my grandpa friended a pigeon when he was a kid. they bonded so closely that it would follow him almost everywhere. he never had it as a pet. it would just visit him 98% of the day. aside from being at school. it would follow his schoolbus even. it even brought its mate by to introduce it to him. he would just leave his bedroom window open, and itd be like "hello :3" theyre very affectionate creatures and very misunderstood, similar to corvids. i love all of them

I love homing pidgeons the most! I get migraines and can't deal with sharp noises, yet I want a pet bird in my future. Your video helped me pick the right bird! I could enjoy the soft coos and wing flapping just fine without being overstimulated. They also seem to be less destructive then rats lol. Yeah Pigeons are awesome when you have migraines. I got budgies, worst decision I made, well not quite, but urgh... But I also got Kakarikis, they are interesting too and don't make harsh noises most of the time. But then they're little ADHD toddlers on speed that ate too much candy so... Pigeons aren't my choice of birds because I love my toddlers, but I had one I took care of and found as a little chick, she was kinda savage slapping me. She loved doing that. But now she got a flock and only comes around to look after me and makes sure I'm fine. I miss her big time.

I've always appreciated pigeons. So many people refer to them as vermin, but I've always seen them as super cute. My partner and I bonded over how much personality the average pidge can have. Besides homing pigeons, I didn't realise people kept them as pets. Its one of my dreams to befriend a wild bird... Though I'd happily hatch one too.

Hey, Doogle Lawless! :D Oh same! I always loved pigeons since I was a kid, and I also thought they were wild birds.. but if you live in North America, all pigeons that you see in the streets are ferals - meaning that they were domestic birds at one point, but then either escapes\were let go and now survived in this climate... it's the same as if you would see a stray cats in the street -they used to be domestic, but something happened and now they are homeless.... kinda sad to know that actually..... any who, I also didn't know you can have pigeons as pets :D but turns out - it's not forbidden :D

The amount of sass in this video is absolutely amazing But mainly pigeons it seems like are one of the best pet birds you can have. Most birds are smart (sometimes too smart), needy, messy, poop a lot, and are expensive. Those are the basic things to accept when getting a pet bird in general. But of all those pet birds, a pigeon is quiet, physically cannot destroy things easily, and live a decent amount of time (not too long where they have to be given to grandchildren but not too short where it's too tragic). I've always loved pigeons and I want one someday, and this vid made me consider it more. Thanks for the info!

In the US, pigeons will go to some variety of an “exotic vet”, which is EXPENSIVE!! To find an exotic pet that isn’t prone to congenital diseases is AWESOME, even bunnies come with HUGE vet bills in their later years!
@spiritmatter1553
@spiritmatter1553 2 жыл бұрын
With rabbits you can expect to spend up to $700 US annually at your exotic vet to keep them well. Your regular dog and cat vet can’t care for them. Vets have to treat rabbits as not only adorably cute pets but also potential food items 🤮 so there are special regulations about what medications they’re allowed to have, for example.

@@DuBstep115 it's exotic because most pet vets only really treat dogs and cats. Exotic vets specialize in a variety - small mammal (rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs etc), reptiles, birds etc.. they're very different animals from dogs and cats so the specialization in veterinarian school is different. So exotic just means not cats and dogs

@@mylittlepigeon278 Free to fly outside. I had same idea. Once I bought my home this year the ex owner had a loft with 6 birds. I managed to add 14 more. I noticed that pigeons started to dwindle. I realized that I had projects for my pigeons other then falcons in the area. Falcons are very very destructive on any fancier flock. I fly my birds now in light rainy days. Since falcons and other flying predators don’t enjoy flying in this kind of weather. It’s been two months already without a single loss. Sometimes you learn hard way. This was my case. my kids & i have a house pigeon (he prefers "house falcon") named horus. he lives in our house & doesn't have a cage. we found him on the street after he fell from his nest as a baby & his parents were shunning him. we fed a particular flock on our street, daily, so we knew the various birds well. he's been with us for about four years -- i hope he lives to 15. we love him so much & he makes our lives very happy. pigeons have so much to give & they're such a joy to have around. we had another house pigeon before horus, our dear compass, that we allowed outside but he eventually met his demise after about six years. losing compass was heartbreaking, i think i'll always miss him. that's why we keep horus indoors & he's none the wiser. he's spoiled, bossy, loving, smart, & funny. pigeons are also loyal. they are fantastic pets!

the powder is just the disintegrated tips of their feathers. It's called bloom. Almost all birds do it. Pigeons are messy birds, they aren't really clean enough to keep in a house, unless you only have one or two and stay on top of the cleaning maintenance
@mylittlepigeon278
@mylittlepigeon278 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the new term.. I never saw it in any literature.. only dander. So learned something new today :) I agree, pigeons are messy.... same as parrots... same as finches... same as owls... And yes, I wouldn't recommend keeping a flock of pigeons in an apartment! :D hahha Same goes for cats, dogs.. or any other animal :D if you have one or two cats in an apartment - that's ok.. but if you have 20 cats in an apartment -that's no good. :D Having any animal you will have to clean more: cats leave fur everywhere, dogs must be washed after every walking outside, otherwise all your apartment will be covered with whatever your dog will bring on their paws from the street :D.... So I wouldn't alienate pigeons, and say they are not clean enough to keep in an apartment...any pet require cleaning maintenance :D This way pigeons are just as mush work as a parrot, or a cat, or a dog not more and not less :)

Awesome video! I rescue pigeons and ensure they are seen by a vet before sending them to a wildlife centre for release. Some vets will be wildlife friendly and will treat birds for free if they are rescues. Sometimes I will get charged, but it really depends on the vet. The pet pigeons I have are ones that will not survive in the wild due to their injuries. The only thing I would say is if your pet bird suddenly "looks" like it is not well (ruffled feathers, head down on it's chest, change in its' poop etc) is to get it to a vet ASAP. Don't be tempted to leave it for a day or two to see how it goes - pigeons can die very quickly if not treated.

Your pigeon looks so happy with you! I love her and your video was awesome. One thing you didn't mention that all bird owners should know is that all birds are sensitive to fumes and chemicals in the air, and even one use of a teflon nonstick pan can emit chemicals that are deadly. Candles, aerosols, cleaning chemicals, etc are also dangerous, and if anyone reading this has a bird, you need to look into this. You will need to do your research to purchase bird-safe cookware and stop using certain everyday items to keep your bird safe. I worked at a local parrot store for several years and my friend runs her own parrot rescue. The most common reasons people give up their birds are because they can't handle the biting or they can't handle the noise level. A pigeon would better suit these people if they truly want a friendly bird but can't tolerate those things. Pigeons have wonderful mild temperaments and are so underrated. But like you said they must be committed to spending quality bonding time with any feathered friend every single day. If it sounds like a chore, get fish or a snake instead. I'm a macaw owner and when people ask if I recommend them as pets, I say no. I love mine to pieces but he has been through a dozen homes for a reason, because macaws are a lot to handle and they aren't right for most people long term. If you do get a parrot, start small. I only recommend macaws and cockatoos to people with lots of parrot experience and tons of patience because they are more likely to be prepared for the challenge.

When I lived at home in my teenage years, I used to catch wild pigeons. I had two different cages. The last one was in the garden at the bottom of our hill. Once the pigeons were used to getting fed I let them fly out. They always returned. Where I live now wild pigeons nested under eaves and had lots of squabs. One time a crow killed a squab and the parent drove off the crow from the dead baby. Then a vulture was seen tearing it apart while another vulture landed to share, but the first vulture flew away with the squab (I uploaded a video to KZfaq of this dead squab event). Later the landlord spiked and meshed off all the eaves and roof supports, even trapping one pigeon. I called the landlord to release that poor pigeon that got stuck between the mesh and an eave board. Some pigeons came back looking for a nest spot. Now no more. I loved to watch the pigeons and videoed the pigeons mating, videoed feeding babies, videoed bathing in a bird bath, and videoed males fighting, and videoed the whole flock flying around together. Transient pigeons would visit briefly. Nobody else here loved those pigeons. Just a bunch of old squabbling seniors here.

It wasn't scared at all, so it must have been a pet. It was so smart that I had a whole photo session with it without it flying away, heck, it even posed a bit for me. Tilting it's head, spinning around, looking from side to side, stretching and holding a pose until I stopped snapping. Seriously, it never moved while I took the pictures even if I got closer to it or changed my position, always looking at the camera.

It looks like all that looking for pigeon videos for my floofy friend has paid off, because this was a very interesting video to stumble across! Luckily my pigeon pal doesn't do a lot of the cons (she's very clean, and not very fussy), but all that beautiful quiet disappears at the crack of dawn until after breakfast. Even though it's a little too late to convince me pigeons are great pets (they are), resources like this have been sorely lacking for non-parrot birds, and this video would be helpful in explaining to some of the doubters in my family why pigeons are not that strange as pets.

The pigeons that live on the roofs of the buildings around my house come and hang out with me every day. I think I would be lost without them, especially in the last 2 years. I hate to say this, but lately they have proven themselves to be better friends than most of the people I know.

Great video!!! Toby is so beautiful and the info u share is really helpful. Sadly I guess I do not have the conditions to have a pet pigeon right now but we have a feeder on my balcony and we receive visitors everyday such as Inca doves, house finches and sparrows. Just a few days ago we helped a baby pigeon as she had fell off her nest. Luckily her parents kept taking care of her and now she is ready to practice longer flights. I only have one question regarding having a pet pigeon, how do you deal with the bird's poop? It is great finding your KZfaq channel!!!!

Great advice and information. I have have doves and the care is very similar. My doves will only eat the very small, light-colored, round seeds. But I’ve heard from breeders around here that they don’t need a LOT of gravel. But they DO need it since they swallow the seeds while. (?) and if you only get one dove or pigeon, you need to spend as much time with it as you can. If you cannot dedicate the time and attention, then get two so they will always have a companion.

I love pigeons my whole life! For me they are one of the cutest and most adorable animals on the world! Also my beloved father who died 2,5 years ago loved pigeons so much! And also my mommy. She loves them and takes care of them if she find one that is hurt for example. To be honest, I have never thought about getting a pigeon as a pet, but now you are inspiring me, this is possible and I would so much love to share my life with one of these beautiful and lovely birds! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

I related to so much of this!! I have a rescued Birmingham Roller. She is a piece of WORK… but I love her! Finding the feed was the hardest. She HATES millet, which is 80% of most mixes. I ended up buying 3 different varieties of feed and mixing them together. Quite expensive, but I’ll never run out!

mine is a wild rock pigeon i found as a baby puff ball. He was almost dead when i found him. they actually do not need pigeon specific food. Ive been feeding mine chicken scratch for years now and he is very healthy. pigeons are very hardy and usually dont need much special care. they definitely do need a lot of attention though, it can sometimes be annoying but they are wonderful pets and i highly reccomend. as a side note, they are rather nippy and will bite often though its not because theyre aggressive but because thats how they play.

I literally work 8-4 come home and never go out even on weekends. I think a pigeon might actually be worth considering, they're not noisy or destructive and they'll wanna be around me, which is what I honestly want out of a pet. I'm needy too adorable pigeon! I just have to find out more info, save up a bit more money (for vet bills) and prepare before I find a breeder.
