PRIMITIVE COOKING on the BEACH! | Catch and Cook Lobsters and Clams

We collect salt water clams using a shovel and then cook up our lobsters in a primitive pit covered steamed with hot rocks and seaweed.
This method of cooking is very simple, you just dig a hole, fill with hot rocks and coals, put in seaweed, whatever you want to steam, then more seaweed and cover with sand to allow to cook. We let it steam for about 30 minutes, until the lobster's antenna popped off.
The find clams on the beach, look for a small hole made by the clam and then dig out about 6" from the hole and down 1-2 feet. Be careful when digging that you don't crush the shell or you will get a lot of sand inside the meat of the clam which is really bad on your teeth.
I'm not sure if this cooking is more primitive technology or bushcraft but it can be done very simply by just digging a hole and heating up hot rocks. We are digging the clams up in Maine, USA on the coast. I license to dig clams for 3 days costs around $15 and you can gather several pecks.

I grew up in Maine doing this same thing on the beach. Only mistake (besides the unmelted butter which is just wrong on so many levels) he made was he needed some burlap or canvas. That goes on top of the upper layer of sea weed and keeps the sand off the food. Add in some potatoes and unshucked corn on the bottom below the lobster and clams and you are doing it the real Maine way way.

"Primitive cooking on the beach" as long as you have a lobster boat, a lobster trap, a great big net. Not exactly a primitive survival situation. This also brings up a survival rule of mine: "Don't eat anything that squirts!" ;-) One word of advice: Be careful burning driftwood. It tends to have small pockets of water and after burning a bit it will steam and your fire will explode. A very enjoyable video! Looks like a GREAT time!

The nozzles are called "siphons" and the big piles of shells and other trash like broken pottery are called "middens" (or "archeologists' gold"). You guys ate like KINGS! I was so jealous! Great viddy showing how it's done. I loved that you showed the really old school way of steaming up the quahogs and I don't remember what the little ones were and the lobsters. Down in Mexico on the Pacific coast they fry them up in pork lard ("manteca") and you eat the whole thing, shell and all. It's really good with mayonaisse in that style, and of course a big 1.1 liter beer.

On the Pacific Ocean beach in Washington you walk along the beach slowly like a penguin and when you see an air hole you stick your long scooped clam shovel in the sand very fast. These are called razor clams and they can dig deep very fast LOLOL. We'd fill a bucket and take them back to the cabin and my mother and grandmother would throw them in fresh water to get the clams to spit out their sand. Then they world either dice the clams up for clam chowder or fry crispy clam fritters. They would cook on an antique wood stove. Yup the cabin had an out house to go with it as well LOLOLOL. Many moons ago. Thank you for reminding me of that memory you guys. GREAT JOB on the lobster. Yummy in the tummy my favorite Lobster dipped in garlic butter.

Marc Weins thought his recent Inca stone ground cooking was the most amazing thing he’s ever seen . They layered potato’s, hot rocks, corn, hot rocks, marinated meat, more rocks then bushes of herbs to cover(your seaweed) to create steam and then cover with dirt while it all cooks. Same principle you have here. Genius cooking method. But Woodbeard is doing like the Incas let Marc know!
