The questions I ask myself in my template list:
==========================================================
Theme of today
3 Primary Tasks (2 hours each)
1.
2.
3.
Chores and other tasks
What’s my day look like? (so I don’t make things too hard!) Also these are just notes, not instructions (they are above)
What are the things that could go wrong today? (and list how I will plan to avoid them)
Journal
End of day
What got done, what didn’t get done? and why? what tasks took what amount of time?

Wow thank you Allan! The trick of noting everything about where I stopped working and what needs to be done next for the next day, worked well for me! Got up in the morning and hit the ground running. It´s true! I wasted so much time every morning trying to figure out what to do.

Thank you so much for taking the time to create this for other aspiring VFX Artist... I can't tell you how many methods I have gone through to increase my productivity for my work as a VFX Artist Freelancer. Too many times I have over or under calculated certain shots would take to create for clients or I'll dedicate all of my time to work and non for my chores, which end up piling up and eventually get to a point where I have no choice but to tackle them and then screws up my schedule lol

This is awesome, wish I watched this video years ago. Especially love the idea of estimating the time a task will take and comparing that to how long it actually took at the end of the day. Going to make this a new template on my Notion and get started today!

Awesome man! I'm still a paper person for creative writing just not for organizing my day - which took practice to switch. There's something I find enjoyable about writing on paper over everything being on computer But for staying organized this definitely is not effective

Thanks for share, that's was a nice lecture on productivity for cgi artsist. It's always interesting to see how creating person ogranize their work. I myself stick to Habitica for shortterm and Evernote for reports and journaling. But it's more personal and less organized. Your system seems far superior and work-related. I'll dig into it later on. P.S. Btw have you read all of these book on the background?)

I am Beginner like almost 6 months working in Maya and little bit of other softwares....I would love to implement this method as i have tried many different methods like setting up daily goals in diary, hanging a white board but it didn't worked out for me......I hope I can keep this thing running.....Thanks Allan......by the way are you going to do the LAS next year also?

I tried using Google Tasks, and Keep, because I am so tied into G-suite. I feel like the calendar needs a lot of work. Asana is good for teams, Which is the most common for Games and VFX Google or Microsoft? I like your method though to lay it all out then prioritize and self evaluate. I was wondering whether to track just a project task or each project individually. Thanks, Allan for the template!

I think software companies could help speed up work flow. 3dmax 2021 you can now set up hdri lightning with a few clicks. And the viewport display is almost the same as a render, big help. Better integration between packages without the need for exporting obj or fbx that work ( no added cost). oh and get out of bed.

Thanks for sharing Allan, your content is always great. I do have a question regarding the choice of a 3D tool. I know that you have discussed the topic in some of your previous videos, but its always helpful. I am a Technical Artist creating Real Time Graphics in my full time job mainly using Maya/Unity, but in my free time I do VFX and 3D design in general and I struggle using Maya as a freelance tool. Is it possible to get some information from you regarding the tools for a freelancer, as it is much different situation than working for a studio having all of their plugins/tools at your disposal? Thanks a lot!

how to measure productivity as a beginner vfx artist? I spent so much time learning before trying to apply something in a project, and it gets frustrating sometimes
@AllanMcKay
@AllanMcKay 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vitor, first - set goals. Set goals with dates. As I mention above, what gets measured gets managed. You will be much more frustrated if you can't tell if you're making progress, or why you're not getting the results you want. If I were you I would set goals for the type of stuff you want to learn, in the form of actual results. So if they are shots - decide on a single shot you want to work on, and then start looking for training that is going to aid you in accomplishing that shot. Rather than trying to learn xyz topics. You'll not only end up with a finished shot, but you'll also start asking the right questions on what you need to know to make progress. On top of this, by having goals and a timeline, you'll push yourself to move forward quicker, and see yourself making the progress each day. If I were to learn to program, I could go learn the fundamentals and continue to learn and learn and learn, and the fact is I will never run out of material on how to learn to code. But if I told myself "I want to make a program to copy these files to this directory" I'm going to start asking myself the right questions, looking for specific bits of information, and eventually having a program that works, and I can then build on that or I can then look for another topic to learn. But it's the only way to learn at the end of the day. What gets measured gets managed, have timelines and goals in mind so you can track your progress and have some sense of direction. Otherwise learning anything is infinite and you'll never feel satisfied. I choose always to learn "just in time" rather than "just in case". I hope that helps

Hi Allan, I just turned 16 and am hungry and aspiring to become a VFX artist, I hope to learn as much as i can in these 2 years of school and then get a job at 18 in VFX, do you think this is possible if I put in enough time everyday? If so, what advice would you give me? I'm struggling to narrow down what I learn to efficiently learn what I need to learn, I guess right now I just want to learn how to be a generalist (modelling animating texturing rigging etc..) is this the right move?

Hey Allan, I was curious how you go about preparing / fixing models to be watertight and be ready for destruction. I think this topic is really missing from the internet astonishingly. Like let’s say I download a sweet looking spaceship model from Turbosquid or downloaded a cool looking model pack from a website, how do we go about fixing / preparing a model to be ready to go if it isn’t ready. Maybe showing off some of this information would be helpful.
