I always told my students that school is not about learning facts and figures. It's about learning how to complete a task well within a given time frame - aka, developing a work ethic. In the real world that is what counts. I told them that I never worried about them failing science class, but I did worry about them failing life.

I do think handing in a paper 3 weeks late and only getting 10 points off is a very fair(actually more than fair) and generous grade.I'm not against people getting points off for handing in work late because getting points off being late does motivate people to be responsible and prepares people for the workforce.He seemed upset because his friend handed in a people 3 weeks late without any points taken off.It's important for teachers to be consistent with grading standards with students.

In some of my classes at college, they would knock it down a letter grade for every day (not just when class meets, but every single day) late, according to the syllabubs. And they wonder why people aren't prepared for college when people complain over an 85 when it is 3 weeks late.

When a student hands in an assignment 3 weeks late and only gets 10 points off for being late, the student should definitely be thanking the teacher. I got an 85 on my midterm that I was 40 minutes late to and finished in 15-20minutes (we had 55mins left to class) and was relieved because I thought I was going to get a C, so a B isn't too bad. Although he does make a valid point, if other students turned in their essays at the same time as him and got less than 10 points off then it shows bias and it isn't fair. The principal should've asked the teacher who else turned in their papers 3wks late and then made a decision.

In the college classes, any late submission is a zero, no exceptions!

I wouldn't even complain about an 85 to begin with, but this guy is damn lucky he got what he got. If it were me, he'd be down to a minimum D (that's a 65 for me, so -35 points right off the bat) if I was feeling generous.

This is why our system is turning out turds with no work ethic. Because when you miss a stinking deadline - YOU'RE FIRED! There is no "Partial credit for missing deadlines in the real world. There's only one grade - FAIL!
