario.

Enjoyed your review - my video is in production which draws helpful hints from the rest of the "Doomsday" movies. BTW do you make a decent amount of monetization from the 5 second intro commercial or would you recommend the full 15 second that does not allow click-thru?
