I only use mandatory constraints for fixed contract milestones.

Hi Mike, I've understood but please can you enlighten me even if I've assigned mandatory start/finish dates for the first activity, should not I use them? For example, I have a turnaround schedule and all works will be started in shutdown dates so can I assign mandatory dates for first activitiy? Thanks.

I advocate for avoiding them - but they probably won't be a problem for the first activity in a schedule - only if you use them downstream. You can break relationships with them. Mandatory constraints are stronger than relationships.
