Project Opel GT 1971 #14 Shaping with English Wheel

First time using English Wheel in order to create shapes for sheet metal. I have no experience with the tool, so any hints and tips are highly appreciated. But I was fairly happy about the end result. Obviously lot of fine tuning is required, but it wasn't a total disaster.
Also, apologies for slightly poor picture quality. For some reason editing software change my project settings for this episode. I noticed it when uploading to KZfaq and file size was significantly smaller.

agreed. @@GT1900garage you seem to have a feel for it. You first construct templates. Well well done. I allso learn alot about the way you do your measurements. Love the laser 'horizon'. It shows us viewers in an instance what you are measuring. Very very helpful and insightful. A piece of lead on a string can help you to level the laser too. use a geo triangle and there you go. you can check whether the car base is level and other lines are in symmetry. While still keeping the whole 'feel' intuitive.

My dad used to drive us out to a grass airfield in middle Georgia in a metallic blue Opel GT. My brother and I were just small enough to share the front seat. Think it was around '86-87. Our favorite part was watching the headlights flip before we got in the car and headed back home. I remember the setting sun covering everything with oversaturated warm light, all the analog interfaces in the car and the sunset combining to make an impression that remains with me to this day. It may have been interpolated a bit over time, but at the center of it all was a beat up Opel GT.

My first employer in car sheet metal told me: if you can do it without special tools, you can do it later with special tools. He was so right. It has brought me so much knowledge over the years. With you all those beautiful tools give faster and better results. You do have to know what you are doing, even with special tools. You have my compliments.

Wow, for the first try with the English Wheel, this seems to be quite a masterpiece to me. But i understand you´re not completely satisfied with the result. It´s a complex shape with many different sections. And if it somehow doesn´t look like the original factory shape, you would be annoyed for the next 30 years. You know it, you´ll see it. Every time. The rear end of many cars of that period is so iconic, it has to be perfect to your eye. Everything else is not acceptable. So don´t hurry. I guess the viewers are very patient. By the way, that idea with the subframe is awesome. Reminds me on those Italian Superleggera Bodyworks of the 50s and 60s. And because it´s German car, i´ll not say "Keep on". Instead you´ll get the German "Weiter so!" 👍

Well you have the editing spot on,I have looked at other builds, but the way you have done it keeps you totaly interested all the time.I have to say this Opel GT you are doing is not a car I was familiar with, it looks so streamlined well ahead of its time,will you be doing the engine at some point?

Sorry, have missed this comment !! Yes, the design of the car is beautiful, streamlined and masculine at the same time...I am doing the engine at some point, it might be that I either just put this engine in, or rebuild bigger one....depends... I will keep matching numbers together,...but I might want to spice up the engine somehow..

That jig fabrication was the key to a very complex problem (and a complex piece of sheetmetal). Nicely done!! But what a lot of preparation for .51 sq. m. of panel. I am deeply impresses with the low amount of hours you have into a very complicated restoration. PS. What was/is your occupation? You seem very comfortable around machinery.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment John. Yes, I figured out that sturdy jig is essential, since all the side panels are loose and wobbly. So in order to make is even close to correct shape AND symmetrical, I need to make a jig. "Lot of preparation" is the fun part, its the welding that I hate because I'm lousy welder. I am kinda interested myself to see what is the final amount of hours in the counter when I am done with this. My education is media production (in 1990's) but never worked in that industry, nor have worked with metal industry either. I am a technical purchaser in big Finnish company (mining machinery)

@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 11 ай бұрын
Tolle Frage.

When Opal was choosing this design there was a much more modern looking alternate. Sort of a Guigario design. I remember when they selected this poor attempt to mimic that year’s corvette.

Thanks for comment, Yes. That 68 model Corvette is my favorite American car for obvious reasons. Some might even said that since both car brands were owned by GM, and partially same team worked with design-->there is logical cause for resemblance . Some even dared to state that Opel GT was designed before, and put on hold until the big brother was released. But I m not an Opel expert, I just love small european cars more than American big brothers :)

So the car was partly made with soldering, at least on the rear end. Or it was done during repairs, the cheap ones I guess.

Not at ALL. I tried to find a decent condition car, that have some metal work that will match my skill level. I know how bad Opel GTs could be, I have been following several projects in KZfaq for long time. But unfortunately my lottery ticket did not win, and I got this rust bucket. But after paying the transportation from Germany to Finland, I had no other option but take tools and start working. And to be honest, it has given a totally new point of view to this channel. Its not a light restoration process, but a total salvation project for a beginner that took a bigger bite that one can chew.
