Wrapping a home in foam board insulation or this Rockwool product before putting on vinyl siding seems like it would also work to insulate the exterior of the building. Too many people cheap out and don't put the insulation on before the vinyl siding or they put up insulation that is too thin. One inch or inch and a half is needed. Vinyl siding is a cheaper siding product but you do not want to cheap out on the insulation.
@Danedelman_thp
@Danedelman_thp 4 жыл бұрын
Depending on the outdoor temperature depends on how thick of continuous insulation is needed BUT....over an inch of foam makes for a vapor closed exterior, if not enough the dew point still falls in the cavity yet needs to dry inward. When using a vapor open product like ROCKWOOL Comfortboard 80, even if you use too little and the dew point falls to inside the cavity it will still dry outward very quickly!

build the building on a compacted layer of foam glass; go for 2x4 walls (or whatever is cheap and thin); fill the cavity with plumbing, electric or other installations and cob/clay plasters for (thermal mass) temperature variation and humidity controll; internal plasters will provide air tight layer; insulate from the outside with whatever R value you wish (more is better) with continous layer; dont break the insulations with rafters, create the overhang with roof cover structure; follow passive house principles (its for free); get a cheap, low maintenance and not toxic house

I’m on a farm in Washington state where we get a constant flow of water into our basement maintaining about 4’ - 5’ deep between March and June/July...or...roughly 40,000 gallons of water. The basement used to be 1500 square ‘ but previous owners filled all but 12pm x 12pm with gravel to stabilize the foundations. Right now I use two 2hp high velocity sump pumps that fill two 10,000 gal above ground tanks which provide irrigation during the dry months and the other 20,000 gal (roughly) is simply pumped back across to a drainage fed by artesian wells on the back of the acreage. I’d like to solve this issue completely but ground water comes up to within 8”-12” of surface every year. Everyone out here has to wait to plant and the flooding issue wasn’t mentioned at purchase. We are restoring this 112 year old beauty bit by bit but may need suggestions here

Not that it matters as much today with people wanting to be as sealed and efficient as possible. Years ago builders would use the full equivalent of the materials in a wall to reach the r value. Meaning, exterior sheathing is listed to have an r value of 1, sheetrock also has an r.value of 1. And those values count back then. In a wall requiring r 22, a builder would buy an equivalent r 20 and the building materials made up the difference.

Great info! But I disagree with statement Kevin makes at 4:24. Code doesn't want you to have walls perform at a certain R value. Code requires a certain R value of insulation to be installed. So if you install the required R value you aren't below requirements. But doing these extra steps will maximize its efficiency

Guys that was fantastic I really enjoyed it. You provide a lot of very informative info. I do have a question and I know it hard to talk about when money is involved. This would have been a good place to do it. What would have been the difference in price to do the extra insulation as opposed to not doing it. I am sure you are very aware money always enters into the mix when you start looking at these extras. While the long term gain is great and the heating and money saved by the extra insulation, but how long would i take to recoup the extra cost.

One is just for air sealing to keep the real movement of air the others end up being vapor open so even though you have the additional layers they still allow moisture VAPOR to move thru allowing for drying both to the inside and outside.

@Danedelman_thp
@Danedelman_thp 4 жыл бұрын
larry moore When doing that application you want to look at 2 things, air sealing and insulating, spray foam does both but you would need to them cover it for fire protection and the cost is a lot just to have the truck come to you. For a DIY project, you could either work on the exterior(which is probably not the case for a retrofit) or add an air barrier that is taped and then add ROCKWOOL insulation. That is the best...good would be just adding ROCKWOOL in that area and we will help with the airflow for the most part. I have been thinking about similar assembly for zone 6 Canada , 3” comfortboard under siding and a rain screen, solotex mento 1000 for WRB taped and sealed, 1/2 inch plywood for shear, 2x6 studs with comfortbatt, intello for the interior air barrier, then a service cavity to eliminate penetrations in the intello. Filled with more rockwool and finally drywall. R12, plus r22, plus r6ish for effective R somewhere in the high 30’s. My concerns are water tight details around the doors/windows especially using North American flange windows and also at the sill with concern for rodents( mice) and insect penetration behind the rain screen. I would love to see details for install. My biggest concern would be finding a builder who actually would agree to do it........

It's simple: Objectively, for an R21 you should (my observation) design from the stud. A 3.5 stud = R3.5 A 5.5 stud = R5.5 Therefore, design your total R-value from the stud. Therefore, guess what? Future construction will incorporate low permeability insul board to the inside face of the stud for an R3, R4, R5; &, high perm insul will be installed in the wall cavity; & high perm insul board will installed on the exterior. Eg. 3/4" or 1" t&g xps, .1 perm Class 1 (R4 or 5) a perm + 3.5" cellulose or batt (R13) + 3" Comfort bd (R12) = R30+ At the stud, objectively, 5+3.5+12 = 20.5+ My opinion The insul on the exterior works great as a thermal break in the summer, & the interior board insul works great as a thermal break in the winter. There is still only one vapor retarder ( the xps that meets 0.1 perm ) I think this assembly will be the future. Why? Because a 3.5 stud will work making it easier to retrofit an existing house.
@ericbarritt304
@ericbarritt304 4 жыл бұрын
This would be a conventional assembly. If the vapor retarder class 1 is installed on the exterior (modern assembly) then a high perm insul board would be installed to the inside face of stud. (You can only have one vapor barrier) It would be nice if Roxal made made 1" or 3/4" Comfort Board that would meet an R3 or R5, & could be fastened to the inside face of stud. The insul should have a low VOC. Maybe, incorporate cellulose in the mfr process to create a more rigid material to affectivity hold up to gypbd.
@ericbarritt304
@ericbarritt304 4 жыл бұрын
Clarification: The 1st comment would be conventional - vb on interior The 2nd comment would be modern - vb on exterior. I think future methods of wall assemblies will have thermal breaks on both the interior & exterior. I didn't include weather barrier, but weather barriers would also be part of the assemblies.

Considering you loose about 70% thru the roof, 20% thru the structure portion of the walls an 5% thru the floors it looks like a waste of material especially plywood environmentally it’ appears to be a failure. Financially, I don’t believe it will ever pay in a lifetime.

Why do you make everything so complicated ? Thermasteel panels were invented ages ago. R21 , no vapor, water barrier required , no termites, no rotting wood , you can save even on a foundation if you build a shallow frost protected foundation and stuck panels on footing
