Even though Rush’s rock contemporaries were embracing radio-friendly sounds and even kowtowing to the disco movement, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neal Peart remained true to their sound and the record proved to be a critical turning point… one that ushered in a new decade of innovation and even commercial accessibility, with one of the most ambitious songs the band ever tackled. Today, we’re diving deep into a pivotal album from one of the most iconic bands of the rock era. I’m talking about the record Permanent Waves from progressive rock masterminds: Rush! And from this must-have album, we’re telling the story of Freewill. So let’s get into it. During the turbulent music scene of the late 70s, Rush stood firm against the changing tides. As the ever-evolving musical landscape shifted from rock to punk to post-punk and new wave, bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer Neil Peart refused to trade their artistic integrity for the commercial rewards of the latest trends. No, this triumphant trio remained firmly fixed on their own path of rock innovation.
There was no Rush equivalent of Kiss’s ‘I Was Made for Lovin’ You” or the Rolling Stones’ Miss You… both of which tapped into disco to have greater mainstream appeal. In October 1978, Rush released their sixth studio album, ‘Hemispheres.’ It was another classic entry into Rush’s catalog of long-form, highly conceptual epic LPs… an approach that would make up much of Rush’s 70s output. We’re talking side-consuming, 20-minute tracks that stimulated the mind and imagination in a way that few others could. For instance, 1975’s Caress of Steel had The Fountain of Lamneth clocking in at 19 minutes and 57 seconds.
1976’s 2112 had its title track, which reached 20 minutes and 34 seconds. 1977’s A Farewell to Kings scaled things back with two 10 to 11-minute tracks. And then Hemispheres upped the ante again with an 18-minute and 8-second Side One saga: Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres. However, by the time Rush completed its run through the 70s exhaustion was setting in. The band had written, recorded, and released six albums in the space of four and half years, and kept plowing ahead with a rigorous touring schedule.

In 9th grade I dated a guy who was obsessed with Rush. He had an amazing stereo system in his car and Rush was always playing. To this day, over 4 decades later, I think of Scott every time I hear Rush and I'm 15 again and we're back in that little red suped up Datsun 510 cruising the town with Rush blasting. LOL! 😃

I did too! 20 years later, I was working at a grocery store pharmacy, and one morning, "Tom Sawyer" was playing on the overhead speakers. An elderly woman said, "What is with this music?" and I said, "Oh, that's the channel the overnight crew likes; they haven't switched it to the daytime channel yet." I then added, "This song was popular when I graduated from high school, and I've seen this band in concert 4 times."

I graduated in 1980, and Rush was quite popular amongst some of my friends. One friend when he needed to wake up the entire house, he would play “I Think I am Going Bald” at around 120db. It worked, but when I hear that song, I look to break a record player.😂

Another member of the Class of '81. I went to my first concert the year before. It was the Permanent Waves tour, and was the first of many Rush concerts for me. I was introduced to Rush a few weeks before that show by listening to the 2112 album. I was an instant fan, and have never waivered in my belief that Rush is the greatest group of musicians ever assembled. Rush provided a soundtrack for 40+ years of my life, and I still listen to them all the time.

Hi, Adam. 4 year subscriber here. Just enjoyed watching this with my 15 year old stepdaughter, who has been obsessed with Rush for over a year now. The 3 of us went out as Rush last Halloween! I've seen every show since 96, almost 94 but I didn't know that you could get good seats day of show from the box office back then, I was used to sold out Metallica and maiden concerts so I didn't even try. My rehearsal studio was a mile away from the venue and I thought about it, but regretfully didn't try. I was at the last show at the forum at least, and at least 2x for every tour leg between 1996 and 2015, 2 times bicostal. Mostly at San Diego sports arena and coors amphitheater, and Irvine meadows

Subdivisions also carries huge meaning for me. That song rings so effing true for a suburb kid who grew up outisde of a big city who often felt the suburbs offered no charms to sooth my restless dreams of youth. I gravitated to the city seeking excitement and opportunity. I found it and it almost destroyed me.

My first Star Wars memory was 1980, Empire Strikes Back, of course. A friend invited me to the theater who had an extra ticket. I had no idea what I was in for. Well, that movie blew me away and got me into sci-fi fantasy for life, as well as a major Star Wars fan for life. Fast forward a few years later, another friend invited me to see a concert, again, this friend had an extra ticket. Never been to a concert, my music taste at the time was still top 40, I thought rock and roll was stupid… yeah. Well, ok, since it was free for me, I took up the invite. The band I saw for my first concert ever, the band I’ve never really heard of before, was… Rush. I believe Hold Your Fire had just been released (based on my memory when I went to that concert). Again, I was absolutely blown away. And again, that concert turned me into a Rock and Roll fan for life, with Rush leading the way ever since.

I had the same thing happen with me and Jethro Tull. I was a hardcore metal fan in my angry youth and I got two tickets to Tull @ New Haven Coliseum. When Ian hit that flute it was magical. That led me to bands like Rush and I've been a fan ever since.

When I was about 14 I was at this popular hangout where kids would go to party and show off their 4 wheelers to tackle this sand hill. At the top of the hill I found this 8 track half buried in the sand called Hemispheres. I had never heard of Rush before. Man, I was totally blown away and Was hooked. As they say, one man’s loss is another man’s treasure.

8-track tapes were my first format for listening to music. They often failed in weird and spectacular ways. That your "found" tape was actually playable after its ordeal is amazing. I hope you were able to get a new copy before your tape player ate the other one! 😁

That lyric "If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice" carries so much meaning for me. Rush was the music I listened to during my adult formative years, 17-25 yrs old, and it helped shape the person I became. Freewill was instrumental (pun not intended) in forming my personal philosophy. When I hear it to this day, I thrill with the sense of freedom and possibility that marked those years in my young life. Long live Rush, one of the best of all time.

The interlude on "Freewill", which we would normally consider a guitar solo, turned out to be a virtuoso performance by all three members. Alex's soulful yet complex lead guitar is up in the mix, of course, but it doesn't overshadow the blistering pace and throbbing rhythm of Neil and Geddy, respectively. When Neil passed away in 2020, this song was the one I posted on Facebook to explain the band's impact.

"Time stand still" is one of the goofiest videos, for a very profound song. I loved it when it came out, but now as a grandpa who has lost loved ones and seen the world change in unbeleivable ways, it brings a tear to my eye. You! Youngster, stop and look around you now! Fellow time traveler here, and Rush fan. Rush’s music in my cassette walkmans through the 80s brought exactly what you’re saying here to my attention, and though like the band I was also inside reading instead of partying, my life’s adventure still unfolds while everyone I used to know has in fact changed for the worse or died. Being a survivor, I’m voluntarily immersed in the blue-collar world, driving forklifts and sometimes playing Rush songs in my mind’s eye - making choices, choosing freewill. Oswald Spengler, Baruch Spinoza, and Tom Sawyer would approve ☕️

I was a kid sitting in the back seat of my parent's car. As we're riding down Venice Blvd, this song was on the radio. I leaned forward and asked " What's a douche?" My Dad laughed, but my Mom reached over and turned the radio off. So I asked again. I was told to be quiet. Now I had mind control on my Mom. She told me to hush, I'd shut up. But as soon as she turned the radio back on I started asking questions again. " What's a love gun?" 😅

My first ever exposure to Rush was seeing them live. It was the summer I was going into 8th grade and my father and one of his friends took me to see the Snakes and Arrows tour. I had never even heard of Rush before that. I didn’t really want to go, but my dad basically forced me. We’re both drummers and he promised me I wouldn’t regret going. For nearly 4 straight hours, I was mesmerized by The Professor. My beliefs of what someone could do on a drum kit were forever changed. Thank you Neil. We miss you.

I went to Neil's life celebration in St Katherine's a few years back. It was postponed many times because of covid. It was really powerful to see and be with many that were and continue to be inspired by the words, concepts and music. I was able to make a walking meditation labirynth at Lake Side Park and the organizers did an alright job it was nice. Thank you so much organizers!!!!!!!!! Some great moments to hear from friends and family. One guy played a medley of many old tunes on acoustic guitar and a bunch of us sang all the words with brilliant nostalgia. One played "subdivisions" with a tape recording of neil saying "subdivisions" that was moving. However, there was one moment that really bothers me to this day. Kind of embarrasses me as a fanof their art and a person who holds great respect for all three of them. One of Neils's friends was on video telling a personal story about their time together, and a bunch of drunk fans started booing...?!?1? seriously. This is the kind of selfish cruelty that some fans do which probably inspired Neil into privacy is really a pathetic expression of dysfunctional emotional regulation. Bunch of primates...but I digress... The booing got so bad that the organizers stopped the video!!!!! SMH. Still would love to hear the rest of the story. I forgot which friends of his was talking and yeah it was a long story maybe 10 minutes but fuck guys!!!! this is why we came to hear the stories SMH Anyway, any of you go to the celebration? Did you head over to Lake Side Park/ there was a gathering there that weekend at the Neil Peart Pavillian. It was a great celebratory weekend. I was a little bummed that Geddy, and Alex didn't show up though I completely understand the need for privacy. now I look forward to Another great drummer with Alex and Geddy playing at the SPhere in Las Vegas with amazing animation and storytelling for the greats: Fountain of Lamneth, cygnus x-1/hemispheres, the necromancer, and the four part "trilogy" of Fear....o.k. o.k........you can stop dreaming now....... At the moment, here in the Midwest, we have a great cover band called the Rush Tribute Project. They do a really decent job respecting the authenticity of the art.

I saw Rush live for the first time on the Clockwork Angels tour. To say I was blown away is an understatement. My favourite song from that album is The Garden, and after Neil passed those words took on a whole new meaning. RIP Professor ❤

Hey Adam, RUSH, definitely an incredible band. In working as a stage and instrument tech in Canada and on tour, I was lucky to meet Alex's old Guitar tech, and was able to get into two shows of their later tours. And I can tell you that experiencing RUSH on an album is incredible, but experiencing RUSH live, is a total different experience. To sum it up, MIND BLOWING. The reason for this is because in most cases with most recordings on album's, the recordings have been recorded and spliced (taped) together to make the final copy of a song on an album. That is typically the way most recordings are done, and that's always been the way it's been done. The difference with RUSH is that most of their recordings were straight recordings because Neil, Geddy, and Alex were so tighly wound together musically and as one unit, and so well practiced and disciplined, that they would have each song completely worked out so well that when they would record, most of their songs in one take of the floor, and then add overlayed dubs which was rarely ever needed for their recordings before the final cleanup of the recording before being mastered for pressing. But again because of their level of professionalism, there really wasn't much to clean up, as there is on most albums. LIVE, they sound even better than the recordings, which is opposite of most bands. RUSH, it didn't matter where they were playing or recording, their professionalism in writing and rehearsing was far above many bands in their approach, and it's that very difference about Neil, Geddy, and Alex, they were always like that from the beginning unlike most bands that get better in doing that with each recording they do in the studio. RUSH was always seriously disciplined about their writing, music, recording, and performances, with their live performances always the best version of themselves as a band, and that always showed. They didn't have all kinds of glitz and glam, pyro, flash bangs, backing tracks, to make their live concerts incredible, they already were incredible. It was sad when the guys announced the last tour because of Neil having really terrible carpal tunnel problems with his arms, but all the fans held out hope that they would come out of retirement like so many other bands. But their bond as friends and respect for each other and concern for Neil held strong, even now. Us fans of RUSH, held out that hope for one more, even small tour, until we heard that Neil had passed away, which was heartbreaking on many levels. And we all knew then, that there would never be another RUSH album or tour, that the door had been finally closed on one of the greatest bands to come out of Canada as well as one of the greatest bands to exist world over. Thank You Alex, Geddy, and Neil, (rest in peace), for all of the incredible music and concerts. There will never be another RUSH, and that's ok because we already had the best RUSH there was ever going to be. Matt - Toronto, Canada

In 1976, I was 12 years old. My big brother put an enormous set of headphones on my head and handed me the gatefold album for 2112 as I sat down on the corner of his bed. He gently placed the needle on the record and I began my swift initiation of becoming a RUSH fan.... I listened to every note, every screech, and every drum fill... while reading every single lyric and word I could find. It changed my life and I never looked back. RUSH became the gold standard for intelligent rock music.

That we all love the music from Jr. High & High School..& I DO STILL LOVE The Stones & Zeppelin & Humble Pie & Skynyrd & ZZ & Zappa & The Brothers & ACDC & ORIGINAL Sabbath & Aerosmith & Heart & KISS...all that good stuff. & yeah I guess the one with Limelight & Tom Sawyer is probably my most played Rush ALBUM BUT even now after what 50 YEARS ?? that FIRST SONG we heard & LOVED Working Man...THAT one REMAINS my favorite RUSH song. I realize there's no Neil but that one STILL moves me. KILLER song. I NEVER did see them live but I would imagine they performed it regularly WITH Neil.

I LOVE that you called Rush Canada's gift to world! Truer words were never spoken. I'm such big fan of the band and of the individual members. When Peart passed away, I was heart broken. Freewill is one of my favorite songs by Rush, and you'll be happy to know, I've been singing it correctly for all these years. LOL - loved your vid. :)

about this album over... It's a photo made by Flip Schulke of damage from Hurricane Carla on Galveston, TX's Seawall Blvd that had a few things added to it... the girl, the artist on the left, and the signs that say Lee Lifeson and Peart. The signs in the background that were changed to the guys name say Coca Cola and Pearl, which was a Texas based beer company. The signs were out in front of The Balinese Room, an infamous gambling house and concert venue. ZZ Top wrote a song about it on an early album. Legend has it that in the 40's after the war, Peggy Lee was doing a show there. A bartender named Sanchez fell in love with her... He created a drink with some tequila, lime juice, and triple sec, and named it after the spanish version of Peggy Lee's real name, Margaret. Yes.... it's the margarita.

My dad was a Peggy Lee fan so I grew up with her songs. Years later, when I joined a singing workshop, I enjoyed Centre stage, because I could click my fingers when singing Fever. I wish I could really sing like her. I must try a margarita some time, although they're not easy to find in England. I'm afraid I don't know anything about Rush. They somehow passed me by.

One of the proudest possessions in my record collection is my original Permanent Waves cover with the “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN” headline intact. Interestingly the label on the record also has a misprinted song list - it lists “Entre Nous” and then “Between Us” as the next track instead of “Different Strings“. I’d love to know how that happened!

Love it when you do Rush segments! My all-time favorite band. Permanent Waves is incredible from start to finish. Ironically, the longest song on the album, Natural Science, is what many consider the ultimate Rush song. Guitars, bass, drums, vocals, keyboards, lyrics all at the height of the band’s abilities. To many drummers ti mention, Steve Smith has beena favorite of mine. Neil definately has been a major influencer through the generations! Hello fellow Idahoan!! I grew up in Burley Idaho. I was a drummer and a friend introduced me to Rush with the 2112 album and have been hooked ever since. Going to a Rush concert was always on my bucket list and I finally was able to make that dream come true a few years back when they made their last tour. I kept thinking " I just need to go this time, it will be the last chance I will have to see them live." My son didn't fall far from the apple tree and became an established musician (multi instruments). Living in Southern Utah, I bought 2 tickets and surprised him with a day trip to Vegas. The smiles on our faces and warmth in our hearts sharing that night with Rush is forever in our "making some memories" folder. Love your work and your story telling abilities. Forever a fan and self declared "honorable friend." Lol.

A high school classmate of my wife was the son of a concert promoter in Miami. He got her and other classmates front row tickets to a show in 1986 - when I asked her many years later what she thought of the show, her response was “Meh, loud…” (She’s a show tunes woman, so this was not up her alley) I’m married to a Phillistine!!

Came from a practical place, Geddy decided to drop bringing amps on tour and just connect his bass into the PA system (which is much easier to do now, he needed a chain of gear to do it back then), but he had nothing behind him compared to Alex on the other side of the stage, so they brought in all the gag appliances like the washers and dryers (which led to free t-shirts for the front rows), Chicken roasters “who’s hungry?” And I believe they also brought a big fridge around too.

I am absolutely loving this entire comment section… reading all these stories is so wonderful! Rush has meant so much to so many people, including myself. I’m mid forties, but the youngest of eleven. One of my older brothers was a huge Rush fan. I was hooked at a very young age. I was lucky enough to see them live 6 times, and took my daughters to a concert on their last tour. I know as a Canadian, I would have known of Rush, but thanks to my dearest, sadly late brother, I’m a devout Rushian lol! Peace and love to all of you guys! ❤️✌🏻🇨🇦

I always gravitated toward the longer tracks, so as much as I enjoy all of _Permanent Waves,_ "Natural Science" is still my favorite. (Followed closely by "Different Strings," which packs a lot of pensiveness into three minutes and fifty-seven seconds!)

I think it's impossible to pick a top 3 for Rush, there are too many great ones and they are all so different. It's really just revealing our individual preferences rather than which ones are objectively better. For example, I would argue the following could all be in the top 3: Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Hold Your Fire, Power Windows, Presto, Counterparts, Test for Echo, Snakes and Arrows. I personally also really like Roll the Bones. There are probably others you could include in that list...

My favorite Rush album by far. This album was always my go to when chilling out in college. I even wrote an essay for a philosophy class citing Freewill. I hadn't thought about that in years. Natural Science is top three of my favorite Rush songs. I even still have a poster of the album cover on the wall in my room at my dad's house. Funny thing... I'm listening to Geddy's new memoir right now. Such an amazing band and story.

I do remember in that same class, for the final exam, the professor put a chain in the middle of the room and said "For your final, prove the existence of this chair." People around me started writing and thinking hard, but I was so over the class I just wrote "What chair?" and turned in my paper. People were staring at me like "He's done already?" I got an A on that exam :)

1980, my first car, one of the first cassette tapes I bought was Permanent Waves. I had earlier Rush Records, but there's something transformational about listening to your music, in your first car. I still listen to that entire album on road trips, and that song, "Free Will" is still turned up. My 60 year old self, gets back in touch with the long gone sixteen year old through those songs. Probably my favorite album.

One of my fondest memories is from before headphones were what they are today. I would take two speakers, one close to each ear, and crank up RUSH at bedtime. RUSH is still at the top of my list of music to this day... RIP Neil.

Rush was one of those things my older brother shared with me, always going on about their technical precision. All I knew is that they were something cool that nobody else listened to, until Subdivisions came along., of course. But when I got a little older, I went backwards and found Freewill and Tom Sawyer. I found out that their precision was also backed up with a passion for music ... And that was their true genius.

I'm not exactly sure why, but Rush seems to popping up everywhere in my algorithm this week. I've always liked them, but I've been going back and listing to their albums while reading the lyrics and holy f**k, man! I never realized how many lyrics I had been mishearing or wasn't sure about. Completely elevates them to a whole new level for me. Everyone should read the lyrics before (or whilst) listening to a Rush song. Peart was a damn genius! Gone too soon.

That was my ritual whenever I got a new Rush album. Read the lyrics and liner notes all the way through, then listen to the album. The experience lost some of its fullness when albums were replaced with CD's.

I will always remember my first Rush concert. Neil started in on the YYZ drum solo, Geddy and Alex looked at their watches with the “There he goes…” expression, and left the stage only to come back several minutes later drinking nearly empty beers. Neil was an endurance athlete the way he played, and all were at the top of their fields. Always fantastic to see live.

Moving Pictures may be a warm-up to the glorious, near-perfect Moving Pictures, but it's still my second-favorite Rush album. "Spirit of Radio" was the song that turned me into a lifelong Rush fan. And that guitar solo on "Freewill"? A monster!

We were one of the few that heard “Freewill” and “The Spirit Of Radio” at Varsity Arena in concert in Toronto September 1979 before the release of the album. We were intrigued by the reggae on “The Spirit Of Radio”. It foreshadowed “Vital Signs” sound the next album. I still remember taking the subway to St-George station and then walking to the stadium. So full of anticipation. BTW, Le Studio was demolished in 2020 after a suspicious 2017 fire.

Your appreciation for the boys is evident and your respect for them welcomed. You even pronounce Peart and YYZ correctly and know it's THE Spirit OF Radio. With all of this, I did chuckle when, in this video, you referred to The Fountain of "Lamenth." Hey, you can't win them all. Keep up the good work.

I had a friend that was a huge Rush fan. Every time we got together, she would be listening to one of their songs. I have always been grateful for that friend. She opened me up to Rush and a whole world unlike anything else I had ever heard before. She ended up moving away after high school and we lost touch. I miss the times that we would just hang out and talk while Rush played on the stereo.

Same here. In 9th grade I dated a guy who was obsessed with Rush. He had an amazing stereo system in his car and Rush was always playing. To this day, over 4 decades later, I think of Scott every time I hear Rush and I'm 15 again and we're back in that little red suped up Datsun 510 cruising the town with Rush blasting. LOL! 😃

Hey Adam! Love your channel, my favorite professor of all time. I live in Victoria, British Columbia Canada. Graduated 1982. Rush is my No.1 Band with a-ha in second. The Professor knows what I`m talking about! Seen Rush twice, Permanent waves, and Roll the Bones tours. My claim to fame: There was a girl that lived 2 doors down from my girlfriend, our age and hung around in our crowd. Her name is Angie Carter. She had an older brother named Todd. A seasoned hardcore fan might know whom I`m talking about here.....Todd is the starman on the cover of Hemispheres. He went to Toronto to study Ballet and made into the National Ballet of Canada.

In High School, I thing about 1979, a friend had that Columbia House Record deal where you pay 1 penny for 6 or 8 records. Then they would send 1 every month. Well, he got Hemispheres and didn't like it. But he gave it to me because of the type of music I listened too. I loved it. I remember listening to it not knowing a thing about the group. I invited my dad in my room to listen to a trach and listen to the drums. My dad was a drummer from the late 50's up to 1976. I remember he being real impressed at what he heard from Neil. Then when Permanent Waves came how I exploded and couldn't get enough of them. I went back and bought all their previous albums, even there 1st album, my least favorite. RIP Neil Peart. One hell of a drummer.

I reacquainted myself with Rush a couple years ago. A phenomenal band that sounds like no other. They never compromised or followed the trend. While their sound changed it would evolve to the times but still sounded unique. There is talk of Gedsy and Alex doing something. While you can’t replace Neil it would be great to see what they do.

I have been a Rush fan for 35 + years and will be forever. When Alex was asked about a possible Rush comeback tour, he simply stated, "there is no Rush without Neil". 100% agree. Neil is one of the greatest lyricists and drummers the world has known.

Saw Rush in Germany for their Signals tour all I knew about them at the time was the song Tom Sawyer that a local night club would play, weird song to try to dance to, and that a friend said the drummer was amazing! don't remember a lot about the concert except yes the drummer was amazing! He had a huge drum set that he ran his sticks across as effortlessly as a concert pianist would across a key board the music was loud!! and I got burnt in the neck from a cigarette while attempting to follow my friend through the crowd to the front of the stage. oh and since I travelled there on an Air Force sponsored rec center bus when we returned to base, the SPs brought the drug dogs onto the bus. I bought the Album Signals shortly there after as well as moving pictures. became a growing Rush fan ever since. Listen to them more than any other band and never get tired of them .

Permanent waves, is timeless. Freewill as example means the same today as it did in the 80s. Neil was a genius. All 3 men were scholars of there time. 😊I believe if more people listened to rush, our world would be a much better place. An yet the irony is rush even explains that the human condition 😊 rush taught me more about life then any school. At 60 I may be going bold, but my eyes are still blue as yesterday 😊 love these guys!

I highly recommend the book "My Effin' Life" by Geddy Lee. It truly humanizes a band that many of us have elevated to a nearly God-like status. It offers hope in a sense that, "If they can do it..."

I am going to say something and people can agree or disagree.... Rush's most underrated album is A Clockwork Angles! The first time I heard this album was when they played it live at a concert. A freaking MASTERPIECE!

@learningisfun2108 I agree! Which is why I hadn't paid any attention to their new album when it was released. Imagine my utter amazement when rush took the stage after intermission with a STRING SECTION! Then they started to play, and my mind was freak blown! My wife ( a huge rush fan, by the way) was laughing at the expression on my face. She said it looked like a 6 year old on Christmas morning.

I have seen them in concert twice (once in the front row in Detroit) so I was too cavalier, then I skipped the R40 tour (“too expensive!”). What a mistake. I’ll have to live with that the rest of my life, as they say. 🎶What a fool I used to be 🎶

@learningisfun2108 Honestly, I almost skipped this concert. I had been to around 8 or 9 shows throughout the years and thought "I will catch them next time". Then my wife said that she wanted to go see them again..... As fate would have it this was their last tour.

I bought Clockwork Angels when it first came out and fell in love with all of it on the first listen. I knew when I got to The Garden it would be the last album. I just knew. My daughter and I did go see them on that tour, and so glad we did. I've been a fan since 1977, and my daugher is also a fan, and Rush was the first concert she had ever seen. We've been to see them on 4 tours together :)

I'm a drummer, and Neil was my single greatest inspiration. Rush was the band that scratched that itch for content that inspired both musically, and intellectually. I saw the Moving Pictures show in Albuquerque, and it is a marker stone in my memory. No other band has had a greater effect on me, and Neil's passing impacted me in a way I never expected for someone I had never met. It really made me realize how important Rush had been for me, and especially how important Neil had been. To this day, there are echoes of Neil Peart in my drumming.

My first RUSH show on this tour. 23 May, 1980 Nassau Coliseum, Long Island. Geddy and Alex did the encore in NY Islanders jerseys and dedicated the encore to them. The next day the Islanders won the first of FOUR straight Stanley Cups - in that same building RUSH played the night before.

That must've felt like every Michigan high school in 1980 on that Friday night during basketball when the USA hockey team defeated the RUSSIANS. THE whole WEST erupted in cheers and applause. Rush and Islanders in the same 24 hours! What memories.

It’s always bothered be that Rush is forced into the best “TRIO” title. They out ROCKED most 4-5-6 pieces bands. They deserve just straight up “BADASS BAND” title!! But it is AMAZING that all of that perfection came from three normal acting guys you’d have a beer (glass of wine) with. Except Neil, he would have been off on a bike ride.

I saw Rush on March 31st 1976 at Yakima Valley Community College gymnasium. I also saw them in 1984 in Seattle and 2006 at the Columbia River gouge. Turns out that was Neils favorite venue. He discribes it in Ghost Rider. Rush will always be my favorite band. I want Xanadu to be the first song played at my memorial.

Saw Rush in 86. Best concert. Blue Oyster Cult opened for them. Birmingham, Alabama. Free will is so good. I love it. I didn’t have liner notes. Moving Pictures was the tour I saw. They did not write for radio. Neil wrote lyrics like a true poet. He paraphrased Shakespeare often. Limelight has the world’s a stage reference. Tom Sawyer is awesome of course. Spirit of the Radio is epic. The flub on liner notes in the USA. “You cannot have made a choice.” I can’t remember what is sung. “You still have made a choice.” That’s a key line too. Wow.

@@ProfessorofRock have you done a video about LA Woman? If you change the lyrics from "just got into town about an hour ago" to "took a little downer 'bout an hour ago..." And you change "where's the little girls in their Hollywood bungalows," to "with a little girl in a Hollywood bungalow," which is clearly correct... And you change "LA woman Sunday afternoon" to "LA woman's gonna have to do..." It changes the whole tone and meaning of the song. And I will never believe that that's not what Morrison wrote and sings, no matter how many lyric sites say otherwise, and no matter how many cover bands sing it based on those online lyrics.

I saw them in downtown Jacksonville, Florida in probably 1976, among many others Rush shows. Molly Hatchet opened up with their brand new first album material, then it was the Pat Traverse band's last night on the tour so they played their encore in their tighty whiteys, and then Rush played. We got to the hall way early and talked to the band ,who pulled up in a gray RV, as they walked into the venue. They played a great show, joined for a tune or two by the PTB, and at the end of their show, before the encore, the song ended with a flash of lights and Neil's incoming drumstick hit me in the chest. and fell on the floor. My buddies little brother and I dove for it, and he wedged his head in between the two seats in front of him as he lunged for the prize. I was faster and got the stick which was splintered and almost broken from Neil's bad ass playing, and Harold got a bruise on each side of his forehead. Looked funny as hell the next day. I still have the drumstick. I am guessing Harold's bruises are gone by now, except for the mental ones. Tickets were $4 for that show. No shit. A great day for three teenagers! Anyone else reading this at that show?

Fell in love with the band at the age of seven when I received a birthday gift from my brother 'all the world's a stage'. I could always picture the keystone cops when the professor played his drum solo. Never been disappointed in any of their albums!
