To be fair... Grey isn't unreasonable. And a lot of Americans that travel to Europe & stay at the hotel always want the hotel room cold about 16 degrees C. Because in my job, as a cabin crew, a lot of my coworkers cannot sleep in a hot room where the AC temperature is stuck at 25 degrees C, due to this "eco-friendly mode"; we need cold rooms to fall asleep to combat jetlag & prevent fatigue for us when operating flights. They would get very frustrated & order portable fans to be delivered to the room.

We had the same issue with the thermostat at a school I worked at. Solution: Hand warmers if you want to get the room really cold quickly. Desk lamp with an incandescent light aimed right at the thermostat for longer times. Works like a charm.

A 40w lightbulb on a long wire for easy access to a connector in a black box for complete shading for when you want to go to sleep. You can attach the box to the thermostat for maximal effect. Bring a 20w lighbulb as well to see which one works best for the thermostat in question. 60w can be a fire hazard. p.s. have a square hole on the side of the box that's the size of the thermostat. Adjust with a knife as needed. This should make mounting "a breeze"

Ok, so my understanding of it is that in some hotels, the thermostat is mostly fake because the HVAC system is not individual to each room but rather like a whole house system where there's one thermostat that regulates the entire building and they're not turning down the entire hotel for just you. The thermostat in those types of hotels are a placebo. They do literally nothing and replacing it will not fix anything. The hotels you want are the ones with the giant modules sticking out of the wall if you want to be a thousand percent sure you have absolute personal control. Otherwise it's a literal roll of the dice until you get into the actual room.

I thought the same thing but it's probably programmed to remember the last setting until it gets a new instruction. Having said that, the thermostat probably isn't encrypting its communication. If you got a wifi packet sniffer and a raspberry pi, you could probably get it to connect to the pi instead and send it your own instructions. Probably more work than the usb hand warmers though.

This is only peripherally related to the topic of this video, but I had a smart thermostat, and I liked to keep my apartment in the northern US cold when I was at work during the day, so it'd be freezing cold when I got home from work, so I could sit in front of the heat vent for an hour or two as the house warmed. Also, I'd crank the heat up higher if I wanted to sit there longer, or any other time I was home and I wanted the warm relaxing bliss of the heat vent, including during the day on weekends. After a while, this caused the smart thermostat to lose it's mind and see-saw the temperature up and down with sheer insanity

First potential problem with replacing the thermostat in the room that I see? You have no way to shut off the breaker to the electricity running the HVAC or thermostat, and would therefore be switching out a thermostat which has live electrical running to it. Not the safest situation in the best of cases. LOL Good luck, tho. I'm with you on wanting a room cooler than they typically want me to set it. My advice would be rather to try a nicer chain of hotels? Somewhere like a Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons may have either a) more range they allow on their thermostats (because you're paying for it) or b) better concierge service that will actually accommodate a solution to the problem (because you're paying for it).

The reason why he asked "why?". Is because 16 Celsius is too cold for a healthy human environment, and it's a waste of power. Normal human operating temperature is 21-24 Celsius. They don't want your room freezing neighbouring rooms either, creating an AC system that battles itself between rooms.

For anyone in the position of hotels being to warm, when they ask why, say it's because of accessibilty issues. if they ask more, which is rude and depending on where you are illigal, you can throw in an autism (which is super likely when you 1. listen to this episode, 2. find it hard to talk to hotel personel, 3. and have sensory issues like these), or just a generic "i have sensory issues", which is true. You are having the sensory issue "to warm" which is super valid. If they still don't want to (or possibly can't), you can ask them what they can do instead to make the hotel more accessible to you in terms of temperature. Screw capitalism, get comfy.

I have a fix to your thermostat problem. Step 1) Get an extension cord capable of reaching the thermostat Step 2) Get a night light with a standard incandescent light bulb. Run the extension cord to the thermostat and blue in the lightbulb. The bulb will create a very small amount of heat capable of tricking the A/C into running. If this is to much you can always use a timer for the outlet to turn it on and off. In total you should be spending no more than $25. This works especially well if they have their thermostat in one of those plastic cases. You’re welcome.
