Probably the Easiest Router Sled out there ( Flattening a Live Edge Slab without a Planer)

Making a simple and cheap router sled for flattening boards and slabs. This jig allows you to joint and plane bigger boards that won't fit in your planer or jointer with help of a router. I used some 30mm by 30mm angle iron and some 18mm plywood scraps, a few screws and you are done. you can make this in just a couple of minutes. I used some spacers on my router attached with some hot glue to accommodate for the rounded corners of the angle iron. and took some 5cm by 5cm pine wood to ride the sled on. With the plywood strips, I can easily adjust the height of the sled. I've chosen an 18mm router bit to flatten the beech slab because that was my largest bit. For me this is the best router sled video I've seen, and I've seen a lot. I keep seeing "10-minute router sled" and "Simple sled build" everywhere, and then watch someone assemble it on fast forward (i.e. they spent hours) out of 20 different types of nuts, bolts, wood, metal, plastic etc. This one _is_ the simplest I've seen, and the one that makes the most sense to me. Plus the music editing was excellent! Great job.

Great idea! I had some angle iron from an old rollaway bed and cut it up for the rails. I discovered that the radius of the inside bend makes my router rock, so I'll modify the router base with a couple strips of wood similar to what you have done to deal with the unevenness. This idea has a lot portability and easy to modify for a variety of sizes. Thank you for posting!

This is by far the simplest setup I have seen for a home shop. I just watched one using linear rails that moves so fluidly but I think too expensive for a home shop. Your setup is something most can afford. Great job!

I made a similar with angle iron six years ago,it works! If you put a bolt or dowell down through your end blocks that hold your angle iron at the ends, you can use both hands on the router. Just a thought.Good job! I put leveling screws with foot pads on the ends of mine- that works well if yout table is flat.

Playing the music instead of the sound of the machine tools is genius. I particularly like way the bowing of strings replaces the action of a saw!

Absolutely dead simple and highly effective. I'll be headed to the home store to pick up some angle iron later. Only thing I think I'll do different is put a stop on the bottom of either side of the sled to keep it from slipping off the rails. I have some angle iron cut-offs I can use. If I can figure out how to attach it, I may use UHMW as sliders on the sides of my router base. I love the sound effects and the music.

I hate how-to videos with no talking in them. This guy knows how to make a how-to video that needs no talking. Very entertaining, and still does the job intended. When he grabbed the saw and there was just a short violin sound, I wasn't paying much attention, but that out of place sound that fit so perfectly snapped my attention right to the video, where it stayed to the end. Superb editing, and creativeness with. Easily earned my sub.

Very enjoyable sound-effects and great, simple sled. The white walls are a great idea too because light spreads everywhere instead of being absorbed by the usual plain wood color of many workshops. Things are easier to locate against the white when you want to grab one out of a thousand objects...more cheerful too. No words spoken...that's really nice but you displayed close-ups to show problems and solutions perfectly. You've raised the bar extremely high for all other videographers.

A few weeks ago, I found an old angle iron bedframe so I have the angle iron already. Never thought about running the sled length wise. Always thought about width wise. Sound effects are great, and the glue gun trick for clamping to the work bench is new to me. I've got a strangely shaped tree-chunk that wants to be a table when it grows up, so this will be most useful. Thanks!

Loving the sound effects. I'm glad someone figured out how to let those sounds play out outside of the head. :-)I made something almost exactly like this about six months ago. The thing is that I welded it together and included an edge guide on one side so it wouldn't move around on me. But I like the wooden stop block at the end.

I agree with MrBonners on using a sacrificial base plate. Make the plate slightly larger than the router then radius the edges and you could do away with gluing the spacers onto your router. With that said, great video and a wonderful concept.

Nice, I used 1/8 inch steel angles on my fattening sled. Good idea. Straight and sturdy. Cut mine on a jawhorse. great tool. looks like you have 3/4 MDF over 3/4 plywood for your reference. Should prevent any deflections.Thanks.
