I'm one of the thousands of people who can call Pat a friend. The man remembers everything! Everyone he's ever played with, every place he's ever played, restaurants, friends, acquaintances--it's astounding. And his genuineness and generosity are also highly noteworthy! For a long time, I didn't know Pat, then one day while I was picking out tunes on KZfaq to simply listen and enjoy, I came across the video for Mayor of Simpleton. The video had credits, where Pat was listed as the Beatman (or something like that) and I was intrigued, because it was classic XTC but with this powerful groove relentless throughout, totally pro, you can hear it. Once the name was in my head, I would listen out in case I heard, 'Mastelotto' again. I did, again and again. Then, years later, I went to see Crimson in Cardiff St Davids Hall, in their latter incarnation, with Reiflin, Mastelotto and Harrison, but I wasn't even aware that there were 3 drummers, until I turned up at the gig, and saw the three kits at the front of the stage. It was mindblowing. Hey, I'm sure pro's get more picky about such things, but what I heard was all the classic older tunes, reinvigorated for the 21st century, nothing lacking and nothing over-played. Tight as a gnats chuff, perfect drumming from all three players, in fact all players delivered, and the PA and hall acoustics were superb. Must have been great for Pat to play those tunes he grew up with, it was one of the best gigs ever

I still hope that XTC will release Pat's audition someday; the band videotaped all the auditions, and Pat had Andy and Colin going, calling out one old XTC song after another. I've heard it was an almost 3-hour jam.

hate to be the critic.....(and I didn't see the 3-drummer KC so I may be talking out my behind)........but THREE drummers sounds like the LEAST intelligent idea ever. (Add to this how unique their kits were so their airline freight bill must be offensive! Yikes!) Instead of ONE KILLER KC drummer.......you'd have THREE drummers all holding back and being "polite" and "tentative"......and you'd triple your weekly bills! (No wonder Fripp struggled to make a profit for 60 years!) IF I WERE FRIPP's MANAGER.......(that should be a Op-Ed column, ha ha)......I'd have said "You can have your 3 drummers.....but ONLY in the studio -- not for touring". I'd then book a comfy rehearsal space for a month.....and you set up 3 drummers and whatever else you want ..........and you FILM / RECORD (with some candles or nice lighting) THOUSANDS of improvs with this expanded "chamber group". Voila! You now have 30 new KC albums / DVDs to sell over the next decade.........(and improvs should exploit "Art-Science": drummer 1 starts the first improv....D2 the second.....D3 the 3rd.....Levin the 4th.....Mel Collins the 5th....and so on. If anything stinks, you can edit it out! WIN / WIN / WIN / WIN / WIN / WIN / WIN. (Plus none of them are getting younger so why not record THOUSANDS of improv albums in a flash?) "FOR EACH TOUR.....YOU ONLY GET AN AVANT-POWER TRIO, frippy! This saves 99% of touring costs!" I'd also book the decorated Rehearsal Space (or Belew's house?) ("no singing in this version, Adrian!") and have it be FRIPP + a revolving door of INCREDIBLE musicians from around the world........so....it's like the NEXT 15 versions of KING CRIMSON.....but all recorded in one month! EASY! (Fuck prog rock! I want more 'PROV Rock!! Improv is fun and dangerous in a way composed stuff isn't!) (Took Tangerine Dream 45 MINUTES to make a great 45 minute LP!!! How's that for efficiency?) EX: I book 8 hours of improv recording / filming where it's FRIPP / Thomas Lang / and, say, Adam Wakeman (Rick's kid!) --- BOOM! You cranked out at least 4 instrumental LPs of greatness! (DVDs too) NEXT DAY, 8 hours of FRIPP / Benny Greb / Trey Gunn. Next day is FRIPP / Billy Sheehan / Buckethead / Billy Cobham! Next day is FRIPP and 2 or 3 or 4 other brilliant musicians who Fripp never played with. I'm getting the impression that EFFICIENCY beat up Fripp as a boy! (Why ELSE would he despise Efficiency?) (He's got like $200,000 in rack gear etc just for his GUITAR.....and any SMART PHONE could replace it all, and maybe be cheaper to fly it around the globe!) (And he uses like 1% of his excessive gear's potential.) I was very sad to hear his 3-drummer KC was mostly a Vegas LEGACY-act, playing almost entirely OLD STUFF. That's not what Crimson means to most of us. We want DARING INNOVATION and surprises! PS: this week I've been listening to 1970s UK art-rockers CAMEL (terrible name alert!)........cuz their drummer does some pretty cool stuff!

Great interview on all sides! Good delivery. Kept my interest non-stop. New respect for Pat because, man, I did not know about all the other stuff from the beginning that lead up to KC. Loved this interview. Never met him, but he's been a neighbor of mine for a while. One time about 15 years ago, I was receiving a delivery of Yamaha drums to my home and noticed one of the boxes had Pat's name. I told the driver, hey man, this one goes to another drummer. Do you who this guy is? There I was in my driveway singing "Broken Wings" to a delivery driver. He had no clue and I felt very old all of a sudden. LOL

Great interview. In opening for the Stickman In PA , I had a wonderful drummer to drummer talk with Pat. He was impressed I owned the Roland Handsonic 15 he uses to this day. Pat is also a electronic wiz as he shared how he customized his Linn Drum to tweak the sounds. He also burned sounds into the Eprom. As I recall he used that machine on The Mister Mister tracks. That takes some super Mr Science skills. Pat being a humble fellow said it was no big deal. On stage we discussed our Handsonics as lads talking about our custom cars. We had discovered the hidden bits these Handsonic beasts sonically can do. It was great seeing the Handsonic promentley placed in his kit. I asked him to sign my Remo djembe head, being he highly respects instruments he offered to sign a CD instead. I explained my Remo head is on its last legs and I'd be honored to have his energy grace the drum. Without hesitation he took a sharpie and signed the head with a nice message to me. He then gave me 2 signed CD's as well ! As much mind blowing music history Pat has experienced, he is a most enjoyable down home fellow. Before we parted he asked "hey if you ever want to sell your Roland let me know." I said thanks for the offer however Im quite fond of the 15 even more than my kidney." We both laughed knowing the MMPB ( Musician Madness Priority Belief) Example.. Dr. "Sir if you don't have the operation you may die." Insane musician " I know I know Doc, but I gotta get that new Les Paul on sale and.. you said may die not, will die" Doc..Arrrgh Goodnite folks

Me & Trey's girlfriend at the time were the only 2 people dancing to all the lovely odd time signatures. Once you can feel those grooves, it's impossible not to dance to that kind of musical excellence. We were probably the only females too, maybe a couple of others hiding in the corners. I know, right? This needed to be 3+ hours. MOST interviews I see on YT....i and everyone say "We'd like 3 or MORE hours of this!" --- and even the celebs being interviewed often say "oh, is that it??" (one hour interviews are too short for most interesting interviewees) Even if you watch those "Roundtables" with movie stars on YT all hanging out and shooting the shit......these A-LISTERS don't want it to end, cuz they too LOVE hanging with celebs and hearing funny stories from movie shoots etc! (Never do A-list celebs just get to hang out and goof around with OTHER A-lister celebs. Being a celebrity is especially LONELY.) Ditto Bill Maher's "Club Random" --- he's getting baked with other celebs! And you give us only 1 HOUR of interview??? Argh. PLEASE, Warren.....try to make these longer! You're all gonna be dead within a few years (GRIM!!!).......so NOW is the time for Operation Milk This Shit! XOXOXO

I never understood why bruford had to have another drummer. Thrak was at one time my favorite album. I was getting deep into music at the time. I appreciate the double trio yes but it seemed to fall short of itself. When i expected more i got nothing. When expecting nothing a profound statement. Anywho big fan. Mastelotto seems to give great interviews. I look forward to listening to him more. Power to believe stuff is so under rated. Great musician here.

Pat seems like a really cool dude. There's this one Time i saw him playing with Stick Men in this venue that was designer More for having small orchestras or classical ensambles, anyway so It had a place on the back for the choir and they sold tickets for those Places, so i had Tony Levin Markus and Pat almost at hand reach, i almost lose my mind! the concert was fantastic and at the end of the gig he reached Out and handed me one of His Gavin Harrison signature drum sticks. That Is a fantastic memory that i'll cherish untill the day i die.

For me Pat, Steve Jansen and Yukihiro Takahashi (R.I.P) are the drummers that really capture the electronic/acoustic vibe best. Just wonderful drummers that embrace the hybrid concept of drum machines/electric and acoustic kits.

Wow, what a career. Pages are huge for me. They had that schmultzy, Steely Dan, Yacht Rock thing going on. I can’t believe I’m not familiar with this guy. I absolutely love XTC and King Crimson. I kind of felt like Mr. mister was a more radio friendly, less fusiony and cornier version of Pages, but musicians gotta eat, right?

I wonder if bands play little clubs like The Baked Potato because the small venue is grounding. It's not about spectacle there, just the music. There's no room for anything else.

MACHINE PRODUCED A CRIMSON RECORD?!?!?! Never expected to hear him say he was listening to SQUAREPUSHER!!!! This is too crazy! Machine is great, but I can’t say I like Hed P.E.’s music. If Machine did one of their records, it probably had a good production though.
