Daniel Brophy was an extraordinary chef who dedicated his life to his craft, teaching at a culinary school in a tranquil suburb of Portland, Oregon. His passion for cooking extended beyond the classroom, as he raised chickens and turkeys in his backyard and grew his own vegetables to create unique, gourmet dishes. Brophy's love for food and his commitment to sharing his knowledge with others made him a beloved figure in the community.

Tragically, on June 2, 2018, Daniel Brophy's life was cut short when he was brutally gunned down in the kitchen of the Oregon Culinary Institute, one of the places where he felt most at home. The shocking murder left the culinary world and the Portland community reeling, as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of such a talented and beloved chef. As the investigation into Brophy's death unfolded, suspicion fell on his wife, romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy, who had written an essay titled "How to Murder Your Husband" years earlier. Despite her claims of innocence, evidence mounted against her, including surveillance footage, gun purchases, and inconsistencies in her alibi. In May 2022, nearly four years after Daniel Brophy's murder, Nancy Crampton Brophy was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, bringing a measure of justice to the chef's family and friends. This episode of "Prime Crime with Jesse Weber" delves into the shocking details of the case, exploring the events leading up to Daniel Brophy's untimely death and the investigation that ultimately brought his killer to justice.

She surely had rehearsed it in her head. In her head, she was charismatic, funny, or even witty. In her head, she was the main character in one of her books and so she thought everyone would be taken by her charm and not suspect her. And surely no one would suspect the fuddy duddy old lady. Imo she seems like a covert narcissist to the point of being delusional and a psychopath.

THE RECORDED CALLS TO THE POLICE WERE SO TELLING. SHE WAS LAUGHING ON THE STAND! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! PLUS, SHE DIDN'T REMEMBER DRIVING AROUND THE MORNING HER HUSBAND WAS SHOT AND SUCCUMBED TO THAT SHOOTING! THAT DAY WOULD BE ETCHED IN MY MIND TILL THE DAY I DIED!! SHE WAS SO NONCHALANT ABOUT EVERYTHING. SHE DID IT. MOTIVE, OPPORTUNITY AND HOPEFULLY GAINFUL $$$$$$$ TO HER BANK ACCOUNT. I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED, IF SHE WAS TO BE FREED SOONER THAN LIFE, SHE'D STILL TRY TO ACCESS THE LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES. IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE HER. 🙄

What's even more heartbreaking for me is the fact that Chef Brophy's students show more compassion, grief, and love for him than his own wife. These people are not even family members and yet his death wrecked them. It goes to show how truly evil Nancy is.

And she doesn’t even get the money. It’s like criminals can’t do the math. Murder = jail. No money, no freedom. No husband. No grandkids. The likelihood of getting caught is really high. The risk vs reward is really low. She’s clearly living in one of her novels. I will say listening to her is annoying as heck, she’s that lady I couldn’t sit next to for 5 minutes. Money troubles, excess spending, multiple life insurance policies, and a short story on murdering your husband? He must of really liked her if he chose to stick around. Maybe it's like a frog boiling in a pot.

There is a reason why she had to belong to a writers circle - she could not plot a basic real life story murder, let alone write a good suspense story. (Just the few sentences of her writing that were shown are enough to see she was NOT a good writer.) First sentence: ‘I am a ROMANTIC suspense writer.’ Oh, really? Do you send your love a card every Valentine? Or do you write ROMANCE novels? I cringed with just the first paragraph.

You want to know why ........ it was the insurance money all along......... she worked to build up all that money in insurance claims........that's why she did it.... very selfish ....narcissistic .....horrible person ..... she is in jail where she belongs for the rest of her life She never showed any emotion when she was testifying at all about the loss of her husband and his friends couldn't even get through their testimony without becoming very emotionally upset

I just can't get into the mindset... planning the murder of someone you co-exist with everyday and have spent so many years of your life with. It doesn't appear she secretly hated him but in the end money was more important than anything and she revealed herself to be a manipulative monster. How tragic.

The way she attempted to be charming never sounds sincere. Her back handed compliments/insults just prove how much she didn’t LIKE him! I think she married him just to get his life insurance.

Wtf is that woman on about???? Why did she kill her husband, who didn't cheat on her, didn't hurt her............ That's a question that will always remain unanswered, she tells us. I don't know who she is, or why she was chosen to share her insight on the matter???? Seeing how she failed to grasp the clear motive behind this murder, it seems like a poor choice , a bit like choosing a life-guard who can't swim. The dead man's old lady had a number of life insurance policies, totalling $1.4 million, that's why she killed her husband. Never mind an unanswered question, although the question I started with, remains..............
