Yet another challenge with the GT. Inner wheel arches, as well as outer ones, are rusted. In this episode I do inner wheel bay and arches, so I can have solid base for making outer arches after sandblasting. So these are not welded in yet so car can be sandblasted inside out, without leaving any spot undone.

I appreciate that! Although, better tools equal better results...as you see with the sandbag and new metal shaping mallet - end result is much better...Only if I could learn how to weld during this process...

Thanks for the comment, it is not my invention, but a home made version for commercial product. But yes, it is genius and very handy for forming sheet metal.

GT 1900 is going to be first class with your workmanship. Kids are missing out today, In the 70s at secondary school we learnt, Sheet metal work ( plumbing and jewellery), Basic Machining( lathe work, shaper), Electrical, Carpentry, & Photography, and graphics to plan the work in these classes.

Thanks for the comment ! Yes, these are the basic skills that everyone needs to have at some level, even if one never need those skills, but to understand the process and effort. I think metal and woodworking is still part of the mandatory curriculum in schools in Finland. But in my days it was woodworking for both boys and girls, but metal work for boys only and textile work for girls, and that was bluntly wrong !! I think that is more equal nowadays...

Love the metal work, and the dedication to restoring this car. I can't say that anyone else would've fixed this car; most would consider it too far gone and found a better example to work with. But you're so far into it now might as well finish it! Good job.

Nice job , a little story when I was at school we had 2 woodwork teachers and 2 metalwork teachers our metalwork teacher would throw hammers at kids not paying attention you would be working away clatter bang a hammer would bounce off the wall he was a nutcase the other teacher would make you carry a leather sand bag around the room with your arm stretched out above your head all the weight pressing down on your shoulder joints and elbow my brother got him , the bag of sand reminded me of it , I've always liked them , I was a panel beater at a Vauxhall dealers (GM UK at the time) in the 70's there was a story going round when they were new they had to fill chassis sections with concrete to keep the front ends down .

The problem on the GT is: even though it is *technically* based on the Opel Kadett / Olympia it almost shares no bodywork with them - a section for the rear axle and the gearbox tunnel maybe, but that was it. The floor does not match due to position of the seats further rear and the front part is different due to the placement of the engine behind the front axle instead of on top of it. This in return makes the main front axle carrier different, even though you just have to remove the motor mounts from a new one .... well ... if you get one ... 🙂
@GT1900garage

Yes, except I disagree for one thing, it's not a problem with GT, it's feature :)
@wacholder5690
@wacholder5690 10 ай бұрын
@@GT1900garage Nice features. They even re-invented the door hinges. These are not even Opel I think. Opel at that time used these stupid sheetmetal "piano fold" type of door hinges that wear out pretty fast. Wait until you have to work on the engine. ;-)

Beatiful work, as always. Are your little anvils made from old railway tracks ? I'm sure that you would find it useful to make some T dollies. I know that I have mentioned Tony Fitzparick's channel to you before, but he has a very good video on youtube about making simple tools, including T dollies that he uses a lot in his fabrications. Best wishes.

Hi George, Yes they are. I see these mini anvils a lot in flee markets and garage sales, I think people made this in 50's after the war. I have been thinking about making a T dolly, so far I have been coping with a piece of pipe in a vise.. I am following TF channel up on your recommendation.

I will send you some pictures as I’m moving along. I know my color is what yours was in a base color, it is orange. I have finished taking out the inside, I still have the gas tank to do and have started to remove the rear wheels and front wheel. I am sure I will have to drop the engine as you did with the trans. I’ll keep in touch with you. Looking forward to your 21.

Another story those oval number plates on the wall , I was working at a garage in the 80's a guy came on with thing it was a Mazda coupe left hand drive with the oval plates he had just had it UK registered he was a Squaddie he wanted the plates swapped over I put the new plates on he said just throw the old ones away being a bit of a car nut and so was my brother I gave the plates to him , a couple of years later he asked me to help his mate bring a ex US army GMC panel van back home it was over 100 miles away , we got there it was the middle of winter and snowing the van had no drivers side front window and no number plates he pulls out the oval plates from a bag , said you have got to be joking we had to drive the thing back no tax MOT or insurance with false plates on and no windscreen in the middle of a snow blizzard half way home the road was partially blocked by a big crash so had to drive past very slowly as the police had slowed everyone down , when we got back I said I wanted the plates back as he was not doing that again , he did same mate but with a ex US army truck he's still got them .
