Yeah exactly. These are interesting...but definitely inspired by and supposed to be competition to the AD-200...but at an unwarranted higher price point with a crappier on-camera remote. Hell, or buy three of the new AD-400 Pros and have three more powerful, equally or more colour stable lights...hell they can even take Profoto modifiers!

The price is problematic, and I am surprised by the low output. The contender is the AD400 pro by godox. It supports Profoto modifiers in good theory. The appeal of this lights is how compact they are. It’s amazing. The downside is the non exposed bulb. Can one service the bulb?

lol truth. 2x AD200, 3x cheap video lights, and a remote for under the price of one low powered profoto light. And you can toss in a round light modifier while you are at it! This light looks amazing, but... the price is craaaazy. I hope no one buys a single one just to boycott the price. Even $1000 is too much for a 250W light, no matter that it has Bluetooth, battery and a fancy display. I really love it, but I wouldn't be able to justify the cost in my fees.

useless bluetooth will drain the battery, too. I don't understand why they made a flash with a crappy video light. Really feel like this idea is the right direction, the menus look awesome, but the value is extremely low. @felix - it's business, not fandom, and the product has to pay for itself quickly so you can turn a profit and make money for yourself.

@@FelixCervantes sadly for Profoto though, the lights below them are no longer cheaply built and stripped of features. Their last two releases literally pull inspiration from what Godox has doing. I realize Profoto is expensive, but for what this light is, I expected a $1000 price point, $1600 isn't Profoto territory on this, it's Broncolor, and they aren't Broncolor. No live flash power on the remote? Definitely not acceptable at this price point. It's a cool light when you don't look at price, but otherwise I don't see a reason for the price.
@RussellTracyPhotography

TheTechnoPilot I dont need live flash power on the remote. If I need to see the flash power I can turn around to my computer and look on the Profoto Studio app and see what power level Im at and adjust it directly from the computer if I need to. It is my idea that we are heading or if not already arrived at the time when gear become disposable, example I have B1, B2, A1, which are all great tools, but very expensive. Now with the new B10, my guess is that the B2 has suffered a considerable drop in value, but hey its still a great light. As a hard working full time photographer I find it harder to justify the cost of these units, recently purchased a couple of Ad200 which do an amazing job and coupled with the new ST-IV Trigger at £60 or $60 which is an amazing trigger, it feels just as good if not better built than the profoto airsync which is almost 6 x the cost. The ST-IV offers more information with regard to output vs the Profoto. So I will not be adding to my light collection with this new B10. Going to spend and enjoy the money saved, while still taking the same photograph.

AD400 PRO weighs 4.6lbs (2.1 kg) vs the B10 at 3.3lbs (1.5 kg) . The AD400 is bigger, but not by that much and it costs $649 vs $1595 from Adorama. I am really surprised that none of the big manufacturers have lowered their prices yet. I guess that Godox really isnt impacting the professional market that much yet.

Great review, good product, terrible price. What I love about my Profoto lights is the protruding flashtube, it fills a beauty dish and strip light much better. I'm not sure I'm willing to give that up for this feature set, though I'm open to it, given that I bought Aputure 120s for video.

Well I own both the Profoto B1, B2 and 2 AD200 (that I bought later) and for me, the price difference is justified. Out in the field, lightstands fall all the time, sandbags or not. The Profoto gear is built to last, my B1 has resisted the most horrible falls, and man that light falls hard. One AD200 already died because of this. Second, if you use TTL for convenience, you're going to love Profoto's TTL implementation for both Sony and Nikon gear. Godox doesn't get it right, and in the case of Sony, it underexposes a few stops if you shoot at an aperture wider that f/4. That's a known issue that's rarely mentioned. The quality of light, that's also true: choose Nikon or Canon for it's color science, with the right WB and pair it with Profoto and you can shoot awesome OCF photos that require minimal or no color correction. A few photoshoots with equipment that do not produce reliable and consistent color of light and you're going to spend your money (or time) color-correcting like crazy, if that's important to you. I bought the AD200 to travel light, now it's time to sell it.

To compare the Profoto light with a speedlight you have to put a modifier to both, otherwise you're going to be fooled by the spread of light. Bare speedlights focus the light a lot. For example, if you compare the AD200 + speedlight head vs the AD200 + lightbulb at the same power level, the first one is going to give you 1.5-2 more stops of light measured at the center. If you use a softbox both give almost the same measured output. At 9:56 in your video, you can see that the lightspread is almost twice as big. If the intensity at the center is the same, that's only possible with more power.
@phaskellhall
@phaskellhall 5 жыл бұрын
Luis Diego Salas we will do these tests when we get home. The falloff from the speedlight was still much greater than the Profoto in these quick tests to where it was obvious the B10 was a stop or two more powerful. My go to test is a beautydish though since it can eat a lot of light up.

with 2 speed-lights you can cross light (which you can't with one light :-) and if one fails you still have the other. If you want two of these then you need to carry two gear-bags (speedlights can fit in your one bag). And if you have only one B10 and it fails no light whatsoever. Plus this costs is 5+ speed-lights/led lights as the presenter suggests. If you have modifiers/stands that's a third bag to carry around :-) So clearly this whole set up is for larger-scale pro work; where you have at least 3 people on a 'shoot'. This idea of filming and photographing at the same time is also oversold. In a wedding situation you have one person doing the video and they have their own light and one or two photographers each with their own light. It beats me how you can use the same light through-out for film and video if you are doing a wedding. Not even in film sets they do that. They prepare each set with its own light and then film photography has no light of its own but goes off the filming light. But a wedding is a fluid event (not a film set) you cannot stop the process between 'scenes' to set up/alter the lights. You set them once (and this may not always be possible) and you hope for the best :-) So it pays if you are a 3-person team (e.g. 1 video, 2 photo) to be able to alter the light at the individual level.

That's insane! I just bought the B1X kit, and if this is true I would much rather give up 1/3 stop in exchange for this smaller light. A full stop is another story tho, especially here in Miami, sun with HSS. So.. I am gasping for someone to has access to both lights to make a quick, comparison video. On my knees begging LOL. I don't own one either lol. I just wanna get an idea of power difference etc. Also to see how well it holds up in hss mode VS the b1x. I have about 4 days left till I can't send back my b1x kit. Hoping someone can help 😁

Woke up this am with a comment on another post I have going.. I'm told to rather then look at the bare blub power vs one another, to put the light in a modifier. So, if you can.. use that 2' beauty dish you have.. and see about power output vs the B1x. Also, if you can.. try in HSS (especially at the faster shutters) and see if one has an advantage over the other in that regard. I just can't believe that this is only 1/3 of a stop difference than the B1X.. yet all of the output specs on Profoto's site say its a full stop different when using the Magnum Reflector. A one stop difference is basically twice as powerful, and this would make more sense. Finger crossed you can do a test soon so I can decide either way, so I can send back the B1X kit if needed. Patrick, your a life saver man.. truly are.

Godox ad200 or ad400 on comparison tests more than match the output and quality of light of Profoto, only real difference is price and snobbery factor.

Light is light. Expensive and cheap lights = Same quality output. The only difference with lights are colors. Nothing more. $1600 is way overpriced and ripped off.

Profoto’s price is simple. Besides being reliable and ruggedly built, they are dead simple to use! They get out of the way of photography, all while being a flexible and intuitive extension of your camera. Brilliant!!! For some unfathomable reason, other flash companies haven’t discovered simple! Why, I do‘no, third base!

Can anyone explain to me why Profoto always uses focused light? Why don't they use a normal ring-flash bulb that fires in all directions? No matter the diffusion or modifier you will always have a big hotspot in the middle where as a ring-bulb does not.
@phaskellhall
@phaskellhall 5 жыл бұрын
PbVeritas I don’t think this affects the quality of light at all when you use a soft modifier. Look up the video we did on the Profoto glass dome. You tech can see a difference if you expose for the softbox but not on your subject.

Interesting video! But to be fair: You tested in a way where it barely makes any difference. A beauty dish and a octa straight across will not have a huge impact on the light. A narrow strip light on the other hand will have a huge difference in lighting. I tried it out myself and had 3 stops of light loss from the center to the top and bottom with a recessed light where as the light dome only had 1 to 1.5 stops. It really depends on what kind of lighting you are using but pointing a recessed light straight at a object is not the way I want my photos lit. But you are right, it is by far not as a big of a deal as anyone makes it out to be.

Hey +Fstoppers - Thanks for this review. I read a bunch of comments below while I was less than halfway through the video. Then I continued watching and saw that you guys gave an accurate and honest review. You stated that (although you didn't have a light meter with you) it didn't seem they were equivalent to the output of 5 speedlites. You stated that the Profoto Air remote system doesn't have two-way communication with the B10, and requires looking on the back of the B10 to see what the power level is. You acknowledge that these units are expensive and not for everyone. For all the people slamming the video, they're missing the point. This was a review, not a comparison between the B10 and (insert other brand here), it was a very fair review. Thank you!

Also to add, this video in one part didn't make sense. He says "I've been told that the remote and the flash do not actually communicate with each other, it's just sending signals to the flash". But to contradict this, he said previously that the remote DOES tell you when you have reached the highest or lowest output. So yeh - that didn't make any sense. This is an important subject, and it will put me off buying a set of two of these strobes as I've become very accustomed to my Canon wireless EX trigger showing me exposure (manual and TTL) on the camera for each flash group.

It is definitely good product, that can replace my two 60GN speed lights and compact video light (250$ all together). But single unit is not suitable for professional work, so it is good as additional light to existing B1 or you will need to buy set of two B10.

A Profoto maybe more expensive then those cheap lights from China but you have to consider the service life. I have a battery powered monolight that looks very much like a Profoto B1 and I also have two B1 location kits. The B1 look alike has already been replaced with less then a 5 months of service while the B1's just keep working. First day I had the B1 I used them to light action in a gym, fired off 1200 images in less then 2 hours, they never missed a beat.

Profoto really aren’t getting it, the days of them being able to charge insane prices for their gear is long gone, Godox is killing them in terms of innovation and doing it at a price that normally users can afford. The AD200 is smaller, better shaped, only slightly less powerful and way more versatile
@RayValdezPhotography

Profoto always had cheaper competition from aliens bees to just a yongnuo flash on stand with an umbrella. What's your point
@tbgsport
@tbgsport 5 жыл бұрын
My point is that those competitors have now caught up and certainly in terms of innovation, overtaken Profoto, yet Profoto keep going on blindly as if nothing has changed. How can a company like this release a unit that cannot, at the time of release be controlled from the remote, you have to get your phone out and connect to the strobe via bluetooth. This is insane.
@RayValdezPhotography
@RayValdezPhotography 5 жыл бұрын
A light is a light, people usually pay for quality, reliability, and and convenience. Companies like profoto don't expect to sell to every one. You can control it from the remote. the phone gives you more options. its the only strobe with a decent power light and a way to change the white balance on the modeling light. They would have to make a new remote.
@tbgsport
@tbgsport 5 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that the B10 is not much smaller than the Godox AD400PRO, which is almost a stop more powerful, it is way bigger the the AD200 which is barely less powerful and it lacks the flexibility of the AD200 and the AD200/400 are fully controllable from the remote.... Which leaves the fact that you can change the white balance of the modelling light as the major selling point. I get that you love Profoto, and that's cool, but you have to acknowledge that the B10 does not represent anything new or amazing, and price wise it is ridiculous.
