The relationship between Latter-day Saints and Catholics in Salt Lake City is a fascinating ride into interfaith history. While the early Latter-day Saints faced intense persecution from their neighbors, the same was happening to early Catholic immigrants in the latter-half of the 19th century.
While making a visit to Utah, I explored the Temple Square area. After hitching a ride, a few blocks down the road stood the Cathedral of the Madeleine -  the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. The cathedral had caught my eye from online pictures I had seen earlier, with the blend of architectural styles mixed with a vibrant Spanish Gothic look inside.
As a curious lifetime Protestant who visits all these different types of churches, the THREE questions that POPPED into my mind was with how much LDS has shaped the vast majority of history and development of the state
*How does the Catholic Church operate as the minority in Salt Lake City, under the shadow of the Latter-day Saint worldwide headquarters?
*How is this cathedral just blocks away from Temple Square?
*How does the interfaith relationship dynamic work between Catholics and Latter-day Saints?
I got the chance in to walk-in, look around, and witness a Vespers evening service. Afterwards, I dug into the history of how this happened. To my surprise, it was Brigham Young who played a key role in helping establish the first Catholic Church in Utah, which now is home to the Cathedral.
This hasn't been without some eyebrow-raising. One bishop ordered the interior murals to contain Bible passages that seemingly feel directed at key LDS doctrine (most notably Galatians 1:8). The most curious example of LDS-Catholic relations was a letter found in 1923 that said a poker night had been held between an LDS prophet, the Catholic bishop, and a prominent Protestant reverend - though many dispute this actually happened. Tensions grew in the 1950's-60's, however leaders from both churches extended olive branches at key moments.

I have a hard time imagining this poker game actually taking place. If there were no alcohol, no money, no cigarettes, just a friendly game of cards then I guess it's conceivable but it's still a stretch of the imagination. I do know that as soon as anything like this gets out then it takes on a life of its own and is widely accepted as fact without checking the actual facts. It was often repeated but I know of no other source to corroborate this account. McConkie did say some things which were later discounted, particularly in regards to race and the Catholic Church. He publicly acknowledged that he was wrong on certain points and even had to rewrite a book which he had authored explaining the doctrine of the church. He was wrong on many points and the book was recalled and reissued with the corrections made. Because of that book the First Presidency then mandated that all books written by General Authorities purporting to teach the gospel be submitted first to the First Presidency for review before being published.

I was an Evangelical Protestant when I moved to Utah 18 years ago (Dec. 2005) and I converted to the Catholic Church soon after. From my experience, the Catholic and LDS churches have a very good relationship here. I think it helps that the leadership structure of the two churches is very similar and both churches place a strong emphasis on family. There are major theological differences (so much so that neither church accepts baptism in the other church as valid), but Catholics and Latter-Day Saints seem to get along fine. I have attended Catholic Masses for over 16 years here and have never heard negative comments about the LDS Church from a Catholic leader.

Latter-Day Saints have so very much in common with many in the protestant world, whether they appreciate it or not, but then they have so many other things in common with the the Catholic Church. Those who feel it necessary to attack others often attack the Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint using the same arguments.

I grew up Catholic and was baptized at age 8 along with my siblings. I have a deep love for the Catholic faith because it shaped who I am. I did convert to the LDS faith in my early 20s (over 20 years ago!) and moved to about 12 years ago Utah. There are many commonalities between the two faiths. One that I appreciate is the teaching of their gospel and doctrine, with out disparaging other faiths. Not to say members of either faith don’t say negative things about others, they do, but as a church it is not a practice I’ve witnessed during church services or classes, etc. I was extremely disappointed attending some Protestant churches who disparaged other Christian’s at the pulpit or during Sunday school instruction. We’re all God’s children and that alone binds us together. 😁

We are LDS but my three younger siblings attended a catholic school. We have an appreciation for mass and all of the good work catholics do. When my sister had a injury and was out of school for a few weeks my mom went to pick up her homework from her class so she could do it at home. She was in tears when the classmates said a prayer for my sister to be healed and that she could get better and return to class. It was so beautiful seeing prayer in the classroom. You don’t see that in public schools. These children genuinely praying for those in their class is something we’ve never forgotten. ♥️

Brigham Young also donated land for the Greek Orthodox Church and the Jewish Synagogue. There is a great Greek festival every year in Salt Lake and one of my L.D.S. friends bought and paid for restoration of a very early Torah for the Jewish community. Parts were sent to Israel to be written on white doe skin by authorized scribes to fill in missing pieces.

What a beautiful Catholic Church. I’m LDS but had the opportunity to go to Catholic Mass with my cousins a few times growing up. My husband and I went to a Latin-speaking Catholic Mass early in our marriage. Oh how I love people of various Faiths. There’s so much we can all learn from one another. Including those who choose not to participate in organized religion. I’m convinced if we all took the opportunity to really get to know each other we’d find out we have more in common than we realize.

I've always felt that the LDS church's very unique doctrine of baptism for the dead (or more broadly, the concept of having a second chance of hearing and accepting the gospel in the next life) affords them the luxury, if you will, of being more friendly and open to other faiths and ideas. Although Latter-day Saints are zealous missionaries, they don't necessarily have the "now or never" attitude. They're not too worried about "if you don't convert to our religion (or conversely, if you leave our religion), you will go to hell" type of attitude that can turn someone more cautious or even hostile against differing ideas and opinions. The prevailing sentiment among the LDS concerning other faiths is that "we are all brothers and sisters, we would love to share our beliefs but it's okay if you're not into it, they may come around(?) in the next life but if they don't, that's also okay. We love seeing sincere expressions of faith and love everywhere regardless of creed or sect."

Believe I read a comment from an early video that said there's two churches. One is the "Mormon Church" that is a stereotype, and then the other is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From what I've encountered, everything that I've found with LDS is far from the painted stereotype. The number of messages from Latter-day Saints has also been overwhelmingly humbling, makes one want to learn more.

I then listed some of the things you mentioned about other churches in your videos. After you learn about Thomas Kane, read the book his wife (Elizabeth Wood Kane) wrote -- Twelve Mormon Homes: Visited in Succession on a Journey Through Utah to Arizona (1874) - where she documents her journey from Salt Lake to St George (with her husband) a trip that came as a special invitation from Brigham Young. The cultural observations she records about the early pioneer life in Utah (from the perspective of a progressive non-LDS woman) are fascinating.

David glad you got a chance to go to the cathedral. It's a beautiful one and rare to have that type of architectural style in Utah. It would be interesting to know more about the background of the guy who wrote the letter. Some may not realize it, but there used to be some rowdy "gangs" even back then in UT. It's possible he was writing in code. Since he was talking about gambling maybe the various church leaders mentioned in his letter referred to different denominations of money he owed the guy he was writing to... It could have even been that guy's money he was using. Of course this is speculation without ever reading this letter. 😂 😊

I consider myself somewhat of a study of American History, and I had never heard of the Bible Riots before. Thank you for talking about it, I’ll have to look into it more. Awful to hear about

This is very interesting. Growing up Catholic in the Bible Belt (southeastern part of the US), we Catholics are a minority around 12% among Evangelical and Pentecostal Protestants. Mormons in the area are less than 2%. Nonetheless, we were always taught that the LDS Church was not Christian, but was a false cult founded by a false prophet. I learned that in Catholic school and almost all my Protestant friends were taught the same thing in their churches and schools. So it's quite interesting seeing this.

Another unique connection between Latter-day Saints (Utah) and Catholics is that in 1776 the Spanish Catholic explorer named Father Escalante was considered the first white man who discovered the Salt Lake Valley. He came up through the red rocks of southern Utah, of which a town is now named after him, then went through what is known as Price and through, what is now now as, Spanish Fork Canyon, named after the Spanish explorers who were commissioned by the Catholic Church.

I believe the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints made a sizable donation towards the renovations of the cathedral of the Madeline in the 90s. There might even be a plaque in the foyer expressing gratitude.

21:40 it wasn’t calling catholics of the devil. Rather it was speaking of the corrupt leaders as being the whore of Babylon. And I do think that is true. Those who have true faith and didn’t practice corruption in the Catholic Church are a part of the Church of the Lamb of God for exercising true faith in Christ is part of the covenant path. To talk the full path, one must be baptized by the proper priesthood authority and endure to the end of all the laws and ordinances on that path.

We Latter-day Saints refer to Galations 1:8 to show the need for God to call a Joseph Smith to restore the SAME, original gospel after the errors and truths lost over the centuries.

David it seems to me that you just want a caring community to belong to, but do not think about - at all - what theology underlies it all. My question as a Christian to the LDS would be that they believed that the church - all of it preceding it was an “abomination”, void of any value and Joseph Smith alone restored it - which he alone was told this. Was our Lord not speaking truth when he said “I will be with you always” and the “gates of hell will not prevail against it (His Church). Well according to Joseph, the Lord was not with us until 1830 or so and hell did prevail - until Joseph had the First Vision. Didn’t St. Francis and all of the other saints mean anything? How did Christ get to him? From nothing but “abomination”? I just cannot believe that. They are very nice. But that’s it.

The problem here is your premise. You are accusing Joseph of believing something Joseph never claimed to believe. You are projecting. In 1 Nephi there is extensive talk of two churches. It is a very poor and flat interpretation to believe that means The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints vs everything else (silly and childish). One is the Church of the Lamb, which is light, kindness, joy, goodness, humility; one is the church of the devil which is pride, control, manipulation, power, pleasure. Since Christ, there have always been humble, kind, loving, penitent followers of Christ - Church of the Lamb and there have always been beasts of the earth, often wearing frocks, ready to put them to death - church of the devil.

Latter-day Saints believe that most other faiths have part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, including non-Christian faiths. We also believe that we have the fulness of the Gospel. We believe that Joseph Smith was called of God "by the revelation of Jesus Christ." (Galatians 1:12) We don't preach against other faiths at Church (or elsewhere) because contention is not pleasing to Jesus Christ, and it's a waste of precious worship time. Misrepresenting our beliefs back to us doesn't convey any devotion to Jesus Christ on your part.

@@boba.6478 … well among many other objections, I believe that the Nicene Creed is the correct basis for Christians, as it is for the overwhelming near totality of the Lord’s Church and I cannot and do not believe that God - the Father - was once a man, like you and I and progressed to be the Heavenly Father, and that you and I are in a progression to be as completely as He is. He alone is the Lord. “As Man Now Is, God Once Was; As Now God Is, Man May Be” - President Lorenzo Snow. I would not worship a being that was once a man. cf. Colossians 1:16-20.

@@slikdudelb That's fine. I have no problem with that. It does not, however, address the fallacy in your original comment to which I was replying. I have no problem, at all, with your faith and your beliefs. They are yours, and that is important. I would only hope that you would not use the inaccurate phrase "sola scriptura" all the while deriving your theology from the creeds, philosophers (termed "church fathers"), reformists, or any other non scriptura source, like the "near totality" of Protestant Christians. I do encourage you in your faith in Christ, to read and study the Bible, and to try to best of your ability to follow Christ and emulate Him. I would only ask that if you need to the quote Latter-day Saint prophet that your quote be accurate. It is bad enough to attack people who are not against you, but don't make it up. Your first comment - made up. Your second comment - legitimate. Go forward in love and faith and do what Christ would do. Please don't do what the "near totality" of Christians did for fifteen hundred years - attack, torture, and burn people for having a different understanding of scriptura.

From a Catholic perspective, Protestants reject the essential elements of their faith. Does that mean the gates of hell prevailed against the Catholic Church? This is the point you are making about the LDS Church. We don’t reject the good. We don’t accept the Pope as our infallible leader, the way Catholics, though. If the Protestant view is to reject the Pope in favor of the priesthood of all believers, we don’t whole heartedly sustain that. What does this mean? Christ gave Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth, resulting in the unity of the faith. The Protestants could see the Catholic Church needed correction, but the Protestant result was some 46,000 un-unified churches. The world should see the faith as being unified, but they are not. If they were, the Pope, or some Protestant leader would be the key-holder, and could re-key all buildings in Christianity. That’s a physical representation of the spiritual divide. How should we view the scripture about the gates of hell? Gates do not attack anyone. The Apostles died. The gates of death prevailed over their bodies. In the absence of Apostles and prophets, the Catholics claimed all was handed over to the Bishops and the Popes. The Protestants claimed that all was handed over to the individual. Jesus descended in death, and threw open the gates of hell to those who had succumbed to the gates of death. The Apostles did not loose the authority given to them by Christ. They had the authority to seal on earth and seal in heaven, or to loose on earth and loose in heaven. Though they did die, the gates of hell did not prevail, but what about the living oracles on earth? Where were the Apostles and prophets? Martin Luther demands that there were 66 books of the Bible which was greater than prophets and Apostles. All you need is the Protestant Bible and you will have what Christ gave in the Apostles and Prophets, and unity and nirvana and St Francis and everything is everywhere present. Just don’t look at the man behind the curtain, because unity does not really present itself. Christianity brought a change to the world. We no longer crucify. People who are abused do have rights. The world has become Christianized even those who don’t believe, have Christian behavior. We have governments that use Christian ideas about discerning the truth. The accused is innocent until proven guilty, even if the judge is an Atheist. We don’t condemn others as believing in a different Christ. We accept your devotion. We pray for all men. We welcome their prayers for us. We believe we are all children of God. Not all Christians can say that. The New Testament shows how Paul’s followers had rejected the faith. Peter ran into the same problem. The New Testament Church had dozens of divisions. The Apostles first replenished the vacancy of Judas in the Apostleship. The Roman Church no longer had the very thing which Christ gave to keep the church unified on earth, Apostles and prophets, but the prophecies showed that all would be restored in the last days. That is what the Restoration is all about. Apostles and prophets have been given the keys of the kingdom from those who held them last. Peter James and John restored the Apostleship in modern times. The promises concerning Elijah have been restored. The unity of the faith has been one of many good fruits of the gospel. Of 17,000,000 members, when the senior Apostle, who holds the keys on the earth, to seal on earth or loose on earth and it would be sealed or loosed in heaven, there is unity. In a physical sense, that Apostle, the prophet and President of the Church can order the re-keying of every building, and it would be done, in a way that cannot be done in the mainstream churches. If the mainstream church is more unified than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, then the opposite would be the case. Who is the key holder of the Baptist churches? The Presbyterians?, The Lutherans? The mainstream Christian Church? If you cannot be united in a physical sense, how can you expect to be united in a spiritual sense? What is the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Write it down. Then ask your neighbor. Ask a Lutheran. Ask a Catholic. Ask if the mainstream Christian church is unified about the Doctrine of Christ or the Gospel of Christ. Look at the Gospel of Christ in 2 Nephi Chapter 31. Look at the Gospel of Christ beginning in 3 Nephi Chapter 11. You will see the Gospel of Christ is plain and simple. It is found in my nearest LDS church congregation and it is the same in the nearest LDS church congregation where you live. I wish mainstream Christianity were unified. Maybe one day they will be. As for now, it looks like Apostles and prophets were what was needed instead of the Protestant 66 books of the Bible. Modern day revelation is important. If you gave your heart to your fiancé, and wrote it all down, and said no more to her, she would wonder why you don’t love her anymore. God loves us, and as ever he did. His prophets and Apostles wrote his words to them. God continues to speak to us as before, although that is heresy to the Sola-Scriptura crowd. The idea that sola-scriptura should be concocted without Apostles and Prophets ought to be a heresy. The idea that the Trinitarian Doctrine would be formulated in the third and fourth centuries without Apostles and prophets ought to be a heresy. The of idea baptizing babies ought to be a sign that something has gone terribly wrong. The idea that early Protestant leaders were as keen to martyr those who believed differently than they, as the Catholics have done over millennia, ought to be a sign that something isn’t quite right with the mainstream. The idea that this wonderful country of ours has subjected the American Indians to animal status ought to be a sign. The idea the blacks in America were not fully human in the constitution ought to be a problem. The idea that slavery was a long held right of the mainstream in the South ought to be a sign. The idea that the mother country of Protestantism and the Lutheran Church would attempt to wipe the Jewish peoples from the earth ought to be a sign. This was all given to Joseph Smith. The December 25th 1832 prophecy on war was as clear about the 1860’s American Civil War beginning with the rebellion in South Carolina is as clear as Jesus Christ’s prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem of AD 70. The treatment of the Jews came out in 1830 with the publication of the Book of Mormon about 100 years before the Holocaust. This is what God revealed when speaking of the Gentiles rejecting the Book of Mormon because the Gentiles would have the Bible. What thanks do the Gentiles give the Jews for their Bible? In other words, if the Bible was all and all of God’s words, how did it allow the Gentiles who hold to the Bible, to go so wrong as genocide against the Jews? Your basic premise, that the Christian Church stands because Jesus said the gates of hell shall not prevail against it, doesn’t mean the mainstream Christian church wouldn’t fall from her noble birthright. The Roman Empire was part of the king’s dream interpreted by Daniel. The kingdoms of the giant statue with toes of iron and miry clay is like the splintered kingdoms of the mainstream churches. Napoleon put an end to the supposedly Holy Roman Empire. Not long thereafter, the stone cut out of the mountain without the hands of the mainstream church would begin to roll forth. It was only six members in April of 1830. It is rolling forth in every nation, kindred and people. It is no longer of one nation and race of people. The main thing to notice, is it is united. Just as Christ said, when he gave Apostles, Prophets, Pastors teachers, and evangelists. This is not the miracle of 66 books of the Bible. It is the miracle of a marvelous work and a wonder, of prophecy and revelation, and the priesthood power of God to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, to the gathering of Israel, and of bringing protection and peace of Christ to the world which desperately needs it.
