In honor of the 40th anniversary of Prince’s second album, Prince-which was released on October 19, 1979-The Prince Estate and Warner Records are pleased to announce the surprise release of a previously unheard, solo acoustic demo recording of the Grammy-winning Prince track “I Feel for You,” available on streaming services and as a limited-run 7” vinyl single.
The new two-track single includes the acoustic demo of “I Feel for You” on the A-side and the original studio recording on the B-side, and is available as a Made to Order release exclusively at Prince.com for the next seven days.
The special, stripped-down demo recording captures a 20-year-old Prince in a raw, intimate moment, and begins with the sound of the artist pressing the record button on a cassette tape recorder and picking up an acoustic guitar. The recording was created in the winter of 1978-1979, around the time Prince was preparing to make his solo debut at the Capri Theater in North Minneapolis, and it was recently rediscovered on one of the countless cassette tapes stored in his legendary vault.
The fully produced, studio recording of “I Feel For You” was included on Prince’s second album, Prince. It would become a hit a few years later, when it was covered by Chaka Khan and released as the title track of her solo album, I Feel for You, in 1984. Her version, which featured a cameo by the rapper Melle Mel, became a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned two Grammys-including a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song that honored Prince’s contributions as songwriter.

GOD of love gave him that voice. silly me. Eye wrote this song because EYE saw Chaka was falling HEAVY for Don Cornelius... And was supposed to be a Prince Chaka purple reign. so that's why my specific word: I THINK (THINK THINK) I love you... Because I saw Chaka really KNEW who she loved already... Don. So I was trying to ease her back to Prince... didn't work. so here I suffer. silly me. should've just wiped you all eternally is how I feel at times. rather god be abused while youre comfortable in hell. yup.

"Typical" Prince genius & simplicity. I miss him. We were recording some overdubs at a studio in Burbank/Studio City area around October '79, when on a break the engineer said: "Hey, you guys should hear this - this guy's incredible" and he put on a two-track master of the Prince recordings they had just finished the month prior (or thereabouts). We were blown away at how amazing the songs and playing and sounds were, when the engineer told us the guy played most of the instruments himself and the guy's name was "Prince something." I never put together who that was until around '85 when "Purple Rain" took over. I wish I could have met him at that stage ('78-'79) of his life. RIP Prince Rogers Nelson.

Not-Homesick NG A lot of people compare him to Mozart but I don’t see it. Mozart played 2 instruments vs Prince playing 27 which definitely makes him one of kind. Singer, songwriter, music producer, musician, dancer, not to mention he influenced countless generations with his music videos, sense of fashion, ability to re-invent himself and his tireless work advocating for his fellow artists to own their publishing and master recordings. Although Prince lived 25 years longer than Mozart he nearly quadrupled his output of musical compositions. It’s time we put Prince in a class by himself. 🙏🏼❤️

I love the Beatles. There was something magical about those 4 unicorns, whether they were separate or in the same room. I love Nirvana. There was something dangerous and beautiful about those distorted power chords and the primal screams coming from the pits of that little, tender man... but Prince? There are really no words. 1,2,3, maybe 4 generations may pass before we witness another with complete mastery as he.

R L he was talented. He wasn’t really a showman, though. And the fact that he stated in his rolling stone interview that for his second album they would go into the studio and jam along to Prince’s Parade album until they came up with something to record. Really?? And he also stated in said interview that his second album, the one of which I speak, was his demo to produce Prince’s next album. As you can plainly see, crack is bad for you. Just say no, kids., just say no.

Another confirmation here. The message that he sent so loud and clear saved me from a downward spiral as well. Im sure drs wouldn’t have handled like I did, but it really was Princes music that turned things around for me. Thank u Prince.
