I look at it differently. I think that Pope John Paul II was content to give President Reagan this special moment with the American students there. I think the Pope was impressed by the love being shown to the President and Mrs. Reagan. The students were very happy and showed it when Mr. Reagan mentioned his hopes that Pope John Paul would again visit the US. A present so-called leader would no doubt have his nose bent out of shape if he wasn't accorded full attention and devotion, but not these two great men. No upstaging took place here, in my humble opinion.
