Best known for his work with The Smiths, The Cranberries, and Blur, today we are talking with English music producer, Stephen Street!
Street began his musical career in the late 1970s playing in various bands in London. He then started at Island Records as an in-house assistant and then as an in-house engineer.
The Smiths and Morrissey
One of Street's first jobs as in-house engineer was for a session for The Smiths's "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now”. He then worked on their album Meat Is Murder, with Morrissey and Marr producing for the first time.
Street continued to work with The Smiths, working as an engineer on their album The Queen Is Dead before assuming a producer role for Strangeways, Here We Come, their final album.
After The Smiths broke up, Street worked with Morrissey as a producer and co-songwriter on his album Viva Hate. This album reached No. 1, spawning two top 10 hits in the UK. Street went on to co-write and produce two further singles for Morrissey which appeared on Bona Drag.
Blur
After hearing "She's So High", Blur's first single, Street contacted their manager. Soon after he produced their second single "There's No Other Way", although he did not produce the album as a whole. Street produced Blur's next four albums: Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape and Blur.
Street produced Blur's 2015 album The Magic Whip, their first since the band's reformation with Coxon.
The Cranberries
In 1992, Street started working with Irish band The Cranberries on their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?. The album turned out to be a huge success in the U.S. In 1994, Street worked with the band again on their second album No Need to Argue.
Street worked with the band on their fifth album Wake Up and Smell the Coffee and the two extra tracks that were recorded for their 2002 best of album Stars: "Stars" and "New New York".
Street also produced their sixth studio album Roses, released in 2012. He also produced their final album In the End, released in 2019.
In February 2020, it was announced Street will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at the upcoming Music Producer's Guild Awards.

*With The Smiths and more notably Morrissey changing-up producers on almost every album, I can honestly say that Mr. Street is still to this day the BEST producer of Morrissey's voice !!! He brought out something in Morrissey's vocals that no other producer has been able to do since then.*

Fairly sure it was Steve Albini who was behind that roomy sound on Surfer Rosa, even though Street mentioned Gil Norton as the producer. But Norton did great work with them on their later albums. Stephen Street is always a pleasure in these interviews. He seems to be a fan of the music just as much as we are, so he knows whats interesting info to the listener. Great upload! :)

Thanks for this interview Warren. I grew up in NYC and was introduced to British indie music (as some called it then) by a girl I met at CBGB when I was 15 in 1982. Wire, Joy Division & New Order, The Cure, Cabaret Voltaire, Sisters of Mercy and then The Smiths appeared and everything changed. At first everyone was with The Smiths til the hipsters fell out, but I love hearing the inside story of those times. And he worked with Massive Attack, wow! Love this interview!

Warren, many thanks for shining a light on this segment of guitar pop. For an American kid from the Midwest, the Britpop years saved my teens from the doldrums of middle America. This music is really more important in the lineage of guitar music than it has been credited here in the States by the press and various academies. It hues much closer to the Big Bang of popular music than what the official record may reflect to American audiences.

I thought at the time and still do that 'Girls and Boys' musically owed more to the Skids circa Days in Europe/ Goodbye Civilian. Also good to hear The Mighty Lemon Drops get a mention - such a shame they never made it as big as they should have. If you've ever heard an interview with Johnny Marr (The Smiths) you might notice Johnny and this bloke have the exact same way of speaking, mannerisms etc. Uncanny! (no surprise given they spent so much time together as youths)

If my record collection consisted of only music that Stephen Street was involved in... I'd probably do just fine... What a brilliant body of work. I'm still awestruck when I listen to Park Life and Modern Life is Rubbish. What the hell were they putting in the drinking water in the UK in the 70's, 80's and 90's?!? The guitar based bands during these decades created an astonishing number of incredible albums. I bet 90% of my music collection ( at least what I still listen to) hails from the UK. Can someone explain that?

Its in their blood. Brazilians know how to play football, jamaicans run faster, brits know how to produce something beautiful out of strumming 6 strings. Theres no other explanation

I was totally into the Smiths in my school days. Brilliant sound and such clever lyrics. Marr's dreamy guitar parts coupled with Morrissey's sarcastic barbs was just what I needed at the time. How Soon is Now was just so amazing and different. Thanks for an amazing interview with an icon. Do you know Bob Rock (personally I mean)? As a fellow Canuck I thought I would vote for him as a producer to hear from. He seems like a very humble and talented fellow.

Very nice! I worked with Stephen for a couple of days when I was at the Townhouse. I think I emailed you during that time, actually, it was with that band Gene. Unfortunately, I was a last resort as far as assistants went, as everyone else was ill and I was only the runner. I think the comment that came back was, "He's a nice guy, but he doesn't know very much." I think that's the subtitle to my autobiography!

Also, re: Andy Rourke's bass lines. Melody?! You bet your arse, they had more melody than Morrissey's vocals!

Another brill video, many thanks. Wouldn’t have minded if it was The Smiths and only! I would have asked him about “Last night I dreamt..” I took that record back to the shop because I thought it had a fault, that strange drum timing, when I got the cd I realised it was intentional .
