It's EZ to assign E and Z absolute configuration to alkenes. Guess which convention we get to use? Cahn-Ingold-Prelog is back! Don't forget, zee zame zide. You have to say it with a German accent, or you lose points on the quiz.

The E/Z nomeclature is the first thing in chemistry I saw where it helps to speak german :D And thank you very much, there aren't any good videos about organic chemistry in german ;) And btw, the way you pronounce "entgegen" sounds very authentic but the Z in "zusammen" is a bit too soft (as it often is used in the englisch language), but in german language, it sounds more like "tsusammen" if you know what I mean :D

Some of the other youtube videos that exist out there simplify it a little too much and I still don’t understand the complicated terminology that my professor/ book uses, but you use that nomenclature while still giving an in-depth explanation making it easy to understand!

Thank you for the very helpful video! I now understand how to assign E and Z configuration! Do you have any suggestions for determining when a product demonstrates neither configuration? My textbook swears this is a thing, but I can't seem to figure out how anything could be neither E nor Z.
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 9 жыл бұрын
Sally P the only way E/Z wouldn't apply would be if an alkene is monosubstituted or completely unsubstituted. as long as there is at least one substituent on each carbon, E/Z can be assigned.

Professor, @4:32 you said that carbon was bonded to 2 other carbons and a hydrogen, I'm probably wrong but I see it bonded to 1 carbon the cis-hydrogen and an implied hydrogen making that point also a tie forcing you to look at the iodine and therefore making it an E alkene as well. Someone please help.
