Used to hunt with a couple guys who had short arms. They both shot old Howard Hill longbows drawing at least 80 pounds at 28. They were deadly on everything from rabbits to squirrels to deer or anything else that walked, swam, or flew. Good hunting.

@@nathanhaylett5435 well, that depends. If you're shooting a 50 pounder at 28 and you're pulling 32 I'd guess you'd be pulling somewhere between 55 to 65 pounds. But what if you've got shorter arms and are pulling an eighty pounder at 28. You wouldnt be pulling the 80 but you'd be pulling about the same poundage with the shorter draw as the long armed guy. Length of pull is a relative thing.

Shorter guys with shorter arms can pull heavier bows.

In Deutschland darf zwar nicht einfach so mit dem Bogen gejagt werden, aber in angrenzenden Ländern, die Jagdreisen anbieten ist das möglich. Ich kenne ein paar Bogenjäger, regelmäßig in Ungarn jagen.

@@troymuller2228 The twisted strings have too much stretch, I use only one non twisted thick cord (about 1/4 inch thick) for bows 80-100 lbs strong, no stretch.

@@troymuller2228 Wrong, PP is stiffer and less stretchy than PE, but PE is stronger.

@@pinecone3630 yep there is more to it though then just a strip of rawhide. The rawhide is from the centre strip of the back along the spine. Where it is the thickest. The hide was also prepared the old way no chemicals used. As this causes the fibres to break down and weaken the hide.it was twisted while wet under tention and allowed to dry under tention.the hide strip was carefully cut out using a flake of swan river chert. And distal taperd on both ends so the middle of the string is a bit thicker near both the nock stringing ends. Its alot to do for a bow string but no more than flemish twisting a flax string etc by hand and way more durable. I can post a video of it later on my you tube channel if thier is enough interest in it.

@@pinecone3630 fish skin might be a bit thin for a hunting bow. But i do know the neck skin from snapping turtles used to be used by some southern tribes. Like the mandan's along the souris river basin.

Where is the taper in the string?

Look up my video on fletching an atlatl. That might be thge fletching style you are talking about. I typically stick with a classic 3 fletch. I have shot a lot of 2 fletch but normally reserve that for my atlatls. I have found 2 fletch arrows a little more temperamental than 3 fletch.

I suppose, to follow up, it would be interesting to know the weights of the strings in this test, and perhaps do separate tests with each string to analyze stretch. Perhaps hang a weight on the string and see how far it moves?

Its true the mandan tribe of south and north dakota did infact use the skin from snapping turtle necks whennthe turtles could be found in the souris river basin. Snapping turtles in that river can get close to 70 lbs plus. I know personally i have caught them before.

I have had the best luck with deer rawhide, cut straight down the back. The rawhide from the smaller critters have tough, lower stretch skin but haven't down well for me strength wide when cut into a spiral because the inside curve of the spiral is under more stress than the outside. I much prefer straight cut deer rawhide. It has done really well by me thus far. Equally as good as sinew as you can see in the video.

Thats true about snapping turtle neck skin but as of today most snapping turtle species are protected.

yes. Bow strings are under a tremendous amount of tension. Cotton strings or masons twine isn't up to the job

I've noticed he posts videos bowhunting on horseback. It is pretty common to use a shorter bow for that, which would have a shorter draw. That bow he has looks like an Osage bow, when they are compact they don't overdraw very well.

Thanks just my natural style. I am a big advocate for shooting however is most comfortable and this has been the result of a life of shooting in a way that was enjoyable to me. Sort of anthropologically significant in a way as well. A lot of the people in my circle have draw lengths from 18-24 inches and shoot more in front of their body like I do. I think the way I shoot is what likely attracted them to me in the first place because it gave them someone they could relate to.

Preciate the reply, I'm all for shooting however is comfortable was just curious.

It's just my style. I grew up shooting traditional without much influence other than my father who quite literally allowed me to shoot an anyway that made me happy just to keep my outside enjoying the outdoors and enjoying archery. It was just the natural way I took to shooting and the best way I know how. I shoot a little more in front of my body with a canted bow and shoot more of a floating anchor.

@@huntprimitive9918 With so many "hard and fast" rules thrown about in the archery threads, it's somewhat surprising to hear that a 22 inch draw takes game- I'm not doubting your skill or even your bows...its just that the indoctrination of 28-31 inch draws are all that I ever hear in person or come across in the internet. I myself was born in the city, and could only wish to have had my childhood in the woods. I make up for that now as an adult living in Michigan, where access to the woods is readily accessible.

@@gabrielramos4179 Yeah, I used to catch a lot of flak from the internet experts on my shooting, saying I would never be successful... those comments slowly but surely went away over the years of showing how this stuff works.
