PREFACE to Aphesis: The Impossibility of Subjectivity
Aphesis is a philosophical journey through hell, ending with a brief-perhaps even miraculous-glimpse of salvation. Many readers of the first edition were quick to note that the transition from the atheistic philosophy of subjectivity to the meditations on Christian theology were sudden and did not naturally follow from the reasoning of the previous chapters, but is this not the very way in which the grace of God operates? It is often when the sinner is most lost in this world-totally unconcerned with anything beyond themselves-that the Spirit of God descends into their hearts and shatters all of their prior assumptions and misconceptions.
I found Christ through this book. When I wrote the first word of Aphesis in the summer of 2019, I was a staunch (Nietzschean) atheist, and I wrote the final chapter as a catechumen in the Orthodox Church. When I say that I found Christ through this book, I mean it in the most literal sense. My “moment of conversion” occurred while I was shooting hoops in my driveway, in deep and troubled thought over my inability to complete the final chapter of this book, one which would overcome, or at least provide a reconciliation with, the “impossibilities of subjectivity.” And suddenly, as if a veil had been lifted from my eyes, I perceived the profound truth that the Christian story of salvation provides a “narrow path” out of every paradox and contradiction I found myself lost in. I dropped the ball, and the coincidences I perceived “made me suddenly stand still.”
I then messaged my cousin, my best friend and brother in Christ, to tell him the good news. Over the next two years we discovered Orthodox Christianity. Orthodox Christian theology-which has its foundation in the ontology of communion-posits that the being of beings is found in the other, in communion with the other. Communion is not mere “relating” to the other as if there were an underlying self-relation that only secondarily “relates” to another self-relating being. The radicality of the communal ontology consists of its absolute opposition to the notion of self-relation, which it banishes into the outer darkness. Pure self-relation is not merely something to be avoided-it is strictly impossible. The source of all being, being as such, is the communion between the Persons of the Holy Trinity: “Nothing in existence is conceivable in itself, as an individual, such as the substance of Aristotle, since even God exists thanks to an event of communion.”
The ontology of communion posits that one’s being is not found in oneself but in and through the other. One reconciles with and finds oneself in Christ. If one remains enclosed within oneself, one cannot commune; it is only in abandoning one’s self-imprisonment through self-sacrifice that one becomes open to communal life.

"I recently had a meaningful conversation with my Orthodox spiritual Father, and we delved into a critical topic that many of us, especially young men, grapple with today - the struggle against pride and the allure of delusion. It's fascinating how these challenges can manifest in our lives through various avenues, such as the consumption of pornography, excessive video game immersion, or indulging in fictional worlds like Harry Potter and Dungeons and Dragons. As I reflect on these issues, I can't help but notice how easy it is to fall into the trap of these false, fabricated realities. It's a temptation that many of us face, myself included, and it can often leave us feeling isolated. However, it's essential to remind ourselves that we are not alone on this journey. We have the comforting presence of Jesus Christ with us. In the midst of these struggles, it's vital to stay grounded in our Orthodox faith and teachings, seeking guidance from our spiritual fathers and mentors. Together, we can navigate these challenges, striving for humility, and resisting the allure of delusion. Let's remember that our ultimate source of strength and truth lies in our unwavering faith in Christ."☦

Glory and Thanks to God Thankful for this channel! Greetings from Arizona A simple book recommendation can be so ineffably meaningful. Recommended on another Orthodox channel, I have been reading 'Elements of Faith' by Christos Yannaras, and want to highly recommend it to those with interest in Orthodox theology. I have found a pdf available online. It is very relevant to the content on this channel... If anyone has any other 'must read' book recommendations, so to speak, pertaining to Orthodox theology...feel free to comment.... Peace with you

Christos Yannaras considers it necessary to eradicate faith as a religious belief in a truth: "When the Church calls us to accept the Truth she holds, it is not a matter of theoretical statements that we must accept a priori, without reasoning. What is offered to us is a personal attitude, a certain way of life." His antidogmatism and ecumenism also show him as a modernist. He has nothing to do with Orthodoxy.

Can I turn away from my idolatry? Is there forgiveness for a mode of existence that separates itself from God? Can I turn my life towards God through my decision or am I stuck here to to learn that i can't be forgiven?

Some issues: How can imagination not be real? What does the imagination apprehend if not that which is(for imagination is to form images, and therefore all images are and their content as images likewise; the images exist in the imagery and are meaningful). The fictional can be meaningful and coherent. An example would be the artistic. I can read LoTR and derive meaning of it, as an example. Additionally, we all form images of God in our mind and no one understand God entirely and therefore all our images of God, as the basis of the objective must be false and hence we would all be necessarily proudful. This is obviously problematic. On another hand, if the Divine is relational, then are we divine as well? If so, then we creating "false" images would be effectively creating images in reality. In order to negate this, we need to be viewed as distinct from the Divine, which is not coherent and would resort to a notion of self-relation of the Divine and self-relation of the self without communion. If communion is Divine, then we cannot be ontologically separated from the Divine, for to be outside the ontological communion of the Divine would necessarily require a self-sustaining substance. But if the Divine is exhaustive, then we as entities must also be intrinsically in communion with the Divine(even if not fully); if the Divine is the ontological basis of "the real", then even our fictions, which are meaningful, must also be in communion with the Divine(and hence in communion with "the real").

The imagination is real, as in terms that imagination is a thing that we think of, but, what the imagination thinks of is fake
@natanaellizama6559

@@LukeTheGreat1 The contents of the imagination are the imaginations themselves. There is no imagination without... object of imagination. There's always an object of intention within imagination. This is well investigated in phenomenology(and existentialism). I would say that we have no grounds to determine the fakeness of things. This is not given to us in the experience, at least not in an absolute sense, nor is it given to us by reason. In fact, both reason and experience give us the experience and maybe even solidity of that which is usually said to be "imagination". An imagination is a representation(literally), and all representations are of something. This "of something" must be real, otherwise it would be a representation without representation. This is obviously absurd. Whatever I can conceive is given to me as a representation. If I look at my experience, some of these representations are not given to me actively but I'm the passive recipient of such a representation. What then do you mean by saying they are fake? Are you making an appeal to an universal state of affairs? If so, through which epistemic tool have you gained access to the foundation of reality and found a lack of the thing you say is "fake", why should I trust that you've done this, how is this verified, and why then can I imagine that which you, presumedly, say is not to be found? What then have I found through my imagination if not an object within reality?
