Project Iona Part 16: W140 Front Bumper Cover Installation and Internal Support Brace Replacement

Welcome back to W140 Restorations and the latest edition of Project Iona. In this episode we repair damage left behind from a parking lot "event" which left Iona without a front bumper cover and two broken support braces.
We take apart the inner support and outer bumper shell to access the Mercedes Benz 140-885-00-14 support braces. Full start to finish step-by-step instructions to replace and reinstall the front bumper on your W140.
Thankful the bumper came off when she was in reverse and not going down the road. Iona and her decades old plastic bumper was no match for a generic grocery getter and the 2022 version of the family truckster. Come along as we drill out some rivets, replace some very hard to find parts, and buff out the white paint left on Iona.

Zip ties are a perfectly acceptable temporary fix. Gotta keep these cars on the road. Just pick up an appropriate rivet gun for next time you happen to have the bumper off. Loving the vids

Totally awesome video! The zip ties are my go to solution as well. No pun intended but I park my W140 in handicap to prevent such mayhem.

Thanks for the kind words on the awesome video! I’m going to start parking on the moon to avoid more midsized SUVs. By the way, only zip ties anywhere near Iona, until I find a larger rivet set.

Love the video. I am getting my front and rear bumpers repainted after Thanksgiving. Right now it is getting new wheel bearings and brakes.

I just had to buy a rivnut kit because M/B decided to rivet their speaker enclosures to the door 😳. I wasn't about to drill out rivets again if I needed to remove the speaker. I wonder if a long rivnut would work with a flush screw. Removable and secure, but I must admit, nylon ties are ok.

Might try aluminum washers with the rivets on a second go round. The rivets were pulling through the plastic and tearing the inner frame, so I had to stop. The original MB ones were very wide at the head with a narrow shank. Thanks for the suggestion.

Would you say it's too easy to get a driving license in the States? It certainly is out here in Thailand! Hey, would love to see an overview of the car; we only ever see small portions of her!

Thanks for watching and great suggestion on a follow-up overview. I’ve done so much on Iona this past year that she’s overdue for an update video. Not sure about licenses, but I’m happy to have a W140 as my daily driver.
