To celebrate passing 50,000 subscribers today I take on myself! I revisit two popular topics, Why halo Infinite removed so many weapons and why dual wielding will never return to Halo, to prove that I could be wrong about my conclusions. I've always preferred overlapping weapons, especially when it's for different factions. I mean, both sides are likely to use a sniper, anti-tank and precision weapons for example. Think NATO Vs Russia, both sides use equivalent weapons. And Halo is in a unique position in that you don't bring weapons into the sandbox like CoD, you find them in it like Unreal Tournament, so not every map needs every weapon, and with forge it allows for more options for creators on what weapons they choose to use in their creations.

Agreed, tbh I think the balance was rather fair with dual wielding too, though I think if the issue was "well then people don't melee", I think what should be done is allow either a slower melee or a "thrown weapon damage" melee to keep the balance from dual wielding being the only way for competitive.

In the context of dual welding, I think a cool idea of introducing a "fake dual welding" weapon would be like a magnetic banished shotgun that splits in 2. You can't combine with other weapons, it's just "cool" aesthetic wise to hold two weapons, while gameplay wise works like the Heatwave or the Hydra which has two ways to function. Also I like that with dual weapons you can use granade or attack with Melee. So maybe when you have the shotgun split in 2 you can't do those.

An older game Area 51(not the arcade shooter, but the one before Area 51 Blacksite) for Xbox had that kind of thing for its own weapon set... Ironically the Shotgun could be dual wielded but the pistol could not(it was scoped though, so it made enough sense) as well as the normal human assault rifle, but it felt pretty well balanced.

CoD: Infinite Warfare had a couple of weapons that worked just like this (apart from preventing melee/grenade) and they were dope IMO.

I think previous games tried to compensate the lack of dual wielding by having weapons whose function was meant to emulate a few dual wielding combos. The Needler in 3 was jacked up to be just as effective as wielding 2 of them in well... Halo 2. The Plasma Repeater in Reach tried to be like dual wielding 2 Plasma Rifles. The results are questionable. The Saw in Halo 4 for dual SMGs. Pretty good at ripping people apart if they get close enough to eat everything like popcorn.

In regards to balancing dual-wielding! I'm making a game that tries to replicate & expand Halo's core gameplay (+other FPSs of the time), this were some of my solutions: - Independent crosshairs that don't overlap completely when dual-wielding, each slightly off-centered, thus making the dual-wield most effective only at closer ranges, where your target covers the entirety of both crosshairs - Increased recoil &/or bloom % when dual-wielding for each weapon, and even more when firing both - Independent Spray Patterns for each weapon, that get mirrored when changing hands - Spray Patterns interact with each other by adding themselves when fired simultaneously, thus creating unique spray patterns for different weapon combinations - Equipped weapons affect your max speed, so dual-wielding makes you slightly slower, closer to carrying a rifle - Movement affects your aim by slightly offsetting the position of the crosshair depending on the weight of weapons, when dual-wielding the weight of each weapon is added so that the crosshairs move together, as if it was a single weapon with increased weight All of this systems can not only be used to balance them, but also to experiment a lot with the way you use each dual-wield combination, such as by firing at different firerates, firing together, or by firing one weapon before the other, each combination creating a different kind of "recoil pattern" that is defined by the way you decide to fire your dual-wielded weapons. HMU if you would like to test it for yourself! Would love to get some feedback on it!

My thinking was always that redundant weapon platforms (i.e. having a human and alien counterpart of the exact same weapon) isn't a bad thing; but rather, a good one as it allowed players to further express themselves by giving them more flavor to personalize their respective kits.

Good balance imo should be like good UI, it seems invisible, and everything feels natural. That is much easier said than done obviously, in practical terms the devs should strive to make sure players aren't able to easily call out noticeable problems, like one weapon reigning above all, or another one being very similar but weaker than its counterpart, making it truly redundant. Dual wielding honestly still has potential, but only with a lot of consideration and testing before it feels right given how much it actually shakes up the gameplay, both on its own and for the specific weapons it affects. The Needler going from comically bad to pretty good once it lost its dual wielding status is a prime example of how poorly the system can go and why many prefer to streamline over experiment. On the flipside, the SMG in Halo 3 is actually surprisingly good. It outguns the Assault Rifle pretty well and mulches at close range, and I believe it accomplished that because it was designed from the start for the dual wielding system and was given time to properly iterate after a fairly successful but slightly troubled first outing. This is the real core issue purists are trying to get at even if they don't realise it, they want the safety of a tight sandbox with everything given consideration and time to develop over a more varied, potentially underbaked assortment. Neither are assured outcomes based on the just the approach, but are fair bets. At the end of the day, I don't think any of us actually dislike more content, some just prefer quality over quantity, and those who don't aren't necessarily settling for trash, just less concerned with that kind of analysis.

As a developer, its easier to fall down the rabbit hole of balance than anything else mostly too because the more technical people are typically the most vocal. The average casual player mostly doesnt care to "break down game design", which means as a developer, most break downs seem skewed towards balance. I actually started making my game thinking of just fun for everyone and over time as I took feedback, I noticed the changes made it feel way more hardcore and sweaty and its hard to lean it back without upsetting someone. I do plan to implement dual wielding in my game repuls, hopefully I get to document the results (difficult to make games and content though) I think youre right, mainstream games most likely wont go for that mixed balance route anymore - so maybe some day an indie dev (hopefully me) takes it on.

My honest response to you is to save a copy your old balance of code before rewriting it. That way it isn't lost and the game can be shipped out with YOUR original intentions, and still have the sweaty hardcore code for people who care more about their own intended experience than the dev's. Call the code and balancing for you 'classic/og' and the other newer one 'hardcore' and have them selectable as buttons. Like a difficulty selection screen. That way you don't feel it's not your game anymore that you're making.

I feel like the desire for balance is a bit deeper than wanting all games to be esports ready. I think players have in general just shifted into the mindset that they'll use any gameplay strategy as long as it means getting them the win. Using your MW2 example, it's no secret that One Man Army/ noob tube was completely broken. In spite of this, the majority of players still didn't use it. Now fast forward to more recent times when the DMR launched in Warzone. It was completely overpowered and I believe it had something like a 60-70% usage rate. I think the idea of balance is also because players have grown more accustomed to abusing anything and everything to gain the upper hand, which creates an unhealthy meta when something like that is allowed to exist for too long.

I believe that the shotgun was replaced with the bulldog because the og shotgun is essentially a carbon copy of the sword. It is only unique in that it uses a magazine system

The OG shotgun is very similar to the sword in terms of power and range. You can't put the og shotgun on many maps, because it's so powerfull. The new Bulldog is more of a skill based weapon and has more counters. Therefore most multiplayer maps can feature the new Bulldog.

I'd love to have seen it back in Infinite with the caveat that it doesn't cause any weapon to be "nerfed". The only caveat I would add to appease "balance" be that reloading would be the main prohibitive factor, requiring a much longer animation. The objective would be to make dual wielding an emergency option to help in a 1v2, as if you've obtained a power up that enables dual wielding. There should be a disincentive to carrying it during regular play in favor of picking up a stray handgun to give yourself the edge in a losing battle situation, primarily providing a "movie cool" moment where you, the hero, claw yourself to victory. Secondarily, this allows for an individual without massive amounts of skill to win a 1v2 without NEEDING a power weapon, only needing to pick up a pistol or otherwise to help even out the fight. If this has a negative effect for high end play I simply do not care, they can just ban it. Dual wielding looks cool and feels cool and rule of cool IS my primary goal, games should first be fun and feel good before anything else, it's why Ultrakill is the 25th best reviewed game on steam ever while Competitive games barely even exist in the top 250.

I disagree about how balance was only a fleshed out concern after 2012. The pre-patch Model 1887s were absolutely infamous in MW2 for good reason, and even Halo had recognised imbalance with the Halo CE Magnum.

In regards to dual wielding, did they not have melee and grenades function with it in the H2 E3 demo? (The 'no smoke and mirrors' one) If I'm not misremembering, then it totally could've been done, sadly.

I think the best way to “fix” dual wielding is that your off hand weapon only has one mag or if it’s an energy weapon it has up to one over heat and can’t be cooled. Use up the ammo/energy and you drop the weapon. Not perfect but would work so you don’t have to nerf weapon damage.

The problem with dual wielding was that they balanced the sandbox around dual wielding. What they should have done is balance the dual wielding mechanic around the sandbox instead. For example, say the smg is fine on its own, so how do you make it so it’s not overpowered when you hold 2 of them without making the single smg weak? Well you could double the spread while it’s dual wielded so it effectively halves the damage unless you get closer to the target. Say you have the pistol, a precision weapon, you dual wield, and the higher spread and no scope makes that harder to utilize. Maybe the weapon’s fire rate is limited by a hefty recoil animation, like the mangler, you can slow down the fire rate while dual wielded with a longer recoil animation since it’s held in one hand Lots of options but the core idea is to make weapons have different behaviors when dual wielded that befit the weapon in question. In other words, the dual wielding mechanic being the cause of a weapon’s lower performance (balancing dw around sandbox) rather than the weapon’s performance naturally being made low because it can be dual wielded (balancing the sandbox around dw)

i feel like you can combine these two different videos you were going over and have ONE weapon or maybe two weapons that has the specialty of dual wielding, it's special BECAUSE its a dual wielded weapon. you dont have to find a copy but it'll always spawn as two weapons to pick up. I would like to see a dual wielded weapon in infinite and if its one weapon as a whole where you cant drop one then its fairly easy to balance.

Crazy idea thatd be asking alot, change the sandbox based on the matchmaking, considering how much people dont like the AR because of its reach and such how about having different versions of the AR from past game versions to go off of for gameplay like have social 4v4 use the Halo 3 AR since it is wildly weak start youll gave to look around or rely on holy triangle of gameplay but have a different AR between stages Behemoth is very different to Bazaar or Launch site in scale so maybe have the Infinite AR for more distance, now with a change for certain stages have Breaker with the Covenant carbine instead of conmando or have less UNSC weapons and brings more of the Covenant race weaponry(but the Spartan only simulation narrative screws with this and why even have anything else that isnt UNSC stages, its a miracle we have Banished and Forerunner stages) the reasons for thinned out weapon sandbox is nonsense and very much an excuse why we dont have weapons of old when there are narrative explanations why to add them but 343i isnt taking them as the same to playable elites and dual wielding, have modes made for them they dont need to be in SBMM add them for the community

A couple days ago i saw a decent suggestion from popq2(go check him out) video to bring back and balance dual wielding. Make it so that such weapon is ONLY dual wielded. So for example the dual SMGs are a power weapon and they are considered one weapon instead of two separate weapons. It sounds like it would fix the issue of damage balance. the "2 cookies VS. 2 halfs of cookie" as you put it. Just make them one weapon and don't limit your actions while using them.

About your dual wielding comments: many dual wield weapons had a base damage nerf compared to CE, however again an equivalent damage nerf is also common on single wield only weapons: compare the SMG and the Battle Rifle, which dealt less damage per second compared to both counterparts. Dual wield weapons take a damage penalty *when* they’re dual wielded, same for spread penalties, so when we single wield those weapons those are functioning precisely as Bungie intended. This is noticeable when many carry over weapons from 3 appear in Reach or 4 with similar stats, with I believe Halo 5 bringing the discussion up again with certain weapons experiencing dramatic buffs

It's wild how split this community can get like people like halo 5s story don't know how but they are out there some like 4s multiplayer which eh it's not halo but it's whatever for me I love every halo campaign except for halo 5 but halo 5 did have a solid multiplayer for a fps game for me tho nothing will ever top halo 2 it's my favorite campaign and favorite multiplayer out of every game ever honestly I put more time into it than every other halo and yes I love it more than halo 3 or reach lol I feel like everyone thinks I'm nuts but that just shows how good halo 2 was because that was before you unlocked things in games all you could do was change color and species and yet it was fun enough to keep people playing without any goal other than a rank games now I get bored if I run out of stuff to unlock halo 2 tho is just that fun it doesn't need anything else

Halo's "Redundant Weapons" need to come back, for fluff alone. The sandbox right now feels like Half-life or DOOM, where all the guns are unique, but it doesn't add anything. It takes away from it.

For dual wielding, my suggestion would be 100% damage when single, but either 1.5x or 2x when dual wielding since you're giving up grenades and should have maneuverabilities cut like no clambering etc. but should still allow melee.

This whole topic becomes a snake eating itself because in the same way you picked apart previous videos in this video you could do again and pick apart this video in the same way and point to the fallacy’s and flawed arguments within… objective arguments on a subjective topic are almost impossible to argue and you could go round and round in circles forever

Halo removing weapons from the sandbox is basically a tradition at this point, so I don’t really see the problem with infinite removing some.
