This video and the previous one reminded how much I miss Stan and Marshall talking about art in the draftsmen podcast. I'm grateful for all the free content that we get from so many professionals in this channel but Stan and Marshall have a special place in my heart because I listened to them a lot when I decided to pursue art. I know you must be really busy, Stan, but I really appreciate having you in this videos!

I have been drawing for a little over 5 years now, started with Stan's videos and went on to combining that with Watts. Of course I was impatient with myself, just like everyone is. What Jeff Watts kept saying to me, as I stringently tried to get every angle, measurement and proportion right, was that I should start drawing without overthinking but with feeling. At the time I just couldn't let go of my techniques (which are useful nonetheless). Now, a few years later I came to understand that my best drawings resulted from not using these techniques at all. Now, you could argue that it is because I have extensively trained the techniques that I don't have to think about them anymore but I think there's more to it. My personal opinion is that at a certain point where you have enough understanding of the basic principles of gesture and structure (and maybe anatomy), you shouldn't practice anything specific but instead just draw figures where you apply everything at once. I always try to draw gesture where gesture is needed but structure where structure is needed at the same time. So in contrast to your answer, Stan, to start with a good portion of gesture, I wouldn't make it so distinct. Put that aside, I just wanted to say that your content is great and that you are in my opinion one of the best artists to do quick sketches and long pose figure drawings. You even got better than your teachers. Keep it up!

Personally had the same problem overthinking the pose applying to much shapes and details yes my poses look good I guess however it took quite a lot of time and energy.Apart from that the kinda always looked motionless and without energy. So some of my classmates started to notice that and make suggestions and recently I was baffled, didn’t know what method of sketching should be using, however finding someone who has gone trough that calms me a little. So thanks a lot And of course to Proko.

Got any tips for this situation? Structure, anatomy, gesture, ive already learned, I don’t know why but when I pick up my pencil and look down at my paper I feel a dread and when I actually start drawing and ignoring it, it feels like I have a fatigue. I used to enjoy doing those same things but I feel like the longer it gets the worst I get.

As someone who once did get stuck on gesture I learned the hard way when I sat down wanting to draw something from my imagination. The gesture looked fine but everything else sucked. Started keeping a diary, just a basic cheap diary from a shop and I plan out each day for a minimum of two hours. Keeps me from hyperfocusing on one thing too long. If something happens I can at least say I got two hours of art in today, better than nothing.

I am happy to hear that you don't just focus on gesture drawings and not empliment them throught your journey of becoming an artist of any kind. it is essential to caryy them with you throughout the journey. It's like knowing your ABC to be able to know how certain words are build and knowing the sound the letter make to prnounce a word in one slope. I feel like the terms in art are taken way too realistic that doing a quicksketch mean to sketch them really fast no it mean to simplify them with less details. and having a structured based of an object means to be perfect which you learn when drawing the head for the first time "the circle doesn't have to be PERFECT" means you can break SOME rules to reall help you express a story or the character their appereance to its limit. I am really glad that Proko gave me that reality check to not to literally think of something to literal but more in common sense. Draw fast, simplify them more. Draw a standing pose draw a dynamic pose with eggtreme posture. not some blah stiff dead pose. make it have life to it. Implement everything that you learn while trying new things it's like chemical experiement what works for what and if that doesn't work you know not to do them. I feel like some artisit including me are afraid to try something new because of comfort in doing one thing but in the industry you need to be able to be flexable to certain position becuase you may never know those flexibility can open doors for more then one oppotunities. Start while your still young and have fun. break some rules but NEVER EVER skip the fundamentals they are going to be there until the very end of your journey. It did for them why not for you. *Psss...it's a language you need to know before you can speak fluently* *coughs* in other words convicne someone what you draw. Good luck in your art journey everyone and thank you for taking the time in hearing me rent for a mintue about my thoughs of art. *now onwards with my journey* BYE!

I have a question, I have been self studying drawing for 2 years drawing multiple hours every day, read every book watched every tutorial, I practice a lot, however I understand how important are fundamentals but it's all what every body speaks about, i have been stuck for a very long time in intermediate level and it's harder for me to see my weaknesses, it's like I understand everything and I apply it to the best of my knowledge but something just doesn't feel right (visually) so how can an intermediate, upper intermediate artists measure themselves, find their weaknesses and improve? It's hard when you're alone, also are there any certain challenging practices that can push me to the next level?

@stanprokopenko hey master Proko I hope you are great. I have wondered what his analysis of Burne Hogarth would be, his methodology, his way of drawing the head and the body. As a teacher of the loomis method that you are I want to know what you think about his books.

i personally think hogarth is very inflexible and stuck in a certain modus operandi, not really able to do much beyond what feels like "templated" work. his instructional books suffer the same issue, especially his drapery book. it has the insane issue of assuming all clothing is made from the same uniform material that is always predictable. his musculature is extremely stylized and doesent work well as a teaching subject, more as a display of how he thinks about it. this is why its important to not study masters for your fundamentals, but study what they studied.

I try doing gesture for years with little skills gained. Not sure why I can't grow like other students, and wondering if how people get better. My art compared to many would be considered, said by other artists, weak and unprofessional. Coloring shading as well is a monster to master with 3D sculpting. With the rise of AI artists, stable diffusion, creating art and people using it to make money. So much to think about.

I kinda gave up with gesture years ago because it was causing actual anger. It's this nebulous undefined thing that doesn't seem to exist. I think that's why people like myself spent years practising it because we are so anxious about understanding it because we're told it's fundamental to good drawing. But after wasted years I think it's best to forget gesture and focus on drawing stuff that actually exists in front of our eyes. Not all this nonsensical Rhythmicflowlyforcefeelingenergiesssssjjhtyijgssyokjbnkjnm!!!
