Ballistol is not a better version of WD-40. WD-40 is for cleaning, Ballistol is for oiling. WD-40 actually get's rid of oil and is not made for lubrication or rust prevention. A lot of people still don't seem to know this and actually "oil" stuff with WD-40.

WD-40 is for removing water. It literally stands for "water displacement, formula 40." You're right that it's not a lubricant though, and that Ballistol is not interchangeable with WD-40.

Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant. Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product's formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.

Exactly why it's used to remove copper fouling in gun barrels
@Meight50five
@Meight50five Жыл бұрын
@a yes, but there is also copper and copper based metals in gun parts and frames. So one must be careful when using it, even in firearms that don't necessarily look like they have it. It is very commonly used as a substrate for nickel and chrome plating firearms, and if there is any blemish, scratch or chip in the plating that reveals the copper underneath, it can start eating away at the copper and exacerbate the damage.

I recently had a go at making my own penetrating oil with 10w and some old turpentine substitute (white spirit). I've mainly used it to derust stuff and protect it, not remove seized bolt/screws. It's more a cleaner and corrosion inhibitor with a little lubricating ability than a penetrating oil (it's a CLP). It is unchlorinated mineral oil with alkaline salts of oleic acid (along with some alcohols). That doesn't make for a good penetrating oil. It will act as a lubricant (lubricants are not penetrating oils) but unlike a true penetrating oil it lacks the methyl esters (typically from soy) that really help free stuck fasteners. To understand more about CLPs check out MIL-L-63460 and MIL-L-372. Some love Hoppe’s Number 9, some love Break-free and some are all about Ballistol...but nobody is using penetrating oil on their guns.
