Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’re finally diving into the movie Priest, the 2011 action horror directed by Scott Stewart, based on the Korean Manga of the same name.
Starring Paul Bettany as the eponymous priest, Karl Urban, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Cam Gigandet, Stephen Moyer and Christopher Plummer, we follow an alternate universe where Vampire and humans are at war.
The centuries old feud led to the establishment of elite warries known as Priests that enabled humanity to gain the edge over the superhuman monsters. When the niece of a veteran priest is abducted, he takes it upon himself to hunt her captors and bring her back to the light before it’s too late.

@@adventwolfbane they were fighting both eventually. Humanity has always been the ire of demonkind. It's only in this film that God has given up on us and commanded his angels to destroy us, making us stuck squarely in between as the targets of both sides. As opposed to just pawns and playthings in a war between heaven and hell, waiting to be judged by god, according to the end times in Revelations. In this movie, God has passed judgment wholesale on humanity and left us no protection through his love and his angels. We are no longer pawns OR playthings in this movie's depiction of the End Times. We are simply obstacles to God creating something better than we became. But if I'm not mistaken, the old lady at the beginning of the movie IS a demon. I don't think angels would have much knowledge of or desire for the taste of human flesh, let alone babies like she was talking about. The only reason we don't see more demons is simply because they have always hated us and now with God condemning all humanity, all they have to do is sit and wait. Watch the suffering unfold like a movie while the angels do all their dirty work destroying humanity. Plus, why get involved at this point as a demon when it may cross your path with an army of angels who will clap your cheeks faster than you can say "Hail Satan!"?? Lol

And just as an fyi, if you end up accepting the Legion Sci-fi series as a canon sequel to the movie, demons end up getting very much involved later on once most of humanity has been purged.

Yeah totally, and they can introduce friendly vampires and retcon it so that the church actually started the war between humanity and vampires, and that the vampires were the good guys all along. Because as we all know; man is the real monster. They can also fill it to the brim with "ALL RELIGION IS...LE BAD (but just Christianity though)" like Castlevania did.

Karl Urban has been one of my favorite actors ever since he first turned up in bigger stuff back in the early 00s. Not in the upper tier of that list, but if I was to list my top 30 or so, he would be in it. (I'm pretty lazy about rating things on imdb, but even so I have 1,755 things rated there, that should give some indication of how much I have seen over the years). He always does good work. He is no Robert Redford (my vote for best actor of all time). Never really did anything great, just always good to really good. For decades. That is impressive. btw Karl not Carl.

In my opinion, the very first time I watched it, this movie was a very "comic-book" movie that was well executed. I didn't know if it was well adopted at the time but everyone acted so well in their role and everything that happened was appropriate to the setting of what the movie was trying to portray. It felt like a cartoon but a live-action; it was all very fantastical yet nothing was out of character for them to behave in that way.

I got a big WH40K vibe from this movie. The walled cities reminded me of Hive cities and they give off the feel of some backwater "civilized" world somewhere within the Imperium or just one that hasn't been rediscovered yet. The vampires could be the native xenos inhabitants of the planet and have been fighting the human colonists for several millennia. The superhuman priests could be explained away as the result of gene enhancement tech, which does exist in WH40K. Even the timeline of the humans fighting the vampires since the dark ages can be explained with the Age of Strife, as many human worlds regressed technologically and had to start over. Same can be true on this world. This whole scenario has played out a hundred times already all over the Imperium. This could be just another forgotten human colony awaiting assimilation into the Imperium.

My great grandfather started a rebellion against the church for the same reason in Mexico, he worked for the plantations and when he learned that the church was using the confessions against the poor starving people he joined the revolution and fought. against the church and the plantations. And now my great grandfather is known as a terrible person written down by the church, so later on the church paid someone my great grandfather adopted and made him come out of his safe place and got gunned down when he won the presidency of the town I come from.

I honestly love this movie but it really does bother me that there are 2 big plot holes 1) if a Vampires were stronger, faster it doesn't seem possible for humanity to last as long as they did. I mean if they used nukes and were still were on the brink of destruction, no way they survived for hundreds of years 2) if the priests managed to turn the tide why even keep vampires on reservations when they almost brought you to extinction. Still a fantastic movie and Karl Urban was amazing

That’s a really well done art style in the manga, I’m gonna have to pick that up. Is it a right to left read style? Last year I read a graphic novel Deserter by Junji Ito. Collection of short horror stories. I’ve never really understood the difference between graphic novel and manga, seems like it’s just a east/west hemisphere naming difference. It’s really solid though. Also what’s the best way to send requests? I got 3 graphic novel series I’d like you to cover. The Armory Wars, Transmetropolitan, and I’m sure you’ve been asked so much but The Sandman. Also maybe Preacher and Chew and Metro City.

Thank you for the rundown on the source material before the film, the manga might not be for everybody, but, I loved them. My only issue is that the film should've been its own IP and left the license to be able to do something more faithful. Besides "Black Hat" bearing a slight resemblance to Ivan Isaacs, the cross imprinted on the forehead, and the train having importance, the film really is a different story/world/universe.

This would be an awesome prequel to Vampire Hunter D. Like as the war just broke out and hope was still very much a thing among the humans of the time.
