The best story about this cover is Dave was playing a big show where Dylan was closing the show. So of course Dave didn’t play this song. When he came off Bob asked him why he didn’t sing it, and Dave said it was his song! Bob said he didn’t put it in his set list cause he loved Dave’s version. So Dave came out and played it with him to close out the show.

Dave’s versions of Watchtower are amazing because he takes a song and makes it a story. Beginning middle end while always building up and up. Love to be a part of this song live. I’ve seen them over thirty times. It’s always amazing. The Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA.

Man I have been telling people for years to check Dave out. They always think of the soft radio hits, but they don’t know about this type of balls to the wall jamming. Great reaction, you don’t stop it every other second like the others do.

DMB, not really my jam. But I saw that old Central Park DVD way back in the day, and the version of this they played on that set caused me to give huge respect to these guys afterwards. Everyone in the band is crazy good and Dave is a fantastic frontman. Not a show I'd seek out, but one I'd absolutely go to if the opportunity arose. Be worth it just to watch Carter play drums 😆

I believe this is from Live at Piedmont Park in Atlanta GA 2007. This and Central Park are great versions of the song!

Correct. Stefan plays a solo into Star Spangled Banner at the Central Park concert.

This was a "donate what you can"" show in Central Park. The band was trying to keep the NYS public school district to continue funding the music programs that were defunded after 9/11. Great Show!!!!

I absolutely love this reaction and the excitement for the live music. ❤ I know this may be kinda far fetched for a reaction, possible too much editing involved.. but would love it if someone did a comparison between the original by Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and then Dave Matthews Band. They are all 3 different arrangements that somehow give a different perspective/insight to the lyrics. Kind of incredible IMO. I haven't seen a comparison on YT yet. 😉

Yeah I've always thought it shows how great these simple Dylan songs were. All three of those versions are great, and many others have covered this too. I love DMB but the Jimi Hendrix version is the definitive one.

Yes this is not Central Park. The Central Park concert, opened with an awesome guitar driven Star Spangled Banner. It was beautiful.

I saw Zepplin in Oakland in 1977 I’ve seen The Who Elton John Genesis rush on and on this is the best live band ever mic drop.

I’m late to the party but for another spectacular version of DMB playing this song, check out Gorge ‘22 with Celisse. She guests on the vocals and her soulful voice and absolute shredding the guitar take it to another level

This is not from the Central Park Concert. The bass player does a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of the Central Park version.

Named my kid after him and the mom adopted him out without my knowledge. Can't find her or the kid. The family that she adopted him out to changed his name. Cruel world. Nowhere to turn for help either. Would be happy to raise him.
