Author and Doctor Malcolm Kendrick talks to us on revealing: high cholesterol levels don’t cause heart disease; a high-fat diet - saturated or otherwise - does not affect blood cholesterol levels; and, the protection provided by statins is so small as to be not worth bothering about for most men and all women.

Just going through it with My dr. Refused statins but he’s sending me to a specialist so this info is really helpful ammunition. I think I have a low qrisk3 and still statins were recommended.

I see someone else has complained about the background music. Older people, like me, may have hearing deficit, like me, resulting in what's known as lack of auditory discimination. You are unable to listen to two things at the same time. Shame, because I was enjoying it.

You are so right with pointing this out. Little "thought" is given to us, the older Generation as we all have a diminished hearing ailment which comes sooner or later with age. We are the ones who are listening to all kinds of good health advise, We don't need background music as well when trying to best "hear" clearly every word of the spoken message.

The first question that needs to be asked about any peer reviewed, double blind, and randomized study is: WHO PAID FOR THE STUDY. The second question is whether the results trumpeted are relative risk reduction or absolute risk reduction.

12:00 I was on Simvastatin for 3 months in total. I had rhabdomyalisis. One symptom is brown urine. At the time, I was indoor rowing several times each week and active in the gym, but doing nothing unusual/ different for me. Add to the above, severe muscle pains, exhaustion after a good night's sleep and I had good reason to quit after further research which showed that fitter people are at higher risk. Never again!

It's not how long you live that counts. It's for how long you're lively. Consider the following two 'identical' (monzygotic) twins, who - all other life exeperiences being equal, differ in the following respect. One lives to age 86 and enjoys excellent health throughout. The other lives to 96, but since age 80 has had no idea who he or she even is, 'thanks' to cognitive impairment. Which life would you rather have lived?

As well as increasing salt - especially sea salt with other minerals too, and my favourite is Redmond Real Salt; as well as not smoking - and I count myself grateful for never having done so; as well as eliminating sugar - I avoid as I'm Type 1 diabetic (or at least keep to a minimum given that I do succumb, though fortunately rarely, to the odd sugar craving which I find a real bane); as well as being relaxed and enjoying leisurely outdoor activity, my most regular being long walks; and as well as having a good social network, may I be presumptuous enough to suggest one more? GOOD and PLENTIFUL SLEEP.

Statins only reduce risk by 1% according to their own data (Lipitor). The 34% figure is relational percentage. In a large study (per Lipitor ad) folks taking a placebo had a 3% 'risk' of contracting CVD compared to the 2% risk of CVD for those taking Lipitor....that's a 1% difference. What the drug companies did was divide the 1% difference between the two groups divided by the 3% figure yielding 34%. This formula to present a larger number doesn't even make sense. Furthermore, the number of people in the study that actually contracted CVD was about 1% and there was no actual evidence that cholesterol was the culprit. There is also a very large studies that show just as many folks with 'perfect' cholesterol (LDL) have heart attacks as those with high LDL levels...and most of those with low LDL that had a cardiac event did not survive.

The higher your cholesterol, the lower your ALL CAUSE MORTALITY. One out of 206 on statins avoid a non-fatal heart incident within 5 years. One out of 50 develop diabetes BECAUSE of the statin.

The higher your chol level the longer you will live? And lower more likely to develop alzheimers etc. But also saying Low is a sign of some dis-eases.Big question for me is the comment that said about statins lowering chol. and extending life and it was only a couple of days. I am NOT concerned about extending my life - I am 72. I AM concerned about avoiding STROKE and DEMENTIA I likely won't take statins. But I am trying to lower cholesterol naturally with plant sterols and red rice yeast and niacin. Is the lowering of cholesterol as understood going to help prevent stroke for example.
