I wonder how many people got to see this beautiful engine on this day. Almost forty years ago.

this footage was also used by TM Books and Video. Berkshire Videography seemed to have licensed their content to them because this is where the majority of their real steam locomotive footage comes from.

The project is starting to show signs of life again. Stall 4 in the ARMM roundhouse is currently occupied by her tender and a Norfolk Southern flat car bearing the boiler (until new waist sheet bolts are fabricated). Anyone who claims she needs an entire new boiler is talking out of their ass--the smokebox is new, the barrel is good (all reading are well over 0.900" of the original 1.000"). Only the roof sheet needs re-assesed and replaced (and a matching crownsheet) for 205 MAWP. Last week (10/15/2015) the crew was starting to finalize the ashpan and grate assembly. They're currently working with whatever's on hand, moving parts with nothing more than a pallet jack...they're working to change the board's attitude while making a little progress. In the mean time, while the museum itself remains silent, the best source for info is facebook.com/fansofprr1361. Just leave the negativity at the door.

You might think that, but its pure insurance policies for 1361. Ive heard from FRA or speculations at least, that there were only 2 solutions, replace the firebox sheets and reduce the boiler pressure, or operate at full pressure with a brand new boiler firebox and smoke box. That’s what i remember hearing from Altoona

@HaloCE14 I'm with ya! I take #3751 for granted that it hasn't been taken out of operation like some of the eastern steamers. I hope #1361 steams again in the future for all the great folks of Pennsylvania!

Why does it have a conrail car on its consist

New boiler, firebox, etc whatever. Boiled down to rank amatuers with huge egos playing with trains who wasted many thousands of dollars. 1361 is in the hands of professionals now who know what they are doing.

If they can get #1361 back in operation, it would be neat to see her on the Cape May NJ line as k4s were seen on that line during the fifties!

1361 never pulled any Norfolk Southern excursions. You need to do some research before you speak of such things.

Our R.R. owns a narrowguage 0-4-0 in need of a new boiler, to replace it will cost us roughly $80,000. Imagine how much it will cost for a standard guage locomotive with a boiler the size of a semi trailer (or maybe bigger).

If they don't restore 1361 to operation, they'll probably have to deal with a railfan riot. Hopefully, what I read in the Altoona Mirror is true, that Salone has a new plan.

Did you know that the RDC budd car behind 1361 was damaged severely after this run. When Budd designed the RDC, they never untended them to be pulled in a normal train as was this case in 1987.

thats the downside to american steam... they're massive and exelent in performance, but when its time to overhaul the thing, its too big
@roccotoothycombs11 жыл бұрын
dude they wasted millions of taxpayer's money in the form of state grants on this thing. To beg for another 3 to 4 million just for a new boiler alone would go over as fast as a lead balloon. It is never going to run again. You have to know where the parts are in the first place. Then as soon as stuff breaks like it did the last time it'll be a statue again.
@roccotoothycombs11 жыл бұрын
Salone and his buddies ran restaurants out of business what makes you think they can rebuild a locomotive? They have concerts and use none of the profits towards restoration. It is never going to happen. The boiler is at East Broad Top RR in the car shops. Why? Because the Altoona RR museum has not the money to pay the EBT for storage fees it owes. So it sits there collecting bills doing nothing. Joke joke joke. Just like Altoona.
