I love Ashitaka. He's such a great role modell. His selflessness. He doesn't care about being vulnerable. He trusts his compassion to invoke the right action in the people he interacts with. When he got shot he carried on to save san fully knowing he'd surrender himself to san and her mercy. He could have ran away. But he didn't. He cared.

This film is one of Miyazaki's best achievements. The conflict between life and death, nature and industry was spectacular. I wish we could see another similar work like this masterpiece.

I love this movie! You don’t really know who’s the villain, as which intrigue in depth. As no one understands San’s heart, as she is seen bad through the whole of Iron town and many people. But the only human as we would call San a wolf, is Ashitaka. Man…. What a true love story? This movie shows true pacifism... which to spare everyone.... the idea that war and battles are bad. And to persuade the bad into good for to find what’s unclouded by hate. So everyone could live in peace... and that’s what I think Ashitaka’s objective was... to find the ones unclouded by hate... to find peace. And conger it amongst everyone, to end a war, to end hatred. Studio Ghibli is a work of art. With a depth of meaning which veils you in, for a example for the real world. I think what Miyazaki is trying to show in this movie, is to shed peace to this very world. And instead focus on it’s point of view. To really understand, Hayao Miyazaki. You genius! Thank you… honestly thank you… for making my childhood…. 💖

My favourite Miyazaki film, I’ve always loved the fact there’s no complete villain. I suppose you could say the the Emperor or the Samurai Lord could be,but both are more of a force of malevolence than an actual villain.

The first anime I ever watched, and it remains my favourite despite finding many incredible films and series since then. This was the scene that absolutely sold it for me, Ashitaka doesn’t fight unless absolutely forced to, even going so far as to completely shutdown this fight. None of the main cast are really villains in this film, Eboshi is fighting to protect her people, San is fighting to protect nature, and neither can see any alternative but to fight or lose all they hold dear, the desperately needed an outsider to mediate between them.

“Look everyone! This is what hatred looks like, this is what it does when it catches hold of you! It’s eating me alive and very soon it will kill me.” This words from Ashitaka in the princess Mononoke always rings true with me more and more as I see things like this. People constantly fighting eachother over problems they have no real intent to fix. People constantly want a reason to fight and hate and it’s unbelievably sickening

@KalashVodka175
@KalashVodka175 11 ай бұрын
I don't think it's so much that peoples want a reason to fight, but more that people's are blind to others solutions, alternatives, because they require more mental effort, and more risk for oneself. In Princess Mononoke, the conflict is very, very complex because both sides is doing something right for their own at the end of the day. Mononoke fights for the Forest and all of her denizens that are under predation from the industrial humans from Iron Town. But Eboshi fights for her peoples, the sick, the weak, the outcasts : those who are under predation from not only her fellow men, but also and most importantly from the cruelty of nature. The conflict seems completely unsolvable with anything else than violence, just like how in nature, the predator MUST kill its prey in order to survive, and the prey NEEDS to escape and leave the predator to die of hunger. The predator isn't at fault, he's a product of his nature... But here's the magic of man : despite all of our flaws, despite the potential for cruelty, sadism, selfishness (all of which, by the way, are perfectly in tune with the cruelty and indifference of nature itself); we are capable of attempting to find alternatives to conflicts. We can cease to be predator or prey : we can be custodians of our future and the future of our planet, but it is a difficult choice that requires one's soul to become unclouded by hate : hate of the other, and hate of the self, because both are insidious and destructive! But here lies the problem : finding solutions to become custodians rather than to regress back into predator or prey is hard and complex and requires foresight and wisdom and a certain amount of luck. The solution to Mononoke's and Eboshi's conflict is a reduction of the predation of Iron Town on the forest, and an end of the assaults of the Forest on the town and her denizens, to find a more acceptable balance where both sides can harvest enough ressources and live in peace without destroying the Forest irremediably. It is possible, but difficult, and not an easy choice.

Not like when I watch other old movies, the more I watch, the more it gets dumb. But movies like this get better every time I get back to them, as I grow a little older, I feel more, I understand more and appreciate more of the art, the meaning, messages of this movie. And I am sure next time when I rewatch this, it'll bring me a whole new perspective to life again

This is probably the movie closest to my heart. I had so few role models growing up, people I aspired to be like. Ashitaka has always been someone I looked up to. And I hoped one day to find my San. But my curse was different. It wrapped around my mouth and tore apart my mind. I'm just a broken remnant now. But I will always remember this legend of a story, and who I could have been, like a familiar haunting ghost cradling me softly to the earth.

''Let me just cut the damn thing off!'' I don't blame Ashitaka for being in no hurry to lose one of his arms, but I've always wondered if that would have actually worked. Could he have rid himself of the curse in his arm simply by amputating said arm, or would it still be there, manifesting in the next closest part of his body?
