The original Halo trilogy seems to stand in contrast to modern Halo story; but from 2001 to 2007 even Halo's original titles were a little different.

In todays, we step back through the first three Halo games and analyze what made them different not just from the Reclaimer saga, but from each other as well. We will discuss the universe of Halo, the writing of it's characters and events and explore how Bungie created a successful sci-fi story without giving in too far to the tropes and cliches of popular sci-fi of the time. The first three Halo games weren't as similar as you might remember. Let's discuss What Made The Original Halo Stories Different.

It really is such a shame that they downgraded Truth, Miranda and Arbiter so much coming from Halo 2 to 3. Especially in the case of Arbiter because he's my favorite characters in the series, it was nice that he finally got closure and revenge in Halo 3 and sure he does have good lines both in cutscenes and in cinematic moments, he just feels like he spends most of the ride in the backseat but again at least the moments he gets are cool. Like that bit where he comes into the Flood hive and is blasting flood with the flamethrower, so cool..

Halo 2's writing is just so good. That game's character interactions alone makes Halo 3's entire story development look abysmal by comparison. But Halo 2 just had some good characters overall imo Off the top: Sgt. Johnson, Miranda, Cortana, Lord Hood, 343 Guilty Spark, 2401 Penitent Tangent, Truth, Mercy, Regret, Tartarus, Rtas, The Heretic, Gravemind--like bruh I haven't even mentioned Chief or Arbiter yet and you already have a solid cast constantly interacting with each other and the others around them. Staten got it right when he made Chief respectively take a backseat and wrote other characters to be somewhat important, too. Shafting the Arbiter as a playable character in Halo 3 killed off the Covenant side of the story completely, and - on top of half of the original cast being dead now + removing Cortana from the game as a whole for 90% of it + dumbing down every other character to be in service *only* to Chief - the quality shift is almost unbearable and i refuse to acknowledge Halo 3 outside of a gameplay standpoint lmfao. Halo 2 blows every other Halo out of the water.

Another element that I think added to the original trilogy was this sorta background-feeling of fun and adventure to it, mainly through a combination of certain songs like Rock Anthem for Saving the World, Unyielding/Reclaimer, H3 Warthog run, etc. and the more one-liner 'cool' bits of dialogue. The characters never directly pointed out that they're having fun in any blunt way, but the combination of those lines (especially Johnson's) and those songs I listed added this little undertone of "Yeah, all life in the galaxy is at stake and we're gonna handle the problem, but we're still gonna have some fun with it along the way." Almost like the characters IN the story were their own couch co-op party playing the game too, all done just through vibes in the dialogue and music. In stark contrast to that, H4/H5 felt to me like they were trying way harder to be more 'serious' and strip out the fun/adventure tones because this is a 'serious' story. I can give it a pass in H4 because the gallivanting adventure vibe doesn't really fit with the whole "Cortana''s slowly dying" part, but H5 just feels like it's missing part of Halo's appeal with no good reason to justify it, and Infinite has landed sorta in the middle; a mix of OG-trilogy fun adventure vibes and H4-type seriousness that has an actual point to it.
@Lord_TigerMan
@Lord_TigerMan 2 жыл бұрын
Halo Reach and Halo ODST (to an extent) took itself more serious. A lot of people still love Halo:Reach story and atmosphere to this day. Halo 4 to me still felt like “Halo” to me with a sense of scale and mystery, but remaining character focused on Chief and Cortana. While different from the Bungie games, I still enjoyed it very much and is one of my favorite campaigns in the series. Halo 5 was the only that lost that and I don’t even think I enjoyed Infinite’s campaign as much as 4 if I’m being honest.
@Brawl847
@Brawl847 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lord_TigerMan Yeah, I was just comparing trilogy to technical trilogy. Reach and ODST I'd absolutely say had a valid reason to drop the adventure-vibes because, like H4, they dropped it in order to actually *do* something that the adventure-vibes wouldn't fit with; the unavoidable slow-crawl towards death for the planet and Noble in Reach, and the crushing aimless loneliness in the Rookie-bits of ODST. H5 felt like it dropped the adventure just to fall in line with current-year generic Hollywood sci-fi; just conforming with norms and cliches instead of having *ANYTHING* interesting it was trying to do.

Love the video (like always), but I have to say that I'll never understand the dislike many people have towards Cortana in Halo 3. I've seen Ascend Hyperion and many other Halo content creators or community members express disliking how Cortana was a "damsel in destress" in Halo 3, but to me, that writing only servers to make her, Chief, and their relationship that much more interesting. Halo 3 continually showing how the Gravemind is trying to corrupt Cortana and using her as bait for Chief demonstrates the Gravemind's cunning (it is a practical descendant of the Primordial, after all), and also helps deepen the relationship between the two. Seeing Chief Doomguy his way through the wretched hive of High Charity to recover her, and then having the final mission with her in Chief's head helping him just like before, does a lot to show how connected the two are. It helps expand on Chief's emotional humanity that we don't overly see in the first two games, and also helps us understand the Gravemind and its intentions even better.

I feel the exact same way. It adds tension and it’s more relatable to reality. Not everyone is doing their best at all times and I think exposing Cortana’s vulnerability for being the most powerful ai humans had made at that point it adds so much depth and power to her character. I feel like people who shit on Cortana and graveminds dialogue in H3 are shallow as hell lol

It's interesting to note the change in how humanity is represented in og trilogy vs reclaimer saga. Personally, I enjoy the change because it makes sense lore wise. Even in the earliest halo books, humanity is immediately trying to crack much more advanced tech from the covenant, and later forerunners. I love how in H4 humanity has become the great power of the galaxy, really hammering home how humanity moved on without Chief. It was so interesting essentially having to play catch up. Same could be said for the Spirit of Fire in HW2. But maybe what's even more interesting is how this show of advancement is shallow. We can see in Spartan Ops and comics how humanity is playing with Forerunner tech it doesn't truly understand. Where the Covenant failed by lacking the capacity to innovate, humanity failed by doing too much, too fast without fully grasping the technology, relying on a mere handful of scientists and AI.

Excellent video. Favorite element of the writing: idk if this is the writing or more so the level design, but Halo 3 being mostly “continuous” in its approach to transitions between levels. 117 ends getting on a Pelican, opening scene of Crow’s Nest is Chief leaving the Pelican. Leave Crow’s Nest on Elevator, start Tsavo Highway from Elevator. There are no large “jumps” where travel happens and the player doesn’t get to see at least the beginning and end of it. Exception of The Covenant to Gravemind.

I like how the spartans and by extension the players felt like a part of a military rather than an independent avengers type thing. Osiris and blue team in Halo 5 feel more like superheros disconnected from humanity at large. Especially aesthetically; while the regular military folks all wear fatigues and consistent-looking armor, the Spartans looked more like power rangers. In Bungie's games, and in Infinite, the spartan armor is clearly unique among the rest of the military, but also clearly part of the same organization. I like how not everything is explained and how they would show you something mysterious and basically ignore it instead of have all the characters explain what it is. But on the flip side, I don't like how much they did that. I mean we never once hear the arbiters name spoken in bungies games.

My favorite element of the writing in the original trilogy was the tone and sense of fun. The world was a big sandbox, there was humorous marine banter, and it helped create a specific feeling when it was combined with a genocidal religious alien alliance, the horror the Flood, etc. I know this was an influence, but that "Starship Troopers" feeling (the movie at least). I also think this is where Infinite did a great job in the campaign to once again recreate that sense of "fun" that was lacking, especially in Halo 5 where everything was an exposition dump. Halo CE and Infinite were both simpler, straightforward, and gave you a playground, put toys in your hand, and encouraged you to go have fun.

If you were to go by today’s standards for “good writing”, Halo would have been subpar. It’s got so many tropes and inconsistencies. But I think this proves that a story that has tropes in it CAN still be amazing. It’s not whether or not a story has overused themes, it’s the EXECUTION of said themes. If you present it in an interesting and fresh way, the tropes do not diminish the impact of the narrative.

It's a series becoming generic in hindsight, because it started the trope/trend, or at least executed on it in a way not seen before. Halo was the first time a console shooter actually played well and intuitively (Goldeneye fans will know what I'm talking about), as well as had the scale it did. So many shooters tried (and failed) to copy it in the early-mid 2000s, and even its successors in the franchise aren't really able to emulate the aspects that really made it special.

The Brutes lost their identity and became glorified Elites and also their ranks are so hard to tell apart because they all are a bunch of BLUES! The Flood were not fun to fight especially the ones that swapped forms from tank to the one that sticks itself on a wall that made it so if there were at least 6 on the wall, it's the equivalent of having a firing squad on you. The Spartan Laser existing more than proves my point about how poorly balanced the weapon sandbox is and how more UNSC favored rather than Covenant Favored. The Brute Weapons are uninspired (aside from the spiker) and reskins of other weapons (while sometimes that's fine, it's just that there should be a gimmick that comes with it) THE SPECTER was replaced by an UGLY reskin of the glory it was in Halo 2 (since that's the only game it ever shows up in) that didn't add to anything. No fire damage that was like napalm, it didn't shoot saw blades Mad Max style. It barely looks like something the brutes would use. It's not Apocolyptic Biker Monkey enough. Hell if it were a vehicle that launched large explosives it'd have been cool. The visuals for the game look ugly too. Lord Hood and Miranda for example look like a potato that you'd post on the internet because you can't tell if it was healthy or not. They join up and board a Covenant ship, stealing it. They also recover Linda's cryo pod since she was critically injured from Fall of Reach, and got ejected from the Autumn into space when it went down. There's then a long trip back to Earth with various plotpoints that interweave somewhat with Fall of Reach.

upon my analysis between the bungie era of halo and 343's: halo 4's writing felt the most relatable (i haven't seen the campaign for infinite, so i'm going off of 4 and 5). Whereas some parts of 4 and most if not all of 5'd dialogue was to explain something and not do anything with yet, the bungie games with 4, there were a lot of times where the writing felt competent and confident. Nostalgia does play a HUGE role, but it's because there are lines i can recite from all of them: "I don't keep it loaded son, you'll have to find ammo as you go", "Your heresy will stay your feet and you'll be left behind", and my favorite "Shipmaster! they outnumber us 3 to 1. Then it is an even fight. All cruisers; fire at will, burn their mongrel hides!" the only 2 quotes worth mentioning in 4 is "The Forerunners have returned" and "Actually i'd like some intel with my intel" just off the top of my head. Overall the later games felt like they had to say something out the door before it closed, unlike before, they all had just enough time to have a conversation until they deemed necessary to leave it wear it lies. Does this all make sense to whomever reads this? character/story development aside, the overall wittyness/charm of what's being said in a casual experience in the first games, vs the more basic/ no nonsense hefty loads of text that take forever to get the point across. It's just a chore to listen to fireteam Osiris and Blue team talk about stuff that's either irrelevant or annoying, with Osiris being the more annoying side.

If you ask me, the Halo games are characterised by the fact everything about them is there to serve the gameplay experience, maximising the amount of fun you can have. It's no secret Bungie prioritised having fun over everything else, and it's clear to see how everything else connects to that core element to enhance it as much as possible. The relatability, the enthusiasm, the diversity of enemy, the sandbox, all of it helps you feel powerful and capable. It's a one-of-a-kind feeling and I haven't seen that since.

One of my favorite aspects of the old Bungie games was the dialogue, with H2 taking the spotlight. There were so many memorable quotes with so much meaning and can tell you a lot about the characters or the moment with so little and being simple. I cringe at most of the dialogue in 343 games because they are always trying so hard to be so emotional, saying so many vague things with no substance or that straight up sound ripped from a cheesy novel.

We can play each halo and feel a different way each time, but always has it been a good and sculpted feeling. We play each game whenever in a certain mood; the trilogy a full meal with all the flavors we like and it doesn't get stale yet.

What made the original trilogy so interesting is what they chose NOT to explain. Creating more questions than are answered is what made it so fun. The Forerunners became boring the moment they were retconned into being a separate species and we were given a whole history of them. The story of Halo is about exploration and learning what came before, almost from an archeological perspective. Think of Halo as being almost a sci fi Tomb Raider in that respect.

Call me biased but I think Halo 3 had the best story, mainly because unlike Halo 2 where the dialogue was so rich and made you connect with the characters, 3 relied on visual storytelling through the settings, the movement and the facial expressions of the characters. Example: I could tell Miranda and Johnson had a daughter/father relationship despite the fact they barely talk to one another. Halo 2 may have the best writing, but Halo 3’s visual storytelling is my jam.

14:30 my favorite élément of the writing is the humour sure it do contain sad time and tragédies like the arbither in Halo 2 or cortana in halo 3 the death... But i think chief was cheesy and funny many times and the games in général kinda like it was made for kids hope someone will get what i mean ( the marines ‚ the covnents ‚ the mood...) Unlike 343 games wich are way more dramatique and serious i THINK 343 tone down alot of what i said in their games while keeping some of this spirit especially in halo 5 ( fire team osiris ‚ and many other characters ) had humor like stuff or maybe because the writing was bad in halo 5 idk thats what i think is one of my favorite things in this franchise its so mémorable and joyfull ...

I liked the strong sense of hope and value of humanity in the original trilogy. Also: I think it's hard for us western people to write heroes we believe in, we constantly want to deconstruct or question motives or morality, and we find the idea of duty or honor difficult in the face of personal struggle (why should I uphold my duty when I myself are in pain or scared, or worse, why should I have a duty to protect humanity when humans have done bad things). Halo seemed to bypass all of that, it told a story of a courage and duty in the face of an obvious enemy, it did it with a smile on its face, it never stopped to say 'what if we're the monsters' like so many other sci-fi stories do.

My favorite part of the OT writing was that the characters just said badass things that made sense most of the time. In comparison to 343 Halo campaigns, it's quite the opposite. I find most of the character quotes and dialogue borderline cringe inducing, and upon the first playthroughs I don't understand the reason for their inclusion.

The reason why most people get upset at diversity in today’s entertainment is because it’s forced and the character(s) are not good. The original halo games had natural diversity and a lot of the characters were written very well. So people love them not because there’s a black guy there or a woman commander. They love them because they’re great and interesting. Writers today don’t understand this. That’s why you can look at female leads and black character leads from the 90s and earlier 2000s that are damn near completely loved. Fast forward to today and if you critique a female/black character for being poorly written or forced in to a story you’re a bigot or some other buzz word. So it’s not for unknown reasons it’s a “problem”to have a diverse cast. The problem is most of the people in charge of these IPs we grew up with know fuck all what they’re doing and are talentless. They care more about activism and pushing a message, than they care about telling a good story.

I think it's sort of reached a point where if there's any minority it's just blown off as diversity quotas. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely minorities because they have diversity quotas to fill, but some good ones are beginning to get written off because of the precedent set before.

@@alostbaron781 yea I can definitely see that happening. I try not to fall into that trap. Like when I watched The Expanse and I loved damned all the characters. I felt like the women were natural in their roles and grew. My two favorite are Camina and Amos. With that being said most of hollywood thinks that if they just have a diverse cast then it will be loved. We have to honestly criticize something and not fall pray to seeing everything as woke.

I haven't finished the Infinite campaign yet, but something I'm noticing that holds it down is a lack of urgency. Screwing around in the open world between missions kills the flow of the story and any feeling of tension. The fact that it's basically just the Chief on his own in the middle of nowhere doesn't help. You don't get moments like the Battle of Voi, where you're racing to take out the AA battery before Hood's fleet arrives, or H4's bomber run inside the Forerunner ship, where you try to take it out before it reaches earth, and then suddenly you're hearing desperate UNSC comm chatter and you realize you're out of time. Infinite doesn't deliver anything like that, unless it comes at the end of the game. I'll find out soon, I guess.

a big part of the writing for me has to be the pretentious one-liners that the cast somehow sells. "The cord. I am going to cut it." "One final effort is all that remains" "this is not your grave, but you are welcome in it." They're so cheesy, but somehow they just work.

The only major negative changes i really see are truth, miranda and cortana from 2 to 3, and arbiter being quiet. We also see spark say humanity is the forerunners in the original trilogy. And using a joke ending as an inconsistancy is a moot point. And technically spartans and officers in the unsc are cyborgs with the neural implant. The infinity should have been like an ark that was similar to the enteprise from startrek and the galactica from battlestar galactica, its on a mission of discovery but has enough people to repopulate the human race if needed and has the resources to do so, a mobile planet as it were. But instead its just a flag ship with size inconsistancy. The inconsistancies dont out weigh the consistancies in the original trilogy while the 343 era is heavily inconsistant with the original and each title in its own trilogy, if they were to redo 4 and 5 to be consistant with the original trilogy and infinite we'd have a good time but instead we have alot of idiots at 343 who have been destroying halo, our only hope is staten at this point but the ship is on fire and a change of captain may not be enough.

Your downgrade argument for Cortana sounds like white knight keyboard crap (to me). The damsel in distress approach during Halo 3 seems acceptable (to me) when you consider; she was left behind, had no physical vessel, was captured by and under constant attack from the grave mind - a sentience with the combined knowledge of many humans, surely the organic equivalent to a smart AI - and ultimately corrupted as expressed by Cortana herself when offered escape with the MC. Cortana had freedoms removed and vulnerabilities exploited. When your entire purpose is to win a war, being a POW in enemy territory while secretly holding the keys to the enemy's success might make you feel like a failure!

People see diversity as a political talking point in stories now because often times it’s very obvious that the characters being made are 100% tokens. Stories that don’t have tokens and still have a diverse cast such as halo, aren’t looked down upon, but when characters are obvious tokens it’s easy to see and it pissed people off.

The Halo community needs more sober commentary on what ACTUALLY happened with past Halo games. As someone who’s been playing since the very beginning, linking up old Xbox consoles with Ethernet cables to play multiplayer parties with friends on the very first halo (soo yes - I am old and an AUTHORITY) I feel the need to remind people that genuinely, the writing in CE was trash. The gameplay in 2 was horribly unbalanced. Halo 3… eh. No real huge flaws there, but this is all to say that Halo fans now are just sooo annoyingly critical. Like shut tf up bruh lol. Please… just enjoy the game. Be mad about what’s actually worth being mad about, and know when to curb your anger. The lack of content on Infinite is something worth being upset about at this point, but jeezus one month into the game, the uproar was hella premature.

I mean if CE writing is trash, then what does that make Halo 5 and Infinite? Halo 4 campaign definitely deviated but felt like a better way to conclude Halo rather than continuing the franchise. Halo infinite's campaign felt very empty despite being open world. Same sterile environment, limited enemy encounters that didn't revolve around main and side missions, and lacked any sense of high stakes. MC solo's the banish, solo's the harbinger, says goodbye to genocidal cortana, and completely backtracks by keeping her new clone around. People need to take away the nostalgic lens and see the campaign for what it really is...unfinished and uneventful.
@summitstreams
@summitstreams 2 жыл бұрын
@@samuelgiroux6819 maybe I should specify that I mean the dialog was trash. Like… incredibly bad. The plot was great. I mean, that’s what started it all. It couldn’t have been bad. The dialog though… terrible. And when I say the uproar was premature, I’m referring to the fact that this game was marketed as live service, meaning more content would be coming, but that content hasn’t come fast enough. We needed new maps months ago, and all we’ve gotten is literally two maps, which isn’t enough. For live service, I don’t think it started with too few maps/ content, but not enough has been released since launch. Soo, NOW, the leniency is undeserved, and the uproar is well deserved. I think they deserved more of a chance in the beginning though. Of course, I know this take will not get as many likes because the community has clearly shown that it thinks the uproar was just fine in the beginning, but hey… I really don’t give af. Lots of people have been wrong about other things before as well lol
