Yes sir you are right. Leupold says the reticule is not perpendicular to the turret cap. They do not lineup the reticule with the turret cap. With the receiver perfectly up-and-down I visually center the reticule. I have for 40 years. It works perfectly.

I have seen so many times one of my scopes have been setting in the safe for a year maybe two or three years get it out and go to make an adjustment and move half what it was supposed to or maybe double the distance I adjusted. This makes perfect sense to me and I can’t wait to try it I’m sure this will solve those problems.

From Cathy, the Real Gunsmith's Wife and also videographer: We have some in the shop on lathe and drill press. Doing so presents some issues in setup, as when we set up the shop 30 years ago we had no idea we'd be doing videos for publication 25 years down the road! ;) While the nice smaller space works well for him working it is not very conductive to filming. As I said, we have in the past and will probably do more in the future. Thanks for watching.

l like how he describes leveling the action and squaring the scope mount in front. However, we the commoners do not take the gun stock out so we can level the barrel and action properly. drawing the vertical line on wall is nice, I normally align vertical cross hairs with window or door frame line. But great know how demonstration.
@JourneyJackson1
@JourneyJackson1 10 ай бұрын
Most high quality rifles are machined so that the rings are properly in line with the action, but some are not. In addition, most high quality scopes can be leveled by removing the cap and placing a level on top of the bare turret, etc. I've done this many times with great success. To double check, you can hang plumb line from the ceiling and use it to align your scope reticle. Either way, Mr. Selby knows what he is talking about.

Thank you Randy. It has always been in the back of my mind that the turret is not truly parallel with the reticle, and yet I would still level off the turret. A level action with a level line on a wall is so simple. In trusting I was leveling the optic correctly, I would dismiss my sense that the reticle didn’t look quite right. I believe now this is the reason why while adjusting elevation, I might also need to adjust windage, or vise versa. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks again for the sharing of your wealth of knowledge and experience. I must confess I have been that dummy that placed a level on the elevation turret (lesson noted!). Before mounting a scope for use, I loosely mount the scope at max magnification and look through scope and slide forward and back to find the best distance forward or back for my eye relief. After that I level and secure hardware. I use a torque driver because I don't trust my hand as much as you (bad habit of over torquing). Anyway, this works for my eye but maybe not everyone's. Do you have a rule of thumb for setting eye relief on scopes for costumers not there to look the tube?

emm. You post many very interesting videos. I always learn something watching you. I am guessing 2 details you did not think worth mentioning are, 1 that is a machinist quality bubble level, and B the "level line" on the wall was also set up using a machinist quality level?? Do you ever use a dummy bar/ tube instead of the scope to align the scope rings? If the barrel was in a "bridgeport" you could also indicate the barrel/ dummy bar/tube to check parallel.AND which plane is the most critical to align? The reticle level? or the scope body/ barrel parallel? Thanks for putting up with me.

Interesting explanation on how to set your scope properly, however this contradicts my experience with making yardage adjustments with these scope for decades. A lot of Leupold's scopes have wind-age and elevation adjustments for drop compensation. I have never had to rotate them back and forth before going to the proper adjustment to have them accurately change POI. How do they consistently return to Zero if the springs need to be "re-leaved" before adjustment? Thanks in advance!
@allannantes8583
@allannantes8583 8 ай бұрын
I can verify that what he is saying about waking up the springs is correct. That is what makes him a professional. Swiss watch makers know the same thing as do torch wrench makers. Springs under tension should be untensioned when not in use or in the case of scope springs (turn up & down one rotation to wake them up) for lack of a better term. Most mechanics will understand this concept.

@joshuareed3999
@joshuareed3999 Жыл бұрын
Do you not recommend lapping rings to be totally in line? I have done this many times, and have always been able to remove some material (visibly) from the rings in order to relieve tension on the scope body. Even from rings touted as "precision rings machined from one piece of material". I'd there any real value added by doing this? Thanks.
@TheRealGunsmith
@TheRealGunsmith Жыл бұрын
I don't lap. I align the rings correctly which eliminates the need to lap. My load work up proves my techniques work by the groups I shoot, in the 2's and 5's. Furthermore, many companies, if not all, void any warranties if lapping is done. Thanks for watching.

And that is the problem when mounting a scope for someone who is not there. I’ve mounted many scopes for people but never without them there with me to get the ideal eye relief. I mount a rifle one way and there is a distinct possibility you will mount it different causing a slight difference in the sweet spot for the eye relief. But if he has some magical way I’m all ears, but I’m guessing he doesn’t.
@TheRealGunsmith
@TheRealGunsmith Жыл бұрын
Scopes of 4" eye relief dictate the scope be mounted 1" shorter than the length of pull, so, for instance, a 13 1/2" LOP equals 12 1/2" from heel of butt. Obviously it varies with eye relief. I mount scopes on rifles all of the time for clients, when I build rifles, and they aren't here. I follow this and so far, no issues. Thanks for watching.

@@TheRealGunsmith That doesn’t account for those who push their head further forward on the stock or those who are further back on the stock. I much prefer to set the scope to where the shooter naturally places their cheek. The sides of the ring base should be parallel with the bore. Using one leg of the square against the side of the base, turn the ring until the wrench flat and face of the ring are square with the base line. The turn-in rings for this style can also be rotated with a wrench. 1" scope rings may have 1/2" flats while the 30mm rings use a 5/8" wrench. Wrenches are handy if you don't have a dowel to turn the front base or with double dovetail sets which you turn in the rear base the same way.

Ok, I don’t question the fact you should turn the adjustment screws in one turn and then out one turn before final adjustment, but I didn’t hear an explanation as to exactly why this is beneficial. All I heard was that this purportedly pretensions the springs. That makes no sense whatsoever, as turning the adjustment screw in and back out would accomplish nothing in the way of spring tension. If this were true, then turning the screws in and out over the life of the scope would continue to tighten the springs repeatedly until the springs are ruined.
@TheRealGunsmith

@@TheRealGunsmith What I was getting at, the point I was trying to make, I’d that the term “waking up” a spring has no meaning at all in the context of what I can physically relate to. A spring, mounted in its intended place, possesses its manufactured specification on tension from the time it was mounted in the scope. I do not understand the meaning of “waking up” when it comes to a spring. Before any of this you take a new scope and a small cardboard box ( old shoebox) and notch a cradle in the sides of the box to hold the scope. Aim the scope at a target of your choice with the box on a table or steady surface. Now spin the scope. If the cross hairs are elliptical then dial the scope adjustments until the cross hairs spin in a perfect circle on one spot. Your spring is exercised AND your scope is mechanically zeroed so when you shoot you know just how out of alignment your bases or mounts are. I have seen many rifles with scope base holes off center. Rings off center. A few even so far off you run out of adjustments and need to shim or send back for exchange.

You can also just put the scope against a mirror and align the reticle with its shadow.

@@boredboiseboy exactly right. That is known as optically zeroed.
