Thanks for sharing! My dad has grown many fruits from Vietnam including longan, dragonfruit (both white and pink inside), and a few others. We're in hardiness zone 10a and 10b. He hasn't attempted growing mangosteen, but hopefully we can give it another shot.

Its difficult to believe that this isn’t Florida! Good luck with the mangosteens I’ve seen pictures of some in callifornia growing up to three feet tall. I think it can be done

I’m not a huge fan of hurricanes; preferring earthquakes instead. Surprisingly, the Central Valley has its benefits when compared to areas such as Florida. For instance, the mangoes seldom get fugal issues due to our lack of humidity. Next goal...durian trees!

Tropical Central Valley wow. I’ve only heard of one ever growing here and it’s in a greenhouse. I bet you could probably keep the temperature stable if it’s in containers however the soil fertility is the main issue and ovcourse space. Maybe check out the soil contents in places of South Asia it grows well in.

The challenge with ultra sensitive tropicals really is the humidity. Soil pH is easily rectified. Rambutan and mangosteen for instance requires super high humidity and unlike lychee, they are not as forgiving and do not acclimate well. The Central Valley humidity during the summer season is next to none, hovering around 25%.

Tropical Central Valley what I’m trying to do for my rambutan and mangoes is build a greenhouse around them out of pvc and have a drip pipeline running through there on a timer to spray dechlorinated mist down every once in a while. Hopefully that will keep the area moist

How long does it take from seed to harvest..? I know almost nothing about mangosteen and just recently for the first time tasted it. The best fruit I’ve ever tasted and wanting to grow them now. 💕

It can take quite a bit of time, around 7-13 years.

I've tried to grow mangosteen seeds from fresh fruit several times with both of those methods; no luck. Hope you're luckier than me. They're a tough seed to grow.

That’s a bummer. Agreed, they are incredibly difficult to propagate, due to the super restrictive growing requirements.

Some people pronounced Hawaii as it is spelled, but the locals pronounced it as “Havai’i”. In the United States, fuel for automobiles are called “gas” while UK residences call it “petrol”.

Hello, I just watched your video about mangosteen growth from fresh seeds. There are 2 parts you said. 1th part you put in the fridge over night and 2nd part you plan right away. My question is which one is growth faster between those two.

So I’m actually not sure. As I tried both methods, I will be sure to make an updated video should they sprout.

@TropicalCentralValley

It’s likely the fruit was picked young, but from your batch of mangosteen fruits, you’re bound to get some seeds.

Hello friend. Great garden! I wonder if those mangosteen were irradiated?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 4 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure. Typically the label states that, however, theses ones bear no indication. From everything I read, although irradiated, the seeds can still germinate, however, fruit production is uncertain.

@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley Жыл бұрын
No luck thus far on my end when trying to germinate them. The main problem you’ll encounter when buying “fresh” mangosteen fruits in the fact that they go through various treatment processes when entering the country. This effectively makes the seeds sterile.

Specific to mangosteen fruits, there is an ethnic grocery store in Los Angeles called 99 Ranch Market that occasionally has them. Often times, the SF Supermarket in Fresno carries rare fruits such as rambutan, Taiwanese mangoes, Keo Savoy mangoes, longan, lychee, etc. Vallarta Supermarket sometimes carries them as well. Vallarta Supermarket is my go to for Mamey sapote. When possible, I do include the fruits grown from my yard.
