The HO scale Royal Hudson from Rapido Trains is the subject of this review by Dan Cortopassi. Canadian Pacific received special permission to use the British royal coat of arms on some of their 4-6-4 locomotives, earning the name "Royal Hudsons". This is the first model steam locomotive from Rapido! Dan's locomotive is decorated as British Columbia 2860. Dan talks about the model's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards. He even demonstrates how to swap out one of the main drivers for one without traction tires! CP fans won't want to miss this one!

Finally, an exploded parts page with a listing of the parts, numbered for reordering if ever needed. It's just too bed it doesn't have a smoke unit! For the price, I would prefer an Steam Locomotive model that smoked.

Great review there; very thorough! I had noticed the tilting tender on mine, and wasn't sure if it was a one-off or not (for mine at any rate, it seemed to be because the power wire on the rear truck had its insulating cover mushroom out and get stuck on the hole into the tender; dunno if it might be the same for you, but on the front truck). Any way, I felt like pointing out a thing or two; not to put down your review in any way, just one or two things I have yet to hear in video reviews about the loco and that I think other viewers might be interested to know. For one thing, it's actually got two separate speaker set-ups. You've got speakers in the tender for a louder sound, but you can flip a switch on the underside of the tender and the sound (albeit quieter due to technical limitations) will actually come out of the smokebox! How's that for prototypical? :P Rapido also included their trademark "silly sounds", which in this case are the Canadian National Anthem and a recording of King George VI giving a speech during his Canadian visit. One final thing, that I think few people in the Western Hemisphere know: the Royal Hudson is in fact Rapido's SECOND steam loco! Their first one is a British loco, the Stirling Single built for Locomotion Models. Again, great review, and hope you like yours as much as I'm liking mine!
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I haven't played around with every single function key so I haven't heard the speech, though I'm not surprised given Rapido's tendency to do that. I missed the sound switch, too. Thanks for pointing that out. And you're right, I wasn't aware of the UK prototype engine. Thanks for watching!

2860 has 2 whistles. The original superheated steam CPR one is in the stack and the saturated steam Bob Swanson whistle on the boiler.

This is an impressive looking steam locomotive, too bad it is not equipped with a smoke unit, especially considering the model's massive price tag of $700.

I actually think there has been an unforeseen manufacturing/design flaw with this engine, I wonder if Rapido even realized it because when you look on their website they have images off the different paint schemes and version of the Royal Hudson. 2860 is clearly shown with a whistle mounted on the side of the boiler where you said it should be, but your delivered model has it mounted behind the smoke stake like the rest. Seems unusual for Rapido to miss that in the design phase, but looks like it slipped under the radar some how until final production without being noticed. I'm sure they probably won't be happy when they realize that mistake, but its such a minor detail, yet a detail Rapido would be very good about having, that makes it shocking to see it go unnoticed until after delivery. First steam engine from them so I guess minor issues like this are better then major issues with the model, good chance when they decided to make another run of these, it will be fixed.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 4 жыл бұрын
Someone else pointed out that 2860 actually has two whistles, one behind the stack as on the model. I didn't know that when I did the review. I do research the models but I didn't find that particular tidbit. Rapido is usually very exacting with their details, so it is odd that they missed this one. At least it's something that could be added on fairly easily, without having to do any major work to such a beautiful model. Thanks for watching!

I do need to knit-pick your whistle comments just a tad. 2860, since its restoration in 1974, actually has two whistles. The original CPR whistle is located behind the stack in the bathtub housing just as it is on this model. The large whistle on the engineer's side of the boiler was added during restoration. Though I agree it would have been nice to see it added to the BC Rail 2860 version. The two whistles can be heard in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8dmfLajmtXanGQ.html The first two clips feature the 1974 "Swason" whistle whereas the clip starting at 1:20 features the original CPR "Mountain" whistle.

I wonder why Rapido went with driving all 6 wheels with gears instead of functional rods
@BATTRAIN1
@BATTRAIN1 4 жыл бұрын
I believe it is because the rods are "scale" size and thus cannot handle the force. People need to be careful not to grab the loco at the rods as they will bend easily. If you want high-quality scale you need to be careful with it if you can't handle with care get a train set quality loco.

Your tractive effort test is not correct. Locos don't pull trains with their wheels spinning all the time. 'Static friction' (i.e., no wheel slippage) is far higher than 'sliding friction.' Next time, measure drawbar pull BEFORE the wheels begin to spin.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 4 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, though I'm not sure how I would go about measuring it. I have to hold the engine in a static position, because I don't have enough room to let it go. The test I do is intended as a comparison, to give people an idea about how much pulling power a model has. Eventually when I have my layout running I may include real world tests to see how many cars an engine can actually pull. Thanks for the info and for watching!
