I learned something about Buchanan from this video. Such a lovely little park, too. Thanks for taking us there. My advice on the monuments: visit and share whichever ones interest you. There certainly are such a large number of places in DC and that area of our nation, so I'm sure you won't run out of them.

Thanks! I actually enjoy all of these "lesser known" monuments and statues, but I can see where the channel needs some other stuff as well to keep it interesting. Winter is always a tough time to video, but I think we got some different stuff coming up soon.

Hi Paul, Looking forward to seeing this park in the better weather it looks absolutely beautiful! The Buchanan memorial is quite impressive. The statue is nice but it really is the setting that makes it all the more impressive. It's hard to believe this is in the centre of Washington in some ways as it looks like quite a big park. How are you and Bev doing? I hope her shingles haven't been giving her any more troubles and that you are both well 😊

Hey Annie! Good to hear from you. Yes this is a really big park. I think it's on the order of 17 acres! We're doing okay, thanks. Both suffer from some aches and pains occasionally, but that's the reward of living a full life. :-)

For an unpopular President, he does have a couple of statues of him.

If Buchanan was so unpopular, why do they have a statue of him?

This is a reasonable question, and I can only speculate. The money was donated by Buchanan's niece, so the expense is at least explained. The actual debate over the work itself actually went on in Congress for something on the order of 15 years, and when the unveiling ceremony took place, it was not open to the public (weird). After the whole debacle with the Temperance Fountain, DC by this time had a Fine Arts Council, but they approved the work, and I suspect that approval was based more on its artistic aesthetics of the proposed work than on the politics or acts of Buchanan himself, but again that is my personal speculation.

Thanks! It seems there is an almost limitless supply to statues in DC. They're all really nice, and I am glad we are getting to visit and see them all, but I think I need a break for a little while. Fortunately we are heading out of town for a couple of days, and maybe we can get something different for the channel.

I've always wondered why they used what appears to be the letter V in place of the letter U. Especially when I rode a train that stopped at the station in ALBVQVERQVE, NM. Try and say that as it looks!

I noticed this myself, but I have no explanation for it. It's something I am going to have to research or it will drive me crazy. Thanks.

Matt, turns out the U versus V is a throwback to Latin. "There was the sound for the letter we call U, but it didn’t look like U. It looked like V. The Classical Latin alphabet had only 23 letters, not the 26 that we have today." "First, in the 1500s, Italian printers started distinguishing between the vowel U and the consonant V. However, the V continued to be used for the U sound at the beginning of words. In 1629, the capital U became an accepted letter when Lazare Zetzner, a printer, started using it in his print shop." And, according to another source, ". . . the letter U didn't actually come into wide-spread use in English until the 18th century."
