Whether it's because you're on a budget, or you just can't justify paying $200+ for a pair of football boots, just know that no boots will make you a better player. With that said, football boots are still a very important piece of equipment, and you should definitely get the best ones your budget will allow for. In other words, don't just settle for something because it's cheap, or because it looks cool.
In today's video we take a closer look at the budget friendly Nike Phantom GX 2 & Luna 2 Academy boots. Priced at $90 and $95 respectively, they're admittedly solid for what they cost, but are they the best you can do at the sub $100 price point? We discuss the good, the bad and what other boots you might want to consider before settling on the Academy tier Phantoms.

That shoe was wildly overrated and overpriced. They were unreliable, uncomfortable to many, and were overall worse than the competition.

⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠@@darty2002 that’s so funny because i was thinking the complete opposite 😂 that shoe was wildly slept on and it was the last top end model to retail for $250. They are reliable, comfortable to the majority, and are overall better than the competition.

@@2starweakfoot I've been working Soccer Retail for about 2 years. I've seen awful shoes (ie Predator Edge, early Superfly 9s). And the GX had the same issues those two shoes had... blowouts in the arch of the foot. I've dealt with the defects of way too many GXs to consider them a nice cleat.

@@skullx. They were Nike's widest offering for a while. They were completely beat out by the Adidas Predator Accuracy's. And if you didn't mind mid-cuts, even the Futures were better. The GXs are an "okay" wide shoe compared to the competition. It doesn't really deserve any special treatment. I work retail and warehouse with soccer (football) shoes and have worked with Nike Europe to get customer reviews and thoughts on the GXs specifically. There are plenty of reasons to change my opinion especially based on the age of a boot. I see common defects, I have a couple hundred of people that try them on. I hear it all, and as a boot it didn't age very well at all; Blowouts were common and the cleatplate tends to crack or have studs snap off.

Tired the new Luna 2 Academy today on foot and didn’t feel like it was lacking in quality tbh. Was a nice snug fit and was really quite happy with it.

Hi Josh, really like ur work of reviewing almost every Football Boots on the market…. I think we will never get a buget boot with any features of an elite modell, so every modell in any price point stays for his own. the 3 tier models makes only sense for kids they will grow up. otherwise everbody should buy the elites to get the best out of the shoes, but when all brands release almost every month a new colourway u get crazy to decide which i will spend almost 300€ for.

I guess the hard thing here is when you talk about the fit of the boot you can only give how it feels on your foot. For me the Phantoms seems to fit really well, snuggly compared to the Legend 10s which are tight, though if I go half a size up in the 10s they are then a bit too long in the toe. The good thing here is to talk about a few boots you feel are good for us to then see which fits us better. I went in expecting to get Legend 10s or maybe Puma Futures but came out with the Phantoms.

Injured my heel very badly…any recommendations for any cleats that is friendly to the heel? / Tiempo but wider fit / copa elite but skinnier studs / Mizuno but with more modern sole plate? Retro models are welcomed too (I’ve tried these and they don’t work: Mercurial, Phantom GX, X, predator, Morelia neo, puma ultra)

I tried the Tiempo Legend 10's and for me they were too tight on the side of my feet and the GX's fit the best. All I would like to know is what would be a better a option the GX1 with the Ghost lace system Academy or Luna 2 mid cut Academy ???? Pricing don't matter between these 2 👍

Hey Josh, how thick is the microfiber padding on the Luna? My favorite boots of all time as a rec player was the collared original Phantom GT. It had a thick heel pad that locked me into place well and no boot I've tried since has come close.

Hi Josh, I am looking for a pair of boots with a synthetic sticky upper, but with a turf outsole. Which model do you believe offers the best stickness to the turf? I say specifically turf because I know the nike and adidas options use the upper of the first takedown fg version, and they don't offer much of a grip.

Both are excellent, but very different when it comes to fit and feel. It very much depends on what you’re personally looking for and/wanting from your boots.

The reasons for many of these differences is that the Phantom Luna has actually been designed by women, for women. This is Nike’s response to ACL injuries female footballers are disproportionately susceptible to, with manufacturers being called upon to do more. The Phantom Luna considers the shape of the female foot, tread, weight and pressure distribution while running, which are all different between men and women. There is a lot of research out there about this. Suggest you have a bit of a Google before your next Phantom Luna review, because the two boots in this video are kind of incomparable for a few significant reasons
