The PreSonus Studio 1824c is an 18in X 18out (or 20out depending on how you like to count the outputs), USB C audio interface. 24 bit and up to 192k for your sample rate.
It has 2 Mic/Instrument/Line combo inputs on the front, and 6 Mic/Line combo inputs on the back. The XMAX Pre-Amps have an 80dB gain range and +65dB of gain, so these pre-amps can drive low output broadcast microphones without an external pre-amp. The XMAX Pre-amps are also very quiet and clean.
There are 8 DC coupled TRS outputs and 2 Main Outputs. 2 headphone outputs, MIDI I/O, SPDIF, ADAT, and Word Clock.
The Studio 1824c has a MUTE button to mute the mains, and a MONO button to collapse the signal to mono, which is useful to check for phase problems in your mix.
This interface also currently includes the Studio Magic plugin bundle and Studio One 4 Artist edition.
Also included is Universal Control, which is your driver software, and UC Surface which let's you setup different no/low latency monitor mixes.
While this interface is USB-C, it uses the USB 2.0 protocol. As mentioned in the video, there is no issue with this since USB 3 doesn't actually reduce latency. You can, however, plug the 1824c into USB 2 or USB 3 ports on your computer.
▶For more info on USB2 vs USB3 for audio interfaces, read this:
support.focusr...
When you turn Phantom Power (48v) ON for the XLR inputs, it's on for ALL mic inputs. While it would be nice if you could turn Phantom Power ON per channel, it usually won't be an issue. If you're connecting condenser microphones that use phantom power and dynamic microphones that do not use phantom power at the same time, most dynamic microphones will simply ignore the Phantom Power. A few vintage dynamic ribbon microphones could possibly be damaged, but in general it's just not an issue. Always look at the guide for your microphone to see if it will be damaged by Phantom Power.
▶Read this for more information about phantom power and dynamic mics:
www.soundonsou...
The PreSonus Studio 1824c is an audio interface with lots of I/O and routing options, low latency, amazing pre-amps, a good software bundle, and a nice price. After thoroughly testing this interface, I highly recommend it.

This is legit one of the best reviews I've seen for a device like this. What type of latency figures do you see with this? Also, if you use Loopback, you are limited to just channels 1-2?
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 5 жыл бұрын
I've never measured the latency but I have no problem with taking the buffer down to 128, 64, 32, or 16. I can play guitar with amp sims no problem. And you always have the direct monitor for no latency monitoring. Your exact latency will depend on your computer. I'm not sure what you mean by Loopback limited to channels 1-2 are you talking inputs or outputs? You can merge inputs 1/2 with the loopback stream or use Virtual. You will essentially have one stereo pair for the loopback. But that doesn't mean you can't stream multi-track audio to the Loopback. Here's a couple videos using the Loopback feature Loopback with Universal Control and PreSonus Audio Interface - In Depth kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdeBfZZ2l9C6Z4E.html PreSonus Universal Control Loopback - Record Computer/KZfaq Audio Into Your DAW kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9dmg82jyZzao6c.html PreSonus Universal Control Loopback - Record DAW ASIO Audio into OBS/Streamlabs kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJanf6ir3rDKXYk.html

@@BenoniStudio That is a very suspicious answer you are being asked what RTL you can see on this unit. This is 5 second measurement that anyone can do with many tools freely available. Presonus does not post RTL numbers for their interfaces for a reason, they are scamming people by selling the Green and Blue Z features as something new when it is just Asio 2.0 Direct Monitoring which has been available since 2003 at least!!. Adding DSP to mask this feature of ASIO 2.0 so they can hide their RTL times should be a call to see they are scamming people. RME does not hide their Asio 2.0 Direct Monitoring features, in fact they POST it. Asio 2.0 Hardware Direct Monitoring is what Presonus is using for their "Near Zero latency monitoring". It is a hardware and software combo feature that has been around for 17 years now, many companies are really scamming people with this. Since I don't scam people my Edirol Fa101 from 2005 is 6.89 ms RTL @ 96 khz and has been used for 15 years with ZERO issues.

An unfortunate drawback of this unit --and the Quantum series as well-- is that the front panel volume dial adjusts the "main" outs only-- that's Outs 1 and 2. The remaining analogue out must be adjusted in software. For those of us with 5.1 or in post, this would require an expensive monitor controller in-line to simply adjust volume to the speakers. Unless I'm missing something in the manual? Other brands do offer a selectable preference to link the main volume to all of the analogue outs. Would be nice.

Performance wise no difference really. Advantage of mixers is rather physical one. With mixers you can basically control each channel and record without use of software or computer and connect things like effect processors and EQs without loosing any of the outputs or inputs.

As far as recording, we specialize in producing acoustic singer songwriters in the folk and blues world. I am still figuring out the Universal Control routing options. I would like to take audio from my computer and route it back to my PC and out to my live internet radio show. I also have a Fader Port 8. It is a game changer and highly recommend it. Any suggestions on the routing of Universal Control as described? This video is terrific. Thanks very much!

I would choose the 1824c over the 2nd Gen Scarlett for sure. If you want to check out the 3rd gen Scarlett then you can decide what is better for you. The 3rd Gen added loopback and the AIR feature. But the Scarlett has a lower mic gain range than the 1824c. 56db vs 80db for the pre-amps which is important if you have gain hungry dynamic mics and you are not using a different mic pre-amp

Hello how to connect 2 1824c's together. using Universal Control 4.1 to get 16 channels Connect optical cable on main unit in to second unit out Connect optical cable on second unit in to man unit out I don't think you need both for just recording, but I use both Start computer with both 1824c's connected but turned off. with UC (Universal Control) running. Start your main 1824c. (note serial number in bottom right-hand corner) mine ends in (8). let light flash red, blue, red, blue. you can wait till the light settles on purple, but I never do. Set main 1824c to ADAT. Start your second 1824c. (note serial number in bottom right-hand corner) this one ends in (4). Both lights should flash for a second then turn blue. Set second 1824c to Internal {I use the serial numbers to keep track of which ones which. in UC} Before you can use both you must set the mixer in UC. From UC click the second 1824c (S#4 for me) {the one set to Internal} the mixer will come up. Set all faders from 1 to 8 to 0db or as close as you can get it, for me it's 0.01 db. [very tedious and a pain in the ass]. And set balances as so: 1,3,5,7. to left and 2,4,6,8. to right. Then in the mix section ADAT 1/2 set fader 1 to 0db. balance left. ADAT 1/2 set fader 2 to 0db. balance right. ADAT 3/4 set fader 3 to 0db. balance left. ADAT 3/4 set fader 4 to 0db. balance right. ADAT 5/6 set fader 5 to 0db. balance left. ADAT 5/6 set fader 6 to 0db. balance right. ADAT 7/8 set fader 7 to 0db. balance left. ADAT 7/8 set fader 8 to 0db. balance right. You should be good to go. Just remember every time you start. Start computer, the main 1824c and let light blink red, blue, a couple times then start the second one.

@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Don't have a 18i20, but do have an 18i8. So can't speak on that directly. The 1824c has more input gain (65dB) vs the 18i20 (56dB) The 18i20 has the AIR effect, and a bit better implementation of the ASIO driver and Loopback. Both on-screen mixers are good. I slightly prefer the Scarlett on-screen mixer, but they are both pretty easy to figure out and use. The 1824c integrates more with Studio One. There are other feature difference as well, like when you turn on Phantom Power on the 1824c it's ON for ALL inputs (which isn't really a problem), while on the 18i20 you can turn on Phantom Power for 1-4 and 5-8. Just take a look over the specs of each and get the one that suits your needs.

How well would this compare in sound quality to the Presonus Studio 192? The $500 USD price tag is much more appealing than $800 USD, but i really dont like how the 1824c has phantom power on or off across all channels. The DSP on the Studio 192 is a bonus, but realistically, i wont take full advantage of it. Im also running an AMD processor so Thunderbolt is out of the equation.

The pre-amps are very clean all the way up to about 9, with minimal noise at 10. I use the Cloudlifter for the SM7B because it gives me even more gain so I'm not driving the Presonus pre-amps so hard. But the 1824c does have just enough gain to power the SM7B when you take it up to 9 or so. With the Cloudlifter I can put the gain at about 5.8 on the 1824c. The SM7B requires a MINIMUM of 60dB of gain.

Still need to save up more, but i cant decide between the presonus 1824c and the focusrite scarlett 18i20 3rd gen. I use a mix of Studio One 5 and Ableton Live 10, and having that extra compatibility with Studio One (adjusting gain staging on the interface inside the DAW) is a huge plus and ive been using Scarletts for so long that i want to try something new, but the 18i20 has the Air function and separate channel banks for phantom power which i like. If i could save up more i would definitely get the Studio 192 over either of them, but i dont think i would be able to spend that much

Although this is 3 yrs old, I was debating the same. As I have been a long time Presonus user starting with Studio One and the 44VSL in the early 2000's, I figured if I switched to the Focusrite 18i20, I would have to load the Focusrite software controller and also Universal Control as I have additional Presonus gear attached. The audio quality is a notch above Focusrite, at least from the reviews that I have read. There is nothing that the "Air Channel" creates that you can not duplicate within Studio One. For the most part as an acoustic solo performer, I like to record dry and adjust accordingly through the mix afterwards. I am looking at getting the 32sc next to do remote recording and build out my studio capability. Oh boy.

I do have a question though. I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2nd gen. Interface.Works without a hitch..I've been Focusrite for many years; in your opinion, would getting a presonus with their mic pres be an upgrade? (I like the fact that uon the Presonus using TRS inputs bypasses their preamps and signal goes directly to the A/D converters, UNLIKE Focusrite where you actually go through the interface pres.)I know these are similar products , but want to jump ship! Thanks again for the review.

so bad that this interface does not hace dsp like the vsl series. i was really looking forward to upgrade my 1818 with this unit, but no DSP is a big drawback for me
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 5 жыл бұрын
DSP could be cool for some uses for sure. The Studio 192 has DSP. But this interface is already low latency, and the driver has Loopback built it so you can use any plugins you want in a DAW and loop that back into OBS or Streamlabs. What's your use case that requires built-in DSP?
@genomenoid
@genomenoid 5 жыл бұрын
@@BenoniStudio i record some rehearsals, and most of the times, the musicians want a custom mix with FX for their in-ear. vocalists want compression, dly and rvb, guitarrists want a proper eq for their cabinet's mics, and so on. with a dsp box you can mix with effects without any noticeable latency, and without using any % of your CPU. studio 192, and ab1818VSL are low latency too, but DSP is a big plus. they are like digital consoles, as well as audio interfaces, without a DAW or secuencer doing all the work for them
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 5 жыл бұрын
@@genomenoid got ya. I can understand how DSP could be helpful in some situations. I might pickup a 192 mobile just for that. But in most cases I don't personally need DSP. And when I do need plugins live for streaming or whatever, my cpu has 20 cores so it's not an issue. Have you looked into the Universal Audio Apollo units? They sound perfect for your situation.

When this interface is powered on and off does it keep phantom power on or do you have to turn phantom power on every time you power up the interface? Also how does this interface hold up against the equivalent focusrite 18i20 3rd gen?
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 4 жыл бұрын
When you turn the unit off, everything goes off (of course) If you left 48v ON when you turned the unit off, it will be ON when you power the unit ON. You can also turn 48v On/Off from the Universal Control app. I have not used the 3rd gen Focusrite 18i20, so I don't know. The Presonus 1824c has more gain for the pre-amps though. Thorough! Curious, why would u choose 1824 over say, the Motu 828es? Also, that USB-C "feature" annoys the shit out of me, its blatant marketing persuading. people associate USB C with USB 3, so when they see "USB-C" connection, it instantly makes u think USB 3. It doesn't make much of a difference, though I hear USB 3 has better latency than 2 but I never tested it.
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Why? It depends. The 1824c is $499 and has 8 powerful mic pre-amps. The Motu828es is $999 and has two mic pre-amps, so you'd have to add another mic-pre if you need more inputs. The Motu does have more features like DSP, but if you don't need that BUT do need the mic pres, the 1824c fits the bill for a good price. Nothing wrong with either of them. I'd also mention the UA Apollo as nice choice, but again - depends on what you need and what you want to pay. USB C is a marketing choice, but it's also because newer laptops are not always including standard USB A ports. So by having USB C built-in to the unit, it's less confusion for the average new buyer who isn't as familiar with audio interfaces. And most new phones have USB-C, so it's about standardizing the port in the minds of the consumer. Like if some one has a modern phone, it has USB-C. If they see a big 2.0 USB-B port on an interface they may think it's bad or old or out-dated. So, yes, mostly marketing. But there is a function to it.

When you record a microphone through the 1824 with no latency, are you able to add reverb?

No. The direct monitor is just the direct input. If you want to monitor through plugins you would need to monitor through the DAW with a low buffer. You should be able to achieve a 'no latency' feel assuming your computer is up to spec and the reverb you are using is not CPU heavy.
