I love that you can take Baldur's death scene when he says, "snow" in 2 ways or both: 1. He says it because he finally felt the comfort of snow for the first time in so long and as his last sensation 2. He realized his death caused Fimbulwinter, the beginning of Ragnarok

@@Celebrimbor965 Well, but fimbulwinter is in fact caused by baldur's death, it is cannon already... just saying, but I think it's an interesting idea that he said that because of Fimbulwinter. Kind of having a last realization that all he did and the path he choose led to him being tricked into fate, unlike Kratos

@@aubergineman5381 I'd say the boss fight with the Archdemon in Dragon Age origins, but Kratos fights a dragon with only one bit of help from his son (lowering the crane) near the top of the mountain the first time you head up. Of course I will argue Tirnoch in Kingdoms of Amalur and Adam Smasher in Cyberpunk 2077 were better. The later only because of every time Smasher killed one of my characters in the Cyberpunk TTRPG. The prior because you not only have to fight a dragon, but you have to fight all of the possible builds you could have gone with involving your character (2 or 3 at a time). Given you can pay a Fateweaver and try out all of the possible builds you can learn how annoying each of these builds are before that final encounter. Or you can learn the hard way (like I did).

I know it has been years, but I just realized something in this game specifically: Freya never refers to Baldur by name in the entire game; only by “my son”. She never acknowledges him as his own person. She could only see him as *her* possession. I think this layers the obsession, from both Freya and Baldur, to a much deeper level as a result.

As the norns had said before. Baldur will die a needless death. Freya couldn't let go of her son, Baldur couldn't let go his hate for revenge and of course, Kratos ability to kill gods. @@normiesaredegeneratesthatn3331 I'm 3 years late but, Baldur was like on drugs that point, after god knows how many years, he finally regained what he lost. And he felt WAY TOO MANY things at the same time, pain, cold, joy, thrill, and etc, while at the same time finally meeting his mother who took everything from him. His mind was way too chaotic at that point. No person would be able to walk away at that moment. There's also fear, fear that if he walks away now, he might lose the things he just regained. Imagine how scary it would be to lose something, wait untold years to finally regain it, then to just lose it again and live for more untold years enduring having nothing. So he's probably making most of the moment while it still last, if he dies then so be it and if he survives, he'll think about it later.

From what I can gather Freya claims she was protecting Baldur but it seems she was more focused in shielding herself from the possibility of having to deal with the sorrow and pain that comes with losing him. It didn't seem to occur to her that her son would be miserable and descend into madness because her primary motivation was protecting herself from the emotional suffering she would endure if she lost him. Even knowing the cure she wouldn't give it to him because his safety was about her first and him second.

In Norse Mythology Balder's death (at the hands of Loki) is a signifier of Ragnarok. It amazes me that this scene was able to make me switch how I felt for Baldur and Freya. I really pitied Baldur; he was on the receiving end of the ultimate coddling mother, who took everything from him, just to make herself feel better. And Freya was a selfish witch, who couldn’t let her son live his own life. Freya *knew* how to remove the curse she placed on Baldur, but she outright lied to him. She could see the torment Baldur was going through, but she put her own comfort ahead of her son’s needs. That is the *epitome* of a terrible parent.

No he wouldn't he did that once as shown in Helheim and he utterly hate himself for doing so. As he said he lived for hundred years tormented by his mother curse and as time goes on he goes mad and regretted not killing Freya back then when he could. Not to mention Freya stepped on landmine when she mentioned "feeling" to Baldur because as Baldur said he feels NOTHING. For Baldur this is the last straw since this prove that Freya never actually try to understand his plight. What I really love about Baldur character is that he actually looks like a confused guys who don't understand what he's supposed to do or feels. It is the beginning of ragnarok. In norse mythology, ragnarok is a catastrophic event where many norse gods die, including thor and odin. I don't think thor will kill kratos, more like Kratos will wipe the fuck out all of them but will die at the end. According to wikipedia, the gods who die are: Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdallr, and Loki. Loki as we know from now is Atreus. So we don't know if only kratos will die, or both (Kratos and atreus) will die

There's a few moments in here that I will remember for many, many years. The kick-ass father son god beat-ups on Baldr (especially the falling while arching thing) Atreus calling Jormungandr, Atreus gasping for air saying "not.... my.... blood...." to look up at Baldr with mistletoe sticking out of his fist, a dying bloodshot eyed Baldr proclaiming the word 'snow' with his final breath, marking the beginning of Ragnarok, Walking up the steps of Jotenheim, seeing their travels on the walls and the realization of Faye's true nature, Releasing Faye's ashes off the cliff with a backdrop of dead giants as far as the eye can see, Kratos telling Atreus he was meant to be named Loki, Kratos and Atreus meeting Thor, etc. I believe these will all go down as monumental moments in gaming history. Well done, gentlemen, well done.

I could be wrong about the timeline of events, but I assume freya "gifted" balder more or less after being banished to midgard. Which basically would have been after she had lost everything, her family, her home in vanaheim, her position as queen of the Valkyries and queen of the nine realms, and after having married to a abusive husband to end a war. and I'm assuming she doesn't get much a chance to talk with any other potential kids of hers. So balder at that point really would have been all she had left. Which makes this all the more sad and tragic.

Mae W she says to Kratos she was thinking of doing this since he was a baby so I guess she and Odin did this together to him before they split up. Sytion Ragnarok here works like a self fulfilling prophecy. Everyone tries to avoid it and yet it always comes no matter what choices you make. Kind of like going back in time to kill baby Hitler only to find out that the baby you killed was switched by mistake in the hospital so WWII happens anyway. Then you go back in time again to do it the right way but this time you kill the baby so the family adopts a new child and this new is Hitler. No matter what the characters here do their choices WILL cause Ragnarok. Hope I explained it well :p

PKassotis Art in real norse mythology, his gift/curse was done by Freya in response to Odin learning of a prophecy in which Balder dies. "The cycle ends here"....ironically, the death of Baldur marks the beginning of Ragnarok, which is the end of a cycle and the start of a new one...It is said that at the end of Ragnarok, only 2 humans will survive in a cave, the Earth will be born anew and those 2 humans will rebuild Earth, starting a new cycle. Of all the gods that have fallen, Baldur, Hoor (his blind brother that accidentally killed him with a mistletoe spear forged by Loki), Magni and Modi will return from Hel and will recount past events. And so, a new cycle shall be born. So yes, Kratos did end the current cycle.

This "snow" means that Fimbulvetr is here. and that everything will perish. Freya had to suffer years of anger and resentment from her own son, and she never received forgiveness for what she did to Baldur. Baldur had finally got his wish to be free of the curse that Freya thrust upon him, and his anger cost him his life because he wanted his mother dead. Just finished this. Can't begin to say how much I loved it. One of the few games I've just powered through right to the end, no KZfaq, no guides on the trickier parts, no nothing. And while I assumed there was more to Faye right from the start (I figured she'd be a god rather than a giant), I initially thought Baldur was Loki. Brilliantly played twist. Hiding in plain sight. Only thing I felt could have been done better (only because the rest of the writing and handling of twists was so expertly done) was Freya freaking out over the mistletoe arrows. Gave it away if you know the lore of Baldur. But a minor criticism in my vote for game of the year (and I just spent all weekend glued to RDR2). So many great twists in the end: Faye being a giant, Atreus being Loki, Baldur's neck.

After a year i come back to see this. Not for the excitement of the battle. But to actually mourn Baldur, this deserve a rewatching. Baldur was a victim of what can only be called the effect of mythology on people. Sony Santa Mónica achieved a masterpiece in many ways, Baldurs character is one i actually feel empathy towards because of what Freya did and the result of those actions in this game.

Vito's Vids yea his speech at 2:48 makes me feel bad for him, especially the part where he says “To make you understand EXACTLY what you stole from me”.

I just realized Baldur is a suicidal man stuck in an unkillable body. Seeking any possible way too hurt or kill himself. Its not until Atreus cures him and he is finally happy does he die. He is such a tragic character, more a Victim than a Villan

Just realized the speech baldur gives freya before the fight is almost identical to the speech freya gives odin in ragnarok

So it reveals that Baldur is not pure evil for pulling out a fight that lasted the entire game, but he lost a lifetime because of his mother, so that means, Baldur is actually broken evil…

I find it funny that when I played this scene, I would assume Freya could revive Baldur. But that literally gets answered my Mimir when you travel to Freya’s house after the main quest ends
