Sometimes solving one problem can create other problems. Both good and bad.
Today I am back in Eureka California after spending some time in and around Seattle. This area of the Pacific Northwest is similar to Seattle in a few ways. But it tends to be a little warmer and a little sunnier here in Humboldt county.
Being back here has been a joy. And today we will visit two of my favorite places. Arcata Community Forest and Trinidad.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

The eucalyptus there were planted as a windbreak in the early part of the 1900's. A large section of them was removed recently due to trail work and their advacned state of decline (100 years is a long life for a eucalyptus in the northern hemisphere, where they are not actually native and it is too wet for them). Cal Poly Humboldt used to be a State University, it is still a university, just with a different designation. As you can tell, I spent some time there. Was a student when it was Humboldt State University. One of my favorite places in the world! Trinidad is my favorite beach. If you are still around, the restaurant on the pier does a great breakfast. And Sue Meg Stae Park (formerly Patrick's Point) has my favorite campground ever. Thanks for the views of my favorite places!

Well, you indeed saved me time and gas by visiting and showing one of my favorite areas north of Arcata. If you take the coastal access road north from where you were parked, you can find short trails that lead out on to some land masses, some rocky and grassy flat areas surrounded by ocean and with the best scenic views....thanks and take care !!

The eucalyptus trees were planted about a hundred years as a windbreak. They just cut down half of them to accommodate the trail that connects Eureka and Arcata.

Trinidad is where I stayed up there when my grandson graduated from Humboldt State University in Arcata, and it's so true, it just feels like home. I like to think of it as Homeboldt sooooo lovely. Thanks for sharing that Onederful place, Scott. Stay warm thru the coming storm 😺💜

I have an older van. This is year five full time for me. In the last couple of years I have had the engine and tranny replaced. Several people told me I would still have problems even with a new engine. Of course they are right. I spent an extra 3k over the top of the engine rebuild, and I am so happy about it. I got an upgraded battery, higher output alternator, new fuel injectors, new exhaust system, new fuel pumps, plus much more. Even though most of those parts were still good. Now they should last as long as the new engine. It is so much cheaper to get it all done at once. Than piece by piece on the road. I have three times as much money in my van then I can sell it for. But as you know having confendance in the mechanicals is so stress relieving. Best wishes and happy travels!

& Even though you have 3 times as much cash put into your van/home, it's your home and it's going to last you another several years now and I mean several. Not to mention, do you know how much a new vehicle cost nowadays?? They are Ripping people off left and right,, the prices are Astronomical these days.More computer electrical componentry to go wrong.. I'd rather have a semi-older vehicle and keep it going at almost whatever the cost.

Eucalyptus trees are a windbreaker to save the soil in your farm or garden. I lived in North Hollywood in the San Fernando Valley in the 1950's. Eucalyptus trees came from Australia. Look it up. Cindy

Google confirmed- Australians brought the Eucalyptus trees here(CA) and they were used as a windbreaker for farming. Those trees were planted in the 1850s and they help with our Santa Ana winds.🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐

I still love them. And yes, Cal Poly Humboldt is a university. Our SIL is the Cal Poly Humboldt bookstore manager. I loved your footage of Trinidad Head. We've hiked it many times. ❤ The baskets are crab pots. Fresh crab is amazing! We've had some lovely weather recently; I hope you got plenty of solar power. We always enjoy your videos. 😊

The trees in my neck of the woods are now bare thanks to that crazy rain storm last night. A little jealous seeing those red woods and greenery. I purchased a 1/2 pound of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee for pour-over at Porto Rico Imports in NYC, a local Italian coffee importer for over a hundred years. “Ethiopian coffees are known to possess a slightly spicy and almost “wine”-like flavor.” Can’t drink Dunkin’ Donuts anymore. What is Starbucks? I am now an official grown-up thanks to you. ☕️

I stay away from microfiber prefer 100 percent cotton including flannels. My favorite is expensive but look at The Company Store or The Vermont country store. I own both places sheets I have had for many many years.

Hi Scott I got my mineral 🐝 pan today got it seasoned and cooked two eggs and ham in it tonight no sticking 👍 thanks so much for the advice, love that heavy pan. WOW what a beautiful view with the sun 🌄 and those Sea stacks. I miss that whole area you are in. Crescent City has nice redwood trails also. And the best clam chowder in a sourdough bowl ever, at a restaurant called the chart room.

That is a beautiful park. Huge trees. My favorite city park is Hilo City Park in Hilo Hawaii. It's got Japanese style foliage and a little bridge over a creek. (I haven't been there in years, because it requires flying to visit.)

Scott you definitely made the right decision to drive south of Seattle . More sun and great views . I went to college of the redwoods and lived in Arcata at the time . There was always more sun in Arcata . It’s all a beautiful area .

I'll gladly tell you the story about eucalyptus as I have heard it. They are all over Northern California, at least near the coast. It was a scam brought over from Australia as amazing wood, meanwhile it burns too hot (and maybe shallow root trees also), and is invasive. Google it to see what others have to say, but so far that story makes complete sense. It's dangerous during fire season due to the fast light, and extra hot burn. Not the optimal choice for fire places.

My favorite is LA Papua coffee, and Starbucks stopped selling it 3 years ago. Trader Joe's used to selling it. LA Papua is the best coffee I've ever tasted. Yum yum, hmmm yum ☕️ Cindy

I enjoyed my coffee with this video. Scotty, what is your mental process while you sit and sip before starting your day’s activities? You’ve got me studying my calendar for time off to do a California trip. I missed my usual October getaway. We bought a house and it’s taking all my energy. I Should be settled by February 1st, then I’ll head out first to Tucson, then on to San Diego followed by a slow cruise up the coast into Oregon. ❤

I have a lot to say on the heater subject. I will say that if you have the power to run a diesel air heater, and you don’t mind drilling holes in your van, then you should seriously consider them

I'm in Vista, CA, near Oceanside, coastal north of San Diego, if you ever come south and want to borrow my carport. There's also a clubhouse with a shower a few feet away from my carport.

@ 24min. What a lovely beach. I'm wondering though.. is this one of those beaches that experiences rouge waves? That scares the begeesus out of me. Glad you took us further up the trail. What a view indeed!. Thanks for your efforts.

I’m not sure about rogue waves. None of these are swimming beaches from my perspective. Although a lot of people swim and surf here.
